just getting back into comics recently after many years, read Watchmen, Batman Year One and Kingdom Come in the last month. Looking for any recommendations or even just talk about your favourite comic/runs and sell me or others on it

I'm working through a bunch of old superhero comics because I've reached a point where I'm questioning if I even like the genre or just comics that are good despite the genre. Most of my favorites fall on the outskirts of the genre (Watchmen, TDKR, Mage, Foolkiller, etc).
I recently reread The Winter Men and Marshal Law, which fall under that "post-superhero" subgenre, and liked them well enough.
I also read Peter Milligan's Enigma and didn't like it as much.

Good choices OP, I have read the same ones in the last couple months as dc compact comics and I also read new frontier and all star superman in dc compact. Last few weeks I bought Batman year one off Amazon then I bought these and I highly recommend these after Batman year one. Read the man who laughs the read long Halloween the read dark victory. And at some point read dark knight returns by frank miller. It’s an elseworlds story though doesn’t take place in the 1986-2011 Batman chronology we’re reading. Enjoy!
>>
I've been getting into all-ages hidden gems this year and past but I'm looking to expand to more mature titles

The Punisher MAX and Fury MAX: My War Gone By are not only some of the best grounded comics from the Big Two, they've got tremendous impact and are amazing looks at geopolitics and the military industrial complex.

Read Superman Red Son. The only good take on dictator Superman I've seen personally. He is still Superman in every sense of the word, he is doing what he thinks is right and makes big mistakes but he is never willing to cross his deepest moral lines or be a full tyrant... but perhaps he has already become one without realizing...

Only 3 issues too! (though very long ones but still)

Also where'd you get that Year One scan? it's amzing

Too bad Skottie can't tell a compelling story with that comic.

Yeah, Skottie's run is carried hard by his artwork and Jean-Francois Beaulieu's colors. (And to be fair there are emotional moments in that original run that I think are emotionally effective)
>>
Challengers of the Unknown by Loeb and Sale. Severely underrated and overshadowed by their later work, but possibly the best of them all.

Fury and Fury Peacemaker are both really really good but if you don't care for Fury 2001 somehow I still really recommend reading the rest of the Ennis MAX stuff. If you like that stuff, read his Marvel Knights Punisher run too. His Vertigo Unknown Soldier mini was also really really good and served as sort of a dry run for stuff he'd revisit in My War Gone By
>>
>>150607944
I've heard nothing but good things about Rogue Trooper, Judge Dredd, Strontium Dog, Lone Sloane, and The Incal. If you want something less European and more pulpy there's always Dreadstar.
>>
>>150610207
>Dreadstar.
really have been meaning to pick that up
>>
>>150608677
I keep forgetting about it.
For some reason, it never really attracted my attention, but I'll read a few albums.
>>150610207
I've read Lone Sloane and The Incal. More visual spectacle than anything.
I'm currently reading Judge Dredd and it's been okay so far. Haven't hit the 80s yet.
Dreadstar is definitely on my list.

I HIGHLY recommend JLA: Year One. It was the best post-Crisis on Infinite Earths depiction of how that version of the Justice League (Black Canary, Hal Jordan, Barry Allen, Aquaman, and Martian Manhunter) formed as a team and grew to trust one another.

I have a bias because that was the series I grew up with and familiarized as the founding JLA, but I wish this had been adapted into the movies instead. Or at least they should've made this an animated movie like they did with Batman: Year One and other stories.

Also read Legends of the Dark Knight. It's an anthology of self-contained (for the most part though there are a few issues that tie to the greater Batman continuity like the Knightquest ones with Sondra and her brother). They're usually about the early years of Batman's career and explore villains and concepts that rarely get touched in the Batman or Detective Comics titles.
>>
>>150628965
>I HIGHLY recommend JLA: Year One.
It's turdtastic.
>>
>>150629094
Are you one of those Trinity fans? Like I said, this was my exposure to what the Justice League was like as a kid because I read those issues when it originally printed in the late 90's.

Not everything has to have Superman, Batman, or Wonder Woman. It's why I love the Arrowverse. Their trinity was Green Arrow, Flash, and Supergirl; and holy shit it worked.

Also I recommend Batman: Son of the Demon. If you want the REAL son of Batman and Talia and how they actually hooked up, read this story. I miss the days when Talia was one of Batman's true love interests and the whole larger-than-life scope involving Ra's.
>>

I don't care about the DC universe and I don't like mediocre comics.
