how correlated do you think box office/views are to quality? i keep seeing people here shit on monkey wrench for having lower views.transformers one had low box office, but wasn't bad at all.Atlantis the lost empire had a bad box office (and a bad rotten tomatoes score too), but i see lots of people love it
>>150675549>how correlated do you think box office/views are to quality?they have a correlation in aggregate, that is to say good movies tend to do better than bad ones at the box officebut like you said, exceptions are almost as common as the rule, making it useless when evaluating movies gone with the wind is the highest grossing movie of all time, adjusted for inflation, but it was also in theatres for 20 years straight with very little competitionTF one had very poor marketing and by the time word of mouth spread around, the movie was already on its way out of theatres, movies with craploads of marketing make more money than ones without, all else equalcontext also matters, adam sandler doesnt exactly make thought-provoking cinema, but his humor has wide appealso his movies are always solid money makers despite generally being pannedin this case, you can either appeal to elitism and say that the unwashed masses will like anything or just admit that quality is subjective
>>150675549>Atlantis the lost empire had a bad box office (and a bad rotten tomatoes score too), but i see lots of people love itthis is another case of subjectivity the main complaint from critics is that even though the movie had pretty good animation, it felt too derivative of action-adventure movies and had pretty flat characters who only tended to get 1 or 2 scenes of characterizationthey also didnt appreciate the darker tone, feeling like it was trying too hard to emulate action movieswhereas the people who grew up on atlantis tend to like the movie for exactly the same reasons a lot of contemporary critics disliked itthey saw "genre throwback to adventure movies" as a positive, not a negative, especially since a lot of these young kids didnt even know of an adventure movie other than indiana jonesthe dark tone that critics didnt like was instead enjoyed, they found it a break from more kid-oriented movies they were used toflat characters werent the same deal-breakers that they were with critics, a lot of the audience were more willing to accept a character who exists to provide flavorthe mole is one of the most popular characters in the movie despite being a one-note character that epitomizes the lack of depth that critics didnt likeand it is also worth pointing out that some critics did like itroger ebert gave it a 3.5/4, and generally aligned more with the audience opinion that being an old-school action-adventure was actually a fresh change of pace
>>150675608>by the time word of mouth spread around, the movie was already on its way out of theatresi hate how quickly movies move out of theatres nowadays
The people who bitch about Atlantis just expected another sing song Disney movie.Just imagine how their portfolio would look nowadays if they didn't burn their hands with this against Shrek.
>>150675608>>150675662Well put and based at explaining things
>>150675693I know bringing up Ne Zha 2 in the box office convo will seem like a joke, but the wide release English dub barely got a chance at all in American theatres. I saw the box office tracking for it stop after 3 weeks. It had a bad opening against the Kpop Demon Hunters singalong, then was practically done for. No chance for word of mouth to spread
>>150675549But >Atlantishad great box office!!!
Neat movie.
