It was basically Stevens turn to be a shithead with serious issues since he spent nearly his entire childhood running around and fixing shit to save Earth and later the Gem Empire, the partial problem is that this juxtaposition of confronting his adventures happening after a multi year time skip means that last 2 years have went swimmingly or that stuff is just bottled down even harder than the old stuff from the original series. The juxtaposition of cartoon logic and mythical hippie dippie bullshit being confronted with the harsh realities of the "real" world can work but the execution is very off. The awkwardness doesn't feel organic in the slightest stylistically with the series or from a meta context either.

To be fair, the van thing kinda skews people's perspective on Greg. It was a surprisingly mature and deep idea, no wonder they managed to fumble it, Basically, the entire continuation series was just one good idea after another thrown in, all worthy to be explored in depth, like what happened to the Gem Empire and its renegades, who was Steven's human family, Pink Pearl, what happened with Lars of the Stars and so on, but it should have been wrapping things up, not including even more shit that never gets followed up on. Also, Centipeedle/Nephrite, one of the most central characters in the series, present since the first episode and her arc following through everything not getting an episode with Steven and a proper sendoff is just fucking criminal, all these years later I'm so fucking mad about it I'm going to make some chili from scratch now to get my mind off of it, thanks OP.

The short episode runtime and their complete lack of ability to storyboard didn't help. Each episode feels like they just introduced something that would need an entire season to unpack properly, to fit the slow burn development and tone of the show before, but then they immediately jump on the next one and shovel even more shit on you. Damned if I know. SU first ending built upon the final season taking things in the direction of making the conflict into a metaphor for dealing with an overly-controlling and abusive family that won't accept you for who you are. In that context, ending things with Steven telling off White Diamond and saying "you can accept me for who I actually am, or you can get the hell out of my life" sort of works. Kinda. Metaphors shouldn't get bogged down in "but won't people be experiencing PTSD from all the shit your awful family put them through?"

The movie worked better as an ending by dialing in on one specific last bit of his mom's garbage that Steven cleaned up, emerging feeling good.

The trouble with Future was that the show reduced things down to a metaphor at the end of the conflict, then SUF flipped back to NOT treating things like a metaphor. Universe screwed the pooch by acknowledging all the destruction and damage, going so far as to zoom in on the fact that Steven has fucking PTSD. You can't end the conflict with a cartoonish "and then he defeated the evil empire by laughing at it, and making the god-Queen realize she was fallible" then shove in an epilogue about how traumatized the main character was afterward. Suddenly we were meant to remember that there had been real stakes and trauma, which in turn meant that letting the Diamonds off with a slap on the wrist doesn't work with the story any more.

Future fucked it all to hell by acknowledging that the PTSD and shit was real, and undermining the whole "look, it's a metaphor, just enjoy the happy ending" angle they took with resolving the war. Steven's whole life fell apart and everyone BUT him got a happy ending, apparently just to say "it's okay to have PTSD and need therapy." Nobody wanted to watch Steven completely fall apart just to be told "he gets therapy later. Offscreen."

Adventure Time kind of ruined cartoons. Not directly but it was the first of its kind and it set the tone for the rest of the industry because it was successful. It wasn't actually a kids' show, it was for adults. The point of the show was to mock and deride the idea of boys wanting to be heroes, which is not something that kids are actually going to watch unless their parents are watching it. It introduced LGBT pandering in later seasons. None of the characters are good role models which is further evidence that adults are the target audience.

If the show had been on Adult Swim instead of hiding itself among the other kids' shows it wouldn't have been so bad but it set the standard that "kids' cartoons" were actually for adults while being disguised as kids' entertainment, with a self deprecating millennial sense of humor. I know that fucked up cartoons for kids are nothing new but the major difference is that the Adventure Time generation of cartoons isn't even interesting to kids. The fandom is basically all adults, and the creators are way too plugged into the adult fandom which is how the pandering started.

And now we're at the point where Cartoon Network is nothing but Teen Titans Go reruns. You know why? Because Teen Titans Go, for as absolutely trash it is, is specifically made for kids and is basically adult repellent.
