Do you think a cartoon or comic about a girl who used to go on fun childhood adventures but is now going through a midlife crisis as she thinks they were just passing childhood fantasies and nothing more could work?

Already bern done but not with a woMan protag.

If I were to guess, Hedgehog from Summer Camp Island is haunted by the nostalgia she feels for her childhood friendships/romance and either she's alone and wistfully reminiscing on it or she's on a date and even adult romance doesn't bring her the same level of joy she had back then.

I'm already imagining a show about a washed up magical girl, who used to fight aliens with her Sentai team. But something happened and she hung up her wand years ago. Now she's spinning her wheels in life at an entry level job or getting money from gig economy jobs, too socially damaged to go on dates, slightly overweight and due to a recent event feeling nostalgic for the days when she used to fight for the freedom of earth.
So something actually happens perhaps she witnesses an alien attack and fights it off, meeting either a protege or a love interest. Maybe both if we want some loli yuri action. Or maybe a soldier who's supposed to fight the aliens or a government agent if we want a man to be the protege love interest. who is grateful for being saved and in turn realizes who they just met and tries to get the former magical girl back on her feet, fighting aliens, which is really the only thing that ever gave her life meaning.
Maybe a sub-plot about her trying to reconnect with her fellow retired magical girls who are all dealing with the fallout from whatever made them quit in different ways. Traumatic event could be something like, ( Death of one of their Sentai team/friend who was helping them with their magical girl activities, horrible injury that put the main character in the hospital for years, child protective services removing them all from their parents when the government discovered their superhero shenanigans a major defeat that made the reality of their magical girl activities sink in, getting defeated and raped by the aliens. Or maybe a combination of these things, possibly some happening to a or some of the girls and not others.)

I remember Benji Nate did a comic in Silver Sprocket about this, though it was more about one who's way past retirement. One difference though is she's not particularly nostalgic about her experience but more sober on it. Her life still sucks in the present though.

You can really tell a woman wrote this from the moment she complains about men being around and showing interest in her.

It is Benji Nate, so it's to be expected. Girl Juice is pretty similar, though I do actually like that comic.

I hope I'm just not finding it and future chapters exist. I did some searching and it seems like she gave more effort to other ideas at the time (Hell Phone, Girl Juice, Cat Boy). Still, I hope she'll revisit it if that's the case.

As a fan of Magical Girls and the various works of Ishinomori (who I will admit, put his characters through the wringer, especially the original KRs goddamn), I'm struggling to think of a Kamen Rider that was killed by getting hit by a Truck, such as Minky Momo.
Or one who was groomed and then statutorily raped by his headmaster, such as Utena.
Or was witness to an Air Raid by his Evil Organization against the School, and subsequently witnessed his best friend get burnt alive, such as Cutey Honey.

only if there are moments of elements from those childhood adventures leaking through into her midlife crisis, proposing two ideas to the viewer, one being that; trying to cling to your childhood adventures can lead to misery in your adulthood, or, juxtaposed; allowing the joy you felt from your childhood to influence your perspective in adulthood can help you overcome its difficulties as well as help the next generation have their own adventures unburdened by the cruelty that awaits them
tl;dr main character finds joy and helps some token still naive kid character go on their very own childhood adventures

OK, hear me out.
Retired magical girl who's living a normal life now and thinks it was all in her imagination. The magical world sends one of her old friends to get her since the magical world is in deep trouble after being without her help for a few decades. She gets dragged into adventure again, remembers how much fun it was(as well as enjoying being back in a kid's body again), then goes back to the real world only to find she missed some important events at home while she was out having an adventure. Now she's being pulled in two directions, trying to protect and save her old childhood friends from evil, and trying to live her adult life maintaining her job and current relationships. But every time she chooses, the one she doesn't choose suffers.
When she chooses to stay at home so she can be there for her mother's birthday, she comes back to the magical world to find the forces of evil managed to burn an entire village to the ground in her absence. When she chooses to help her old friends stop some world-threatening scheme, she comes back home to the real world to find her father got rushed to the hospital, and her entire family is wondering why she wasn't answering her phone. Trying to straddle both lives doesn't go well, her family and friends in the real world think she has stopped caring about them and no longer wants anything to do with them, and her old friends in the magical world think she no longer cares about them and isn't willing to continue helping them fight against evil.
Eventually she ends up having to decide which life matters more to her, and say goodbye to the other life. Neither side is a really happy ending. She can either give up on all her childhood friends and let them suffer whatever fate may come, or abandon her family. In the end, she decides to break the veil and tells her childhood friends about her current family, and her family about the magical world she goes to(with proof of course).

Young girl becomes a magical girl however she's all alone except for her magical assistant who isn't very helpful in learning her abilities. The new magical girl figures out a nearby woman used to be a former magical girl and seeks her help. When you turn 18 you stop being a magical girl and you get a slight mindwipe where you think of all the fighting and adventures as your imagination or "silly kid stuff." The new magical girl telling the former one directly helps unlock her memories so she becomes a coach for her. Aside from fighting evil they'll also have to help form a new magical girl team. The reason the new magical girl is all alone is because the standards for recruitment are so high that no girls else in the modern day qualify (everyone's a jerk). So the two of them have to teach local girls how to be upstanding citizens until they can be good enough to become magical girls.

One antagonist could be a villain/villainess who was completely mindwiped by the former magical girl but when her memories came back so did the villain's.

If she has no kids of her own - or her kids are already grown up and can fend on their own, then magical world.
BUT if her kids are still growing up, then she better be a good mother and be with her kids in the real world - or take her kids.
>>
>>150605562
She's trying to have kids, and if she goes to the magical world where she's always a kid then she never will be able to have her own. That's why she breaks the veil. Her childhood friends understand she has a schedule she has to work around in the other world, and that they may need to hold the line until she can come to their rescue. And her real world family and relationships understand she will regularly need to disappear for a little while to save another world, and that she will be back as soon as she can.

I really do hate the notion that gritty = realistic. Your Superhero comic isn't anymore accurate to real life just because people have guns, thousands of people die and everyone swears. Just because your magic system is cruel and unusual doesn't mean it's any more realistic than that something from children's book, because magic isn't real.
No amount of "tone" or "mood" makes something fundamentally not realistic more realistic because joy is no less real that suffering.

Kamen Rider Rogue is implied to have been prison raped in a prequel extra episode before being freed by Evolt.

My theory is that the reason Americans always do "what if magical girls got BURNT OUT and DEPRESSED" is because these western works are actually made by people who liked magical girl anime (usually Sailor Moon) growing up, but have since been infected with feminist brainworms, so they feel compelled to subvert the genre. Because actual Magical Girls are some of the most outrageously traditionally feminine protagonists out there, even as they kick butt and endure pain through virtue as much as the best chivalric heroes of old. This is incompatible with the feminist idea of the traditional woman, which is, essentially, a slave to be replaced at the time of her male masters' choosing. To embrace femininity is to forge your own manacles.

So these subverted western writers depict magical girls as burnt out, traumatized, and discarded. In their poisoned minds it's simply the logical end result of these characters having bought into the "lie" of traditional femininity. I can only pity them.

Eh this was ok I guess but it still annoys me that so many westerners make these kind of stories without having actually watched/read a lot of mahou sjojo stories. There are examples of interesting magical girls stories in every decade starting from the 60s yet this fags only watched maybe 1 or 2. It's so annoying to think you can dissect a genre that you barely even know especially when your ideas have already been explored years ago.
>>
Just read Magical Girl Spec-Ops Asuka. It comes at the idea from the other angle: the Magical Girls are proxy warriors for Cold War-esque factions from the magical fairies universe, and the MC is a retired Magical Girl called back into service for One More Mission.

So, instead of a Mid Life Crisis Former Child Actor plot, it's the Retired Cynical Action Hero plot.
>>
>>150594874
I fucking hate cynicism, I hate how every fantasy show has to have some millennial whiny bullshit, "UHH I HAD TO WORK AT STARBUCKS AND I WANTED TO BE AN AETIST OR WHATEVER THE FUCK, OH LOOK SEE THIS FANTASY WORLD, BOOM! ITS ACTAULLY ACTUALLY ALL CYNICAL!" Reminds me of that 'I don't want to be magical girl' dogshit you motherfuckers eat up becaue it's just some nihilistic bullshit, every magical girl show is a subversion now to the point I'm convinced that half the people that write these shoes are either fetishist pedo fucks that get their dick hard at a bib or nihilistic millennial venting about their shit at life and putting this dogshit out in the public. Just a bunch of doomer stuff, fuck you!

To be fair, Garo is like an actual show for adults and airs in the appropriate timeslot. So it's not weird when there's some fucked up shit in there.

It's weirder when you have stuff like a kids merch show where the seconday hero avenges the death of his robot rival/friend by killing his evil father who put his mind in a belt with the robot's weapon. Also the weapon and belt are plastic toys.

It's that surreal mix of serious, dramatic storytelling and ridiculous kid aesthetics that makes these sorts of things.

imagine getting isekai and the world begins to collapse due to your absense in reality leaving a sort of void that slowly consumes the world into non-existence.
we never see the other side of isekai, someone suddenly leaves and instead of the world just going forwards it instead is unable to move, their insignificant life happen to be fundamental in existence and them fucking off into another reality brings the world into unbalance and chaos as the impossible happened thus making life important.

Except that america hasn't made that many normal magical girl shows to begin with, especially some with the writing/directing on par with the best of mahou shojo anime.
>Japan is also full of magical girl shows that are either gritty and grimdark or have the girl depressed and disillusioned.
Exactly . Those people that try to make a "realistic" magical girl don't realize that the genre has always had magical girls that dealt with gritty and grimdark scenarios for decades and as much as they advertise their takes as "revolutionary" they don't really bring anything new and the writing of their projects is most of the time even worse than what you could find in a normal magical girl anime/manga. I don't agree with that anon either, it's not about feminism but rather about inexperience

Even the most popular works like Sailor Moon had them fucking die full of regrets and sadness like a regular shonen anime would, that shit wasn't always happy
The truth is that the "Magical girl, but girlfailure!" crowd just never saw those shows at all

> Do you think a cartoon or comic about a girl who used to go on fun childhood adventures but is now going through a midlife crisis as she thinks they were just passing childhood fantasies and nothing more could work?

Not really. A comic maybe. But not a cartoon.

I want to see adventures happening NOW. I don't like flashback episodes and I especially don't like spoof episodes. If the entire series were about a woman telling stories that she did in the past, then I'd quickly get bored of it.

Pic related. Harmony Flute. I don't want to watch episodes about Harmony reminiscing on her life with bears and her past married to Marvin Flute. I want to see episodes right now of her journalism career, raising Stan as a single mother, and dealing with Marvin.

Oh, wow, so relatable!
No.
I would like a "Big Boss" type character type of character to round up all the stray magical girls and unite to solve the problems of the young instead of wallowing in depression (but sometimes do touch on depression, have the magical girl version of the "Why are we still here? Just to suffer?" speech)

“……or trying to kill us.”
Wow, it’s almost as if being a hero means fighting villains. What the fuck do they think is gonna happen? “You’re a pretty girl, so I just give up.”

I think The Boys was gonna explore Japanese superheroes. I don’t think they ever did. Would be interesting to see the take on Jojo, Dragon Ball, Sailor Moon, and Naruto.
>>
>>150626627
No it wouldn't. More cynical mean spirited garbage making fun of magic & alien heroes would suck.
>>
>>150626662
I enjoyed The Boys because I didn’t take it too seriously. I can understand how people would get pissed off if the Sailor Moon stand in was a coke head.

I would like to read more webcomics about increasingly depressed women, especially ones who feel like the joy in their lives can't seem to match the ones from their memories.

That one is more of a littlr girl that had a bad first impression of a fantasy land going on a downwards spiral for ~30 years before returning home and hating the real world so much she does desire returning from time to time.

you're missing the key note of the text.
It's not that someone is trying to kill her but that the people trying to kill her are men.

No. Nobody wants to watch that except for childless middle-age women.

Watch an anime if you want to watch a sincere magical girl story there are literally thousands of them. God forbid a couple in America doesn't want to do what's already been done and put their spin on it.

Examples of good magical girl series? Sure: Cosmic Baton Girl, Minky Momo, Princess Tutu, Rayearth(yeah it counts), CardCaptor Sakura, Ojamajo Doremi, Corrector Yui, Yume no crayo, Saint Tail, Nanoha+Nanoha A, probably some kind of of Precure but I haven't watched enough of them to know which one is the best but I really enjoyed Smile Precure.
