In fact it's less dark™ than most deaths in kid's cartoons because given the evidence there's a good chance there's a Heaven in this setting. The only thing that makes it worse was the fact that she just learned how to love herself for the first time and her future was so bright. But that's not scary or disturbing to kids, it just makes her death more impactful.
