Is there any way for the industry to change the expectations of storyboard artists, or is the genie out of the bottle now?

So many boards are expected to be cleaned, shaded, detailed, complex, and sometimes even have keyframe animation. When Walt Disney had his artists pump out good storyboards, it was cause he was trying to convince bankers to loan him the money. TMNT animatics shouldn't have to be practically animated.

I'm sure the person who made this has no idea why anime is so much more popular than cartoons nowadays.

Well even though it's shooting for the stars in terms of changing how Animation is done in the west, I'd prefer it if the Director actually did the fucking storyboard. Like that is literally how it's done in Japan, it's not 10-20 motherfuckers pitching shit and having a director come in and go Yay or Nay, the director should put pen to paper and draw that shit himself. Not that the former method doesn't work but that type of thinking was for when cartoons were mostly gag based back in the black and white days, so while it works for cartoons that don't aim for stakes, the burden for more serious attempts at animation should come straight from the directors head, and his staff should be the ones to making what the director has made the best it possibly can look

YOU ARE AN ANIMATOR. YOUR JOB IS TO PRODUCE 12 FRAMES PER SECOND. YOU WERE SO INCOMPETENT THAT YOU WERE DELEGATED TO KEYFRAMES WHILE SWEATSHOPS DID THE BETWEENS. WHEN THAT PROVED TO BE TOO MUCH FOR YOU, YOU WERE DELEGATED TO STORYBOARDS. SIMPLIFIED COMICS THAT SHOW THE ACTUAL ANIMATORS IN SOUTH KOREA WHAT TO DO. NOW EVEN THIS IS TOO MUCH FOR YOU. "Oh boo hoo, the standards for storyboards are too high! I should be paid fat dosh so I can live in gentrified Cali in exchange for doodling concept art for the koreans to figure out and then make into animation for peanuts."
YOU ARE SO INCOMPETENT, SO REDUNDANT, THAT YOU ARE BEING REPLACED BY SOULLESS CHIPS AND CABLES. YOUR ONE USE IN LIFE IS TO BE PUT DOWN AND HARVESTED FOR YOUR ORGANS.

Like, son of a bitch. I'm tired of the entitlement of these motherfuckers. They went into animation because they thought it would be fun and it would gain them status. And when it proved too hard for them, they debased their entire industry. They demand to be paid good wages so they can live their dream lives doing their dream job in expensive areas. It doesn't work this way. You work to make money so you can eat and then so you can afford your passion. You think the miner, the steel worker, the garbage man and the sewage worker are doing their fucking dream jobs?! And they are important, unlike animators.
Every now and then an "animator" will say "If it weren't for us then who would produce your cartoons for you? Checkmate, manchild!" Actual animators like the Disney Renaisaance animators have my respect and my sympathy. They put in the work, they had talent, and they were done dirty. They were all kicked out so unhumans like OP could take their place and produce the most simplified, noodly-limbed, shadeless, static blobs. Like Adventure Time, like Steven Universe, like Gumball. These are the cartoons they storyboarded for children and manchildren. Because the actual production was done by the korean sweatshops for pennies.

Funny, because most animators were paid by the literal foot of film. They could approximate the actual cost in paper, pencil, film, photography. So you were paid by how many drawing you could complete per week.

Tech just helped reduce that cost, so they paid you less for the same amount/quality of work.

It really is a glorious time where even something as cheap as an iPad mini and a few hundred bucks could let you actualize your own personal ideas into animation.

Most people are too lazy though, and want the work done for them. Hence outsourcing, and AISlop.

It's an industryfag thread. But I'll bite. The industry isn't as relevant as it used to be. Minecraft animations are better known than these high-profile cartoons. It's actually crazy how Minecraft took over the children's market.

>>150667548
keyframes are a step up from general animators, and storyboarding requires writing and creative visual responsibility beyond draftsmanship. They’re the ones who are going to shape what the animation is like the most. In your tantrum claiming to know how the industry should be handled, you’ve exposed how little you know.

Agreed indeed.

/co/ check out right now how many people worked on the Hannah & Barbera Tom & Jerry shorts and then check out how many people they need now for the new series of Tom & Jerry or even the shitty Dietrich & mediocre Chuck Jones ones.

Partly yes, but partly, "The entire American middle class is breaking down, dedicated artists and particularly animators are funded by economic surplus and require a certain amount of stability to work not just as individuals but in order to contribute to a the larger structure of an industry based in artistic production, which increasingly no longer exists." If we're losing animators, we're losing our national affluence in general. And it's not because of [insert stupid reason you picked up I dunno where], it's because massive amounts of production have to go to servicing existing debt and esoteric financial instruments which were creating to buttress a system that would otherwise collapse because Wall Street banksters and hedge funds bet the house and lost it multiple times on stunningly stupid/reckless trades, of which 2008 was simply the most publicized.
The person who can be passionate about not just their craft, but also being responsible for a bunch of other people and their ability to perform well enough to earn a living, while not knowing if they're going to be able to pay rent/buy food/pay for medical care is a rare person indeed. And most of those can do it for like 5-10 years tops before they simply keel over.
It doesn't help that so much of animation is institutional knowledge that you either have to be in the industry to pick up or else painstakingly reverse engineer by yourself. (See >>>/3/>>1015237)

You can blame the -10s where every showrunner under the sun insisted on having board-driven designs despite the actual content of their shows not requiring it. Do you really need storyboards for a cartoon where the majority of the time is spent with characters standing at 3/4 turn against a leveled, flat shot and all they're doing is having dialogue, occasionally switching over to a reverse shot style closeup to show a meme face?

Interesting because the rest of your post suggests you don’t think they should get to have food or a home in exchange for their work.
The second the Koreans start asking for more money you’ll be bitching and moaning again. You probably work a retail job thinking it’s as hard as working in a coal mine or a steel mill and are just jealous that people who draw can get a job drawing.
