It's ok but falls in the Danny Phantom trap of comedy people trying to pivot to action

I give it a solid 7/10.

It was alright but it was too silly for adults and not edgy enough for the kids. I think the intro sequence kind of summarizes the disconnect that was going on. It's a parody of the animal action genre but the intro is very playful, bouncy and "safe" sounding which makes it feel too much like a segment from Animaniacs, which works great for that show's format but Road Rovers needed something more rock n' roll.

To sum up, it's a great example of how a cartoon can have a solid foundation but be brought down by being a little too tongue-in-cheek. iirc the last episode is also the way it is because the writers knew they probably weren't getting a second season barring some kind of miracle.

So like Fish Police.

It had a groomer character.

I feel like there must be a pinpointable moment where these Animaniacs derived shows flew too close to the sun and crashed and burned forever. This show isn't "bad", but it's just a punch of puns and weirdness. It's like a B-side of Animaniacs that was made into a 22 minute show. I think they got a little too full of themselves making bizarre stuff like this, hence why these kinda disappeared by 2000.

Pokemon killed Animaniacs-type shows

When Kids WB was made. They just kept doubling down and alienating the audiences. Pokemon usurping them was a foregone conclusion.

For Road Rovers and Histeria, it was because they were not only expensive productions, but also by the late 90s, they were much better cartoons out there. Tiny Toons and Animaniacs were early 90s so their competion wasn't as strong (Tiny Toons had to compete with Talespin and Tom & Jerry Kids). But with Road Rovers, why watch that when you could tune in to Dexter's Laboratory or Hey Arnold? Even kids at the time knew Ruegger practically made the same show 6 times.

I just couldn't get a read on this show when I was a kid. I didn't know whether to get emotionally invested or turn my brain off. I knew it was a silly super team show but it just didn't gel with me like Freakazoid or The Tick.

Sort of, but Fish Police was supposed to be for adults and looked too much like a kids' cartoon which just made everyone uncomfortable. Road Rovers could have been a successful IP for kids since it had toyetic looking character designs and easily understood character archetypes, but was a bit hamstrung by the lack of a "cool" factory. If it had dialed back the tongue in cheek just a little and leaned in a little more on the action, I think it would have hit its target. Like a funnier version of Swat Kats rather than feeling like an Animaniacs bit that was extended into a full show.

For me, they were both in the same weekday afternoon block on Fox.

Remember seeing that episode the day it came out...and it took me by surprise by what they said!
Then next time it aired that part was removed.
For years I thought that scene was a fevered dream.

IIRC, they unironically had the show cancelled because of that single song. I'm not sure how true that was (I doubt it had good ratings) but I was pissed when I found out. It was a legitimately good show. The villain had depth, even if they did the reveal on his origin a little too quickly. Having said that, I imagine they weren't thinking they were going to get greenlit for more than three seasons tops, so I guess in hindsight it makes sense.

These

I was a kid at the time and Road Rovers looked too kiddie for me. Didn’t help I was going through my MORTAL KOMBAT and Batman TAS phase.

I don't doubt that song hurt its chances of renewal, but from what I can tell Road Rovers was a barely a blip on the radar already. Ruegger cartoons were already declining in popularity and the next two (Pinky Elmyra and The Brain and Histeria) killed these types of self referencial, pop culture heavy series for good
