Then there's the Peter Tomasi run featuring Superboy, and by extension Super Sons if you want to get into that. And honestly the recent/current Williamson run is worth checking out. Suppose you could check out the Bryne run of Superman too.

For as much as people harp on the 90s, Superman during that time was really consistently solid. Even with the whole hype machine of Death. I recently read the Busiek stuff too and liked it, the City of Tomorrow stuff was good and the Exile era was fun space stuff.

Not that I don't think it's good, it's one of my favorites, but I feel like you get more out of it when you know the character and mythos more but more importantly I don't think stories like this will actually help you get into the character. Ditto for Red Son. These stories, while good, will kind of lead you right back to where you started once you read them. They don't really get you rolling on the mainline titles. And if that's all you want then yeah, I'd strongly suggest them but if you're looking to get into the series more deeply they're not really gonna help you with that. Thankfully DC has been on fire with it's collected editions in the past few years so looking at some of those will give you a good idea of what to read. They're also finally filling the gap between the Byrne trades and Exile next year. I'm also not gonna tell people to run out and buy big expensive books blindly but well you know how stuff works, I ain't you dad.
