>>150554608>>150554865I feel like the key to Ren & Stimpys success wasn’t just the insanity, surreal writing, and classic cartoon influence and artistic freedom which was unique at the time, but also the fact that Ren & Stimpy are pretty marketable characters in general. The duo of an insane dog and a stupid cat are malleable enough to be used in a variety of stories. Tons of 90’s kids who bought toys of them could use their imagination and imagine them in tea parties, fighting with their action figures, and maybe they’d even draw their own stories with the characters. They were the perfect duo for a cartoon like this.

Even the artists who got to draw good storyboards on other shows had to adjust to them actually being used instead of being thrown away down the production line.
