Why does the voice acting suck so much in indie productions? Home Movies, an extremely low-budget cartoon, has infinitely better voice acting and two of the stars aren't even voice actors. Fucking Melissa was voiced by a producer/writer.

I don't get it. It feels like everyone being hired is an anime dub reject.

Even Bonus Stage, a web series that only nostalgic people like, has the main leads voiced by a guy who has a solid grasp of comedic timing. Dude probably never voice acted in his life before he had to animate his first episode. There are people with industry experience grabbing the worst actors imaginable.

People will only remember Blockhead because I'm bringing it up, and it manages to have really good line delivery for an artist who simply couldn't afford to pay anyone other than himself. Meanwhile shit like KoG sound like placeholder voices for half the characters.

Yeah guess what most indie-budget VAs are.

People who advertise themselves as VAs are almost always people who try to copy other VAs and do what they do, so you have a huge amount of theater kid losers who only know how to ham it up and make squealing and grunting sounds putting themselves out there. Look at demo reels for youtube funny voice dudes who read memes or comic strips aloud. That's the average quality out there.
>>
Because they creators voice the characters and most of them can't act for shit
>>
Thank you. I thought I was the only one that really couldn't stand how awful and "anime dub-like" most indie VAs are today

Andrea Romano was one of the greatest voice directors of all time not because she had some magic touch but because she realized that the actor part of voice actor was just as important as the voice part

That's why she hired a lot of people doing television and off-Broadway

YouTube is a poor substitute to that sort of experience because you're getting no direct feedback on your performance in the moment at all

Melissa did a great job.

being made by people with stage experience and know how to talk into the mic and actually entertain people with their delivery
Brendan Small, H Jon Benjamin and Janine Ditullio all have experience in standup
even Melissa Bardin Galsky was a talent coordinator so she had to know what she was doing when coordinating

Voice acting is a dying art in the west, there's straight up nobody left in the industry who knows what they fuck they are doing, from the top down.
>>

How did it get to be this way? :(
>>
"Hailey's On It" has professional adults doing the voices and still somehow has far worse direction than something like "Hey Arnold" which is mostly kids. Are directors getting worse?

That happened a long time ago, there are no good voice directors left. None of them understand what you actually need to get out of a good VA performance, and instead just want people who speak "naturally" and give "grounded" performanced. Add that together with the fact that all of voice casting these days is just "match face color and sexuality to character" and you end up with bland bullshit 100% of the time.

Hiring streamers with 0 acting skills that just use their normal talking voice because they make the funny videos on youtube. That's all voice acting really is, "ACTING", which a lot of these modern or indie cartoons voice actors don't do. Makes sense for indie since its probably cheaper but usually their cartoons have no acting needed where a lot of them is just inserting themselves in their cartoons. Another reason is directors and networks not giving a shit.

Ironically there are like 2 Disney cartoons with an anime VA directing them. Can't really say if there's good so I'll let you judge.

I'm glad with all of those memes floating around that people understand what I mean when I talk about "anime voice acting". For the longest time people acted like they had no clue what I was talking about when I talked about how much I hated english anime voice acting.

Home Movies still cast comedians who understood the art of delivering a line in the funniest way, or conversely, the art of playing off their co-star in the funniest way. Indie cartoons are something ANYONE can make. That leads to a whole range in quality.

Speedy Gonzales would either be banned from tournaments or the only character anyone plays as, except the rare few that main Tweety.

Not just the fact that the entire premise of the cartoon is lame and gay, I couldn't sit through the pilot of Loki IRL partly because of the voice acting. Pan can't act, and he has no vocal range, and voices several characters. A horrible combination.

I literally would rather watch Tamers12345 videos and he uses ancient text-to-speech software.

>Home Movies, an extremely low-budget cartoon, has infinitely better voice acting and two of the stars aren't even voice actors
The bulk of Home Movies dialogue was adlib sessions that were cut up, preened and selected for animation. You don't need to be good when you can just talk shit for an hour and choose the best bits, you are going to eventually stumble onto something half-decent. It's literally what they did for Disney Aladdin because Robin Williams was not a voice actor with a great deal of experience, so the studio just allowed him to do hours worth of impressions and jokes in the recording booth before sending the audio off to animators to try and work out what the fuck they could even do to make any of it seem like it made sense to the scene or story.
>>
>>150653170
>>150653182
It's really very simple: proper dialogue is a back-and-forth exchange between two actors and emulating that in a situation where two people are recording lines in isolation is incredibly difficult.
The best productions have AMAZING voice direction or else record multiple people at a time so they can hear each other.
Bonus Stage worked because it was all one guy that knew exactly how he wanted all the dialogue to flow.

This is only true for the first season. Once they moved to Flash, they became much more tied down to a script with only a bit of adlib here and there.
