It's a simple, amusing sequence. I have a hard time trying to find places here for collected Peanuts comics. I have Andrews McMeel (two of em) and three from Titan Comics. I can't say I've made up my mind about colors vs black/white. Takes some getting used to, I suppose.

Editor thought it was a fun snappy name and better than 'Charlie Brown And Friends'
Schulz said fine and regretted it for the rest of his life, he hated the name 'Peanuts'
>>
>>150667465
I thought Peanuts were a cutesy nickname for kids?
>>
>>150667465
Because 'Lil' Folks' was too close to another comic and the editor changed the name at the last minute when he noticed it, and Schultz never bothered to change it back.
>>
>>150660206
dunkin on charlie brown rigjt from the rip
>>
>>150667465
I know it's not the real reason, but for decades I thought it was because the kids' heads were all shaped like peanuts (except for the round-headed kids like Charlie Brown and Peppermint Patty). I swear I must have read it somewhere, because I'm not bright enough to make that connection myself.

While I think it's possible to go too far in seeing the Lucy/Schroeder strips as the breakdown of his marriage, it's hard to resist. I think it was Watterson who pointed out that spending all day practicing classical music on a toy piano is like the perfect metaphor for what a cartoonist does.

>>150670620
It's also why for a couple of decades the Sunday strips were always titled "Peanuts featuring Good Ol' Charlie Brown." GOCB was the title Schulz wanted but it was too late to change it officially.

The problem is that when the strip started, he didn't know Charlie Brown would be the star. If he had pitched calling it "Charlie Brown" instead of "Li'l Folks" in 1950 they'd probably have taken it.

Interesting idea, anything goes wrong, blame it on Charlie Brown. Broken window, Charlie Brown did it! Said something you shouldn't have, "W-Well Charlie Brown said," etc.

Soon Charlie Brown become "The Kid" you know which one I'm talking about. And it eventually it just takes on a life of its own.

Until one day... a moving van comes in and... well that's another story entirely.

Some people don't get over their first love. They still live past it. Maybe it's for the better that folks don't actually think/feel the same way these days. It does you no good and you know it's pointless to be hung up about 'what could've been' and in some ways, it can make you seem ungrateful if you still find someone to be with later in life. But I guess I appreciate the honesty in that strip, perhaps in a way a cautionary tale. Like that old

I generally prefer the black and white strips too. When they are in colour, it's never as consistent as I like across years of strips. I remember during a presentation at Beaglefest, an in-person meetup of Peanuts fans, one of the slides showed all the various palettes used over the years repeated with one strip. Wish I took a photo.
I otherwise really like the switch to digital colouring between 1997 to 2000, done by Paige Braddock. Interesting to think Sparky was alive to see the strip be displayed on computer screens.

If I remember right the strip lasted long enough for Sally to make a Harry Potter reference near the end.

I understood that reference

How would've the comic have been after 9/11 if Charles didn't die
>>

They're like 8-10 years old. Pretty sure their attachment isn't sexual attraction.

For me, the best part is Charlie Brown is both oblivious to their attraction to him, and uninterested because he's fixated on the unattainable little red-haired girl.

It never really touched on political issues or world news. I doubt it would have dealt with 9/11 any more than it dealt with Watergate or the Tet Offensive.

How exactly did that hook audiences? Obviously peanuts has great jokes, but why such a simple one here? We don't even know anything about Charlie brown yet.

It didn’t really hook audiences, it took several years for it to get popular.

The strip was originally an extension of Schulz’s Li’l Folks strips where kids talk like a cross between children and neurotic adults. So this strip starts out like it could be about cute kids who like each other and then subverts it in the punchline.

Retroactively it became a great introduction because Charlie Brown soon became the star and slowly developed into a loser who everyone dumps on, which he wasn’t really at first.

It's hard for us today to grasp how truly revolutionary Peanuts was at the beginning.

That first strip immediately set Peanuts apart from the other gag-a-day and serial comics of its day. The minimalist visual style was extremely novel at the time. The twist punch line was not what was not the kind of thing associated with children in popular culture. And its deadpan delivery was also something you didn't see in the funnies. Syndicates were attracted by the strip's appeal to both children and adults, without any adult characters. It took a few years for Peanuts to really hit its stride with its combination of thoughtful maturity and imaginative fantasy, but it only took those few years for Peanuts to become a cultural juggernaut for the next few decades, becoming a major touchstone of American society, while completely changing the trajectory of comic art.

It was also pretty damn funny.

Reading this strips, it hit just how much Peanuts walked so South Park could run.

The other innovation Peanuts did was to shatter notions of "childhood innocence" by showing exactly how much kids could be utter assholes to each other. The girls in particular are real cunts at times. This is just like how kids are in real life.

The only thing South Park did was add vulgarity and toilet humor to make it even more verisimilar to real kids.

I love that "I want a Dog for Christmas" is pretty much a love letter to Rerun, who became big in the strips in the 90's using his strips to make a special, plus it's nice to see Spike.

>Charlie Brown Christmas tales
It's short because it was made as filler when ABC got rights to Peanuts specials, they of course added more commercials, to keep the special in tact without chopping things out it had to run a little past 30 minutes so Christmas tales was made to fill the gap for the rest of the hour

Schroeder is nice to Chuck, even Linus can be a cunt to him sometimes.

In this comic strip all the girls are complete shitheads while the boys are complete doormats

>Human lasagna juice
This muddies the crude joke Rorschach was making
>Human bean juice
>Human being juice
There are quite a few off color remarks Rorschach makes, mostly while speaking to Big Figure, that I appreciate Moore uses to show Walter's stunted in his interactions due to his upbringing and traumatic encounters but still has a sharp, even if somewhat unwell, mind.
Most people assume Walter/Moore, is a grim humorless bastard but he's just a unique character you have to be willing to exit your comfort zone to understand.

Waitaminute, this isn't a Watchmen thread.

I'm very sure there's at least one actual story or novel about something sort of like this but can't retrieve it from memory at the moment and if there isn't one, there should be.
