Having this reveal at the end of a 9 episode series that lasts about 300 minutes, with everything we witness the characters go through and change from, would be a spit in the face. The audience spending all this time and effort only to learn that the real people are still miserable losers and that Sim characters are a few steps away from a new game reset wouldn't be very satisfactory. You'd have a better reaction with killing them all a sacrifice to destroy the game and stop it from getting anyone else, in a tribute to ihnmaims and it's bittersweet ending.

All this talk about digital clones and bullshit about mind transferring makes me feel the need to remind folks that once "the SOMA theory" ends up being canon then all discussion and interest in the show will drop immediately because it will effectively make any further theorizing impossible. No one is gonna give a shit about all this character development and life fulfilling because what the fuck does it even matter, these digital copies were never even humans in the first place. when the whole show's premise was literally "these six HUMANS trapped in a digital game". The cast being digital clones all along makes them lose everything relatable to them because not only are they just fake since their creation, whatever humanity they are trying to reclaim means nothing. For characters who were always explicitly AI it might be something to learn humanity but to fake humans who always thought they were real it just becomes a devastating realizationat least Tron/digimon science magic gives a way for the characters to still remain human or able to return to a human reality even if canon claims otherwise

My personal pet theory is that the circus has limited memory, so the cast are all constantly losing bits of their past within the circus and having the same conversations over and over. The reason they're explaining their backstories to one another in episode 5 isn't because they've never talked about it before, but because they have, and have just forgotten about it.
