People get tired of the same old crap. One way to keep them interested is by subverting their expectations. This can be done by creating new things or inverting old things. Such as Good vs Evil but Evil was good and Good was evil. "The bully was the real victim" or "the bad guy was pragmatic and trying to save the world actually, and he was misunderstood" or "the angels are actually evil" or "the happy, colourful world is actually a dystopia".
Every talentless cunt goes for an inversion, because they can't actually create something interesting of their own. Btw, two interesting things about inversion.

1) Inversion is useful when you're trying to change public perception. You destigmatize something bad or you smear something good. And we know that nerd media have been used to change perception on certain matters for years now.

2) Eschatological religions such as Islam use inversion to describe the End Times. "Good will be called bad", "Men will be lying with men instead of women" etc. The idea is that things will have gone so wrong, they have gone the other way around and that warrants the supreme deity to take action.
