>>150641941I have a feeling that letting go of showing Kitty's backstory and dropping her redemption arc is the thing that pained the fimmmakers the most since they put a lot of development into them, but it was making the movie too much about Kitty with the amount of time they had to tell the story. If they had just kept her backstory without the redemption arc it would have made the audience too sad because you had this cute kid who Diane led down a dark path and then couldn't pull back, and if they left her redemption arc in then the finale would have ended up bloated because you have to have Diane forgiving Kitty and confessing her love to Wolf all while they're trying to escape an exploding space station.I wish the movie was a half hour longer but studios generally don't have a lot of faith in longer animated movies.

During some playful banter Kitty asked Diane what she'd steal if she could steal anything, and Diane said all the gold in the world. Then Diane had her change of heart and decided she couldn't be a criminal anymore, and when Kitty found out Diane was returned all the treasures she'd stolen, she felt betrayed and wouldn't hear Diane out when she said she wanted them to go good, so she ran away. Diane went to college, and Kitty ended up in prison. In one draft, somewhere between Kitty feeling abandoned by Diane and ending up in jail, she tried to join the Bad Guys but they laughed her out of the room and ended up hiring Webs instead.In these earlier drafts Kitty was also going to reconcile with Diane after seeing the destruction that her greed was causing, both to herself and to the earth. This all would have endeared Kitty to the audience a lot more but it also didn't leave enough time for the rest of the movie, and it also meant retreading some of the first movie's plot. Plus Kitty being rejected by the Bad Guys was a bit too much like Syndrome's backstory in The Incredibles.

Disney has had a real hard time making memorable villains who are actually bad, if they have a villain at all. They also have a problem with believable romance and if they even have a kiss scene it's always quick, dry and forgettable.Looking through the earlier and unused content it's also nice to see that the romance between Diane and Wolfie was a major component of the film right from the getgo. The final version of it actually comes across as a lot more sincere than some of the earlier drafts where they undercut a lot of their romantic interactions with something comedic and I'm glad they dialed that back.

Which is hilarious because if you think back to Disney's prior classics 90% had a love story as a main component of the story. It's a universally relatable theme that when done well wins you a lot of investment from the audience. It's like Disney's competitors are remembering all the most important lessons that Disney used to be the masters of but forgot and abandoned over the last 10 years.
