What do portrayals of Peter Parker always get wrong about his character?
>>150646535The top two and Spectacular to a certain extent were fairly accurate
Eye color
>>150646535Which of these is most like the Ditko version?
>>150646535Most adaptations by trying to cram Ur-Spiderman into a single moment in his life miss out on the drastic development he has had.Teenage Peter was an angsty teen with a chip of his shoulder that used the Spider-Man persona to be assertive and let of steam while dealing with crooks. He honestly needed the guilt of Uncle Ben weighing down on him to keep him on the heroic path in those early years as otherwise he would just be another teenage shithead with powers. Then he goes to College and has an Ayn Rand phase where he is still kind of a standoffish prick but, begins to mellow out and closes out his time in education as a smart generally heroic if quick to anger guy. This is important because the "Menace" part of the character was because he was kinda an asshole and his bad reputation among other capes is because he would get mad and say smarmy shit before thinking, even if he regretted it later. Then life continued, he dated around, got married and while issues abounded he fully grew into a confident, well balanced guy with his anger mostly subsiding. Then he made the deal with Mephisto and was changed into a constantly fumbling awkward guy who is constantly stressed and yet due to being a former kid hero has the skills to be a good mentor figure. So if anything is gotten wrong its that for the majority of his youth Peter was a quick tempered often solipsistic guy, who's snark came from a place of resentful mocking as much as it was anything else. And that he didn't start mellowing out proper till halfway through college.
>>150646535like >>150647704 argued, Peter is a multifaceted character who can be both the sweet dorky nerd to the egocentric prick, most adaptations either focus on Peter as the kid, or Peter as the adult
>>150646535A lot of it stems from the refusal to move beyond one point in Peter's life>His personality is always completely stagnant>He has all his friends in High School>He never becomes friends with Flash>His reputation as a menace never feels earned because he's never the mysterious dick he started off as is>This is mostly a rights thing but he's got a storied history with the Fantastic Four (and especially Johnny) that never gets any mentionThere's also a bunch of storylines that never got a "real" adaptation, just bits and pieces merged into other things
>>150646535>struggles to balance responsibilitythey all have it, then again this is not exclusive to Peter
>>150647704Peter never needed a mean streak.
>>150648990I think he does. Him not stopping the burglar because he was developing an ego and didn't feel the need to help anyone but Ben and May is way better than him being wronged by the venue owner and ignoring the crook out of petty revenge. It makes his guilt feel more genuine.
>>150648990But he had one, and that mean streak is essential to making his early relationships with the public and other heroes work unless you want to abandon that dynamic.
>>150647318Spectacular or TAS
>>150648860Flash and Peter obviously started connecting again in Spectacular. It just got cut short.
>>150646535None of them are like my personal headcanon about the character, therefore they are objectively wrong portrayals, every single one of them, because I am smart and important, and objectively right./thread
>>150648990Yes he did, its the only reasonable explanation for why his life ends up so consistently shitty. He doesn't help hold a burglar that gets his uncle killed, he can't help but get offended and go off on various heroes he interacts with so he never ends up with any team, he can barely hold down a job half because he'll eat his shoe during an interview.Peter is the kind of guy to go>Here's all your rent money, on time even! Now get out of my face. Hah, that shut her up! Wait a minute, THAT WAS ALL MY MONEY I'M A FUCKING IDIOTHe rushes into shit without thinking because he's a hothead and it fucks up his social life but is a boon for his hero work.
>>150649554>He doesn't help hold a burglar that gets his uncle killed,This one right here actually contradicts your whole idea. Peter did have a mean streak. I mean I don't know how you read this so wrong but reading comprehension is a thing that is spotty sometimes. Peter lets the burglar go because he stars getting a mean streak. Fighting for money, the wrestling shit, is his mean streak. "Wrestling is fake" you say, missing the point or trying to jump to another branch. He gets off on the power trip of lifting big dudes up helplessly. I don't know how else you can read Peter seeing a robber run past him, a cop saying, "Stop that guy!" and Peter leaning against a wall and telling the cop its not his problem, as anything pther than a mean streak. He didn't f-bomb the cop? Peter alsmot kills the burglar too, until he realizes who it is. Closed loop. His meanstreak caused the worsts hit to happen to him.
>>150649554his life is shit because he places responsibility(guilt) over reason.Peter can't put a baby in MJ because Mysterio needs his asshole licked or else he will bomb the town. it's anus licking time.
>>150649580You're a faggot up your own assHe was a cunt before he got the powers, he was a cunt after he got the powers, he only toned down his cuntishness after his uncle died but still couldn't control himself in the heat of the moment when dealing with bullshit
>>150649648So what you're arguing is that he should just remain a cunt?
Sad I get better Spiderman stories from 4chan posts than anything Hollywood could shit out
>>150646535He never accepts responsibility for stealing Paul's destiny.
>>150647704I think you hit the nail on the head. Adaptions are all too willing to just do away with his rough edges. There's a part of him that's resentful. There's a part of him that wants to knock his problems over, humiliate the people who trouble him, thump his chest, and just revel in being number one. Even if it's not pretty or agreeable, it's so very human. That's something people miss about his origin, I feel. It's not just a momentary lapse in judgement he can do a 180 from. The asshole part of him that is willing to let a crook go because he's too busy riding high is still there. It will always be there. It doesn't go away because he fucked up or gained a pathological sense of responsibility. It still makes him want to trade blows with Flash or crash the Torch's party. He has a long, long journey of taming that, and ignoring it is a disservice.
>he is le nurd like me!
>>150649554Isn't he supposed to be smart by the way? This is something that I act, and I'm stupid.
>>150649866How smart are you, though? And don't say you're wear glasses, that doesn't count!
>>150650409>How smart are you, though?I am the smarterest person in the entire univarse!
>>150649580>Peter lets the burglar go because he stars getting a mean streak.Nah
>>150649876>Isn't he supposed to be smart by the way?Bro, you can be the smartest guy in the world and still fall prey to your emotions and ego. Intelligence ≠ personality or temperament.
>>150646561Nah. Peter being Turbo-Chad is weird. F3
>>150650942
>>150650409>Missing the point entirelyMy point was that too many people (including most writers) see Spiderman as a self insert for them
>>150646535They're afraid to give him some flaws and some edge. Pete's a genius but he's also supposed to be a shitty teen, not some goody two-shoes
>>150650516What issue?
>>150646535Early Peter or Ditko Peter is very aggressive for the modern, bland protagonist character. And keep in mind that Peter himself was quite bland. Since there were CC restrictions and he had superhero work. What is interesting about his early years is that he does not treat it as work. His job is taking photos, the circus, and television. And, of course, taking care of his aunt. Another problem is that people read Objectivism into Peter, since then, people have used Ditko's personal politics, and that totally period-accurate civil rights history to paint this early Peter as a proto-incel or Objectivist talking head. What bothers me is that no one complains about the supposedly progressive Superman only having white people.
>>150650942>>150651145Peter turned into a turbo-chad during college when the constant physical training of being spider-man really kicked in and stayed as one up till the 2000s when they softened him up to be a normally in shape person.
>>150648990Your opinion is factually wrong.
>>150649028That and Uncle Ben dying later rather than immediately after letting the crook go gives him time to build ego and really think there are no consequences to his actions
>>150646535Which of these portrayals of Peter Parker is better than the original comics run?
>>150653003You don't know the meaning of words.
>>150646535Is this supposed to be Peter Parker?
>>150646535The mike morales
>>150646683MTV is golden-hazel, just like in the comics. '94 is pale green, which is decently close to hazel.
>>150647318Don't listen to the first guy. Ralph Bakshi was a fan of the comics, so watch the first episode of the season 2 - it's 1:1 retelling of Amazing fantasy #15. Then Bakshi realized absolutely nobody at Marvel, including Stan Lee, cares about their cartoon series, and it became the epitome of QUALITY we know today.
>>150652007Sadly this
I don't know why everyone says he's always made out to be a teenager in this thread. In the 90s series and the first movies, he's a college student/adult
>>150652007Unfortunately that
>>15064653590s Peter was way too buff and handsome for "fresh out of high school" Peter.
>>150656534>just like in the comicsPeter's eye color in the comics constantly change color between golden-hazel(predominant), blue and sometimes green.
>>150658153We have all of those in the OP. I suppose that makes all of them comic accurate kek.
>>150646535What's with this portrayals of Peter Parker?
>>150658074Is this better?
>>150660211lol
>>150649661Him having a cunt streak that he can just barely control is important for every major part of his character and story. That he is scarred for life about wanting to assume responsibility for every single thing he see's, for wanting to intervene at every possible moment he can, doesn't change the fact that he's the guy who will crash a good friend's party on a whim or immediately snap at an established super team for yanking his chain and go on the warpath against them. His best feats of styling on other super heroes almost always come right after he goes>fuck your stupid bullshitnot when then they're being evil or some shit
>>150650942t. started reading Spider-man after 2000
>>150660211What did they do to my boy?!
>>150650942Pete was a turbo chad until BND turned him into a milksop
>>150658074He's not a fresh out of high school Peter, he's been in ESU for a while too
>>150646535What is the point with portrayals of Peter Parker?
>>150647318>>150649433Jesus Christ how could it NOT be the 60s version? I know some of you guys don't read comics but you don't watch the shows either?
>>150652368>What bothers me is that no one complains about the supposedly progressive Superman only having white people. You again.
>>150660211Where are his gains!?
>>150646535That he's in high school for only 30 fucking issues. I have no interest in any adaption that is focused on high school, even Spectacular.
>>150647704Right on exactly. I am slowly reading through the original Spider-Man stuff all the way from the beginning and have been loving it, only about four or six issues back during the first thirty felt like a bore to read, and seeing Peter struggle, but also get himself a couple of wins, in both Peter and Spider-Man lifes, is addicting, and it's just non stop bangers after ish 40 or something.I really wish Peter still had that anger management issue chip on his shoulder attitude in his movies. I grew up on the Raimi Man movies, but man they're hard to watch now because PETER WOULDVE BEEN AN ASSHOLE AT LEAST ONCE, without a symbiote that makes him emo. Man, Maguire is such a push over!
>>150646535none of these guys had to deal with the threat of Paul
>>150646535Peter the Portrayal Parker.
>>150658045How unfortunate.
>>150662344>how could it NOT be the 60s version?67 is way to campy and goes off the rails almost immediately in season 2. If we're just talking about season 1 and the origin story episode then yes, you can make a case for it being faithful to the source materiel in that it is very episodic but it also misses out on Peter's school life and aunt May is in like 3 episode. It's just Peter, Betty ang JJ.
>>150649028>>150649792Isn't he right though? It's pretty weird to expect some wrestler to stop a guy with a gun.
>>150647704Most people wouldn't really enjoy a show or movie where Peter is just an angry mopey angsty teenager.
>>150664936All he had to do was trip the guy up and it would’ve slowed him down He could’ve done it with no issue considering his power set and the security guard seeing him overpower other wrestlers with ease
>>150665030That's why Teenage Peter only lasted till issue 28 of the original run before graduating, so only three years IRL.Really a Spider-Man show should only have a Highschool Peter for a season, or ideally half a season if not for the sheer production cost, before graduation. Or hell we have seen the origin enough times, so just start him at college and have the season 1 arc being him mellowing out with flashbacks as needed.Really the Idea of Peter Parker as a "Teenage Hero" is a massive misconception as he has been an adult in mainline for 60 or so years now.
>>150665030>mopey angstyI don't remember Peter being either of those.Angry, yes, but not mopey or angsty.
>>150665304Mopey or angsty are the Tobey and Andrew movie.
>>150646535>Peter being an autistic loser nerd and never growing beyond that>Peter being almost spineless without the Symbiote
>>150648860>>150649439>Flash and Peter start becoming friends in Spectacular Spider-Man>canceled>Flash and Peter start becoming friends in Amazing Spider-Man films>canceledfucking gay
>>150664936Peter isn't enough of a Chud to lie to himself. Its why he struggles so much with himself, because he can decently do a retrospective his actions and their case and effect.Peter has angst episodes, because he can in retrospect spot his flaws. He could have tripped that robber and been smug about it, or he could have done his civic duty.. Instead he connects 2+3=5 after Ben dies, and has severe angst episodes. Its endearing. What is also endearing is that JJ as a counterpart only works so long he keeps having outburst and angst episodes. JJ doesn't work when Spiderman is ultracool.
>>150646535Don't be the Portrayals of Peter Parker.
Why does the last one look like the guy from Atlantis
>>150667812We like that. We like Milo
>>150652825Oh shit. Looking good Pete
They don't have PIZZA TIME!
>>150665271My plan is to have Peter's high school graduation happen in episode 1. so it telegraphs to the audience we're doing an adult Peter Parker Spider-Man story.
