>>150678167One day I will build a proper shelf made of real wood plates and reinforcing metal bars rather than glue and wood shavings, but I'm a cheap and lazy bastard, so it's Ikea for the time being.
>>150678109Well it's been a while since the latest /shelf/ so I've got a ton of new stuff.THIS IS YOUR REMINDER TO BUY WILLIAM MESSNER-LOEBS BOOKS TO SUPPORT A CREATOR WHO DESERVES ITAlso: looking all the stuff I got in September makes me so glad to be a comic fan in this day and age. Sandman Mystery Theatre FINALLY fully collected, a third hardcover of Ashita no Joe, a second thick volume of Legend of Kamui, a big fucking book collecting all of WML's Journey... I just really love comics and there's so much good stuff available now.
>>150678445How's the quality of Homunculus? Is it censored at all?
>>150678480Quality's just fine. No censorship that I could tell. Some nice pairs of tits attached to some very unofortunate faces lol
>>150678109>most expensive comicProbably an issue of Kirby era Thor. Recent pick upsI really enjoyed Ran Like Hammers. SMT is great, of course. Batman Beyond is okay. DC compendiums smell funny.

I've been getting back into collecting floppies. Recently picked up about 50-60 Avengers books from my LCS. Nothing fancy in there but I like having more of a collection again.

>>150680813I only have a couple floppies and I just squeeze them in my 'messy shelf' wherever's space, like so.I get a big mixed box of them every couple years and then give them away as negotiation material whenever I cycle out omnibuses through craigslist. It's almost impossible to sell floppies even as complete sets, nobody wants them. Not sure why, they're very convenient for reading. I guess it's probably exactly the storage issue, you can't identify them by spine so you need to remember where which book is.

>>150692919It was a labor of love. LOSH is one of the most neglected series from DC, and I simply got tired of waiting for them to make official omnis.>>150693420You can find people willing to make custom covers all over the internet but Etsy, Instagram, and eBay are good starts. Custom omnis are a bit harder to find amd really depends on what you're looking to do. Traditional book binders have been fulfilling comic collectors requests for years, so they have tons of experience but they will require you to provide all of the comics and any/all designs. Hobbyists and independent book binders can be found on eBay, fan sites, Instagram, etc. Some work with converting floppies while others prefer to print from digital sources. Some of the more inventive ones will design covers and layouts themselves. It can get a little pricey depending on what you're after but it's worth it to make omnis that fulfill a particular niche.
>>150693980Damn, another guy taking pictures on a sickly green surface... the plague is spreading...
>>150678109I find it extremely fucking weird that there are people who consider themselves "comic fans" or "collectors" and whose collection fits on a single tiny shelf like in OP. My collection is in two apartments in two separate cities and spans a five-digit number of titles. I couldn't photograph it even if I tried cause it literally doesn't fit in either one of my apartments physically, it has to be split in both.
>>150694531I always thought of "collectors" as being people who hunt key issues and keep them in plastic. I'm just a comic reader personally
>>150694531who cares thothat stuff could fit on a tablet the size of a notebook
>>150694531I find it weird that people buy comics but never take them out of the packaging to read. In my eyes, a comic you can't real is worthless and if I had a comic that was worth $300, I would sell it to buy $300 worth of other comics.
>>150680813Word of advice for anyone considering the double-sized version of this. Don’t waste your money. It’s impossibly heavy when full.
i'm looking to get a power girl, wonder woman and spider-girl comicfor coomer reasons, yes
>>150693153There are some books that still only exist as fan translations and I'm looking into finding someone who is willing to illegally print and bind the scanslations.
>>150694560>I always thought of "collectors" as being people who hunt key issues and keep them in plastic. There's two kinds of collectors that aggravatingly are referred to by the same word. There's the kind that sees comics (or whatever else they're collecting) as primarily a way to extract wealth from other people. They're the ones buying graded and slabbed bullshit to sit in a vault, never to be read by anyone, possibly sold later to a bigger moron. They should be called something else in my opinion, scalpers maybe. Or "investors" if you want to be polite. Then there's the actual collectors. Actual collectors buy comics because they love comics. They have no motive beyond a desire to possess the thing they love, permanently. They never think about the resale prices of anything because they never sell anything. They are black holes that suck comics in and never let anything out, until it's pried from their cold, dead fingers. These are the real deal.

>>150696597if I could only take three Avengers runs to me on an island it would Stern, Busiek and Lee/Kirby
>>150680813multiple ways
Most controversial /shelf/ opinion?
>>150696845Really? Never cared for Kirby/Lee Avengers. It just felt like the duo had run out of steam by the time they got to Avengers. Roy Thomas is where the title takes shape for me, and I suspect the themes and characters that most fans adore came from Thomas and not Kirby/Lee.For me it's Top 5:1. Busiek 2. Stern3. Thomas4. Englehart5. ShooterHonorable mention: Byrne on WCA.
>>150697189To be fair the third spot was REALLY hard to choose. But Lee/Kirby is really fresh on my mind. I really like Englehart, Thomas and Shooter as well and if you asked me this question the next time we make this thread I may give you a different answer.
>>150697000Ditko is overrated. He's really really good but the praise has become worship. It's out of hand. Spider-Man was improved after he left but I'll give him Dr. Strange.
>>150697000Bone is just ok
>>150697212That's fair... and Kirby/Lee is a respectable answer in my fanboy brain regardless. It's not Bendis or Hickman at least.
>>150697250>It's not Bendis or Hickman at least.Anytime someone praises those runs it makes my tinnitus flare up.
>>150697000san lee is liar and a thief who betrayed his coworkers to make his own life comfortable.
>>150697274Exactly. It's like... what did you like about it? Was it when they killed a bunch of characters off in a cheap manner? Or when they added a bunch of characters with no history on the team and wrote everyone like a quippy teenager? I guess I'll bump with another custom series that relates to Avengers. This was a fever dream of a project, where I attempted to hit the highlights of both Avengers and JLA culminating in the classic Perez crossover.
>>150697552That's not controversial at all. Half of /co/ believes it and the other half just have the reactionary knee jerk defense of lee. The truth is honestly nuance, working relationships, business and breakdowns.
>>150697570Tried my best to capture most of the contents...
>>150697599And the spine art>>150697552Controversial? Maybe 20 years ago. Honestly, at this point the hate for Lee is overblown.
>>150697570>Exactly. It's like... what did you like about it?I wouldn't even really mind so much if they didn't always treat it like one of the greatest runs ever. I can understand a guilty pleasure or two. I actually have a weird fondness for a lot of the 90s Avengers. The leather jacket era into before the crossing but I won't pretend it's not what it is.>>150697617>>150697599Very nice books btw
most recent stuff of the last 3 months or so>>150697552not surprising when you check his early life section
>>150697216>Spider-Man was improved after [Ditko] leftI think the exact opposite.
>>150697953How's PKJ supes. I've been eyeing the compendium version. Busiek is good and I hear good things about the Jurgens. I haven't read a lot of post new 52.
>>150697997it's... different compared to the usual Superman stuff but pretty good.
>>150697985Yeah, that's why I acknowledge my opinion is controversial. I've heard the pro-Ditko rhetoric for a decades.I disagree. Ditko made Peter a bit too antisocial, a bit too argumentative. He was kind of a grump. After Ditko left successive writers expanded his supporting cast, added friends, finally dropped the Betty romance for some people his own age, and even had him grow as a man and forgive his former antagonists like Flash Thompson. He graduated high school, and then college. He moved out of his Aunt's house, moved to the city and became so much more than he was under Ditko's pen.
>>150697617>>150697552I think Lee is more important for the creation and success of Marvel's history than his critics want to admit. Especially the Ditko stuff.
>>150698344Self-correction: Peter graduated high school under Ditko's tenure.
>>150697000I think propping up mediocre comics has greatly harmed the comics medium.
>>150698374Pretty much. Stan Lee's direct contribution to each title is debatable but his most important function was more as an ambassador or carnival-barker to the general public. He was the public face of Marvel, and he got kids and young adults to read the books. He hyped up the books and his dialog, while corny as hell, served as a bombastic and easily digestible entry for young people getting into comics.Kirby was shy. Ditko was a recluse. Somebody had to advertise and Stan Lee was "The Man." Did he "write" any stunning stories? Not really... or, at least, not that anyone can reasonably verify. He contributed to Amazing Spider-Man and Fantastic Four to some degree at least. Personally, I never felt like the earliest of the Silver Age titles were particularly well written, so if they were all Kirby or all Ditko... well that's not high praise. It wasn't until Roy Thomas, Steranko, Steve Englehart, Jim Starlin, Steve Gerber, and Gerry Conway arrived that writing really took off. After that it reached even higher peaks with Roger Stern, Mantlo, Byrne, Simonson, Michelinie, Miller, Gruenwald, DeMatteis, and Claremont.
>>150696109Poor Little Luthor
>>150698519Marvel Silver Age felt a bit more modern but it was still very silver age.
>>150697000Almost any manga fight scene mogs almost any cape fight scene into oblivion.Cape action scenes consist of increasing numbers of characters throwing poses for the camera. If manga action is MMA, then cape action is WWE. Even worse, despite the entire genre building on the premise of superpowers there seem to be no series outside of super niche stuff like Über where powers are used tactically and characters apply abilities like rational adults instead of mental retards. 99% of cape fight scenes are resolved through plot contrivance or some basic rock-paper-scissor powermatching. There are some comics like Sin City and The Goon that capture old-school cinema brawling pretty well, but these again are on the fringes of what can be considered cape.
>>150698681Caring for all those figurines just seems like a dusting nightmare.

>>150697997It's different. The main issue when it was coming out was that everyone was expecting a War World arc, not the whole run. This resulted in a lot of people complaining that they were still on War World and wondering when the next arc would start.
I have a convention coming up soon and I was thinking of getting a book drawn in by one of the following:>Klaus Janson>Michael Cho>Dave Johnson>Jae Lee>Denys CowanI'm inclined to get Question Vol 2 drawn in with Lady Shiva, since I have the first volume drawn in. >>150700558I'm glad you noticed.
>>150700944I really want to pick up more Absolutes. I have a few and they're probably one of my favorite "fancy" formats to read. Nice hard cover, good blown up art work, not too heavy and you even get a little ribbon. Omnibus should seriously have a ribbon, how much does it honestly cost to add a length of fabric.
>>150696281>>150696332Gotta take the bad with the good. Shows you what *not* to do, if nothing else.>>150698681>CAPED>>150699165Oh like you wouldn't believe, but it makes for a nice routine to keep things zen for me.Guess I forgot my /v/ armory, so here it be
>>150701447It's probably my favorite prestige format, and it's odd that Marvel hasn't tried to rip it off. The new Marvel Archive Edition books are a neat concept but no protective sleeve... seems like they just went wider. Picked up the Secret Wars one, not sold on Symbiote Saga, and it's nice but didn't knock my socks off. Feels like Marvel Masterworks were killed off to make room for the new format and it's not a valid replacement.

>>150700409>>150700944For a shelf that overlaps so much with my collections there's a startling lack of DC archive editions here.>>150699008>If manga action is MMA, then cape action is WWEWhat if I think MMA is dogshit garbage?
>>150702010I like both and dislike east vs west bait.
>>150701758>Feels like Marvel Masterworks were killed off tI am not happy about that. I don't have a huge amount I admit but that line is one of the oldest ongoing (till then) types of trades. I can't imagine having following it for years hoping to get a whole run like that and then BAM one day decades later they're like LOL NO.
>>150702082>DC ArchivesI missed the boat on those for the most part. When they first came out I had no money, then during the majority of their heyday, I was overseas. By the time I came back the Archives were dead, but I collected a few series: LOSH, Hawkman, Plastic Man, among others.Masterworks were my jam though, and Marvel was smart enough to keep them going for ages. Until, like >>150702281 said *BAM*I'm in the process of moving my shelves around but... I have every Masterwork except for like West Coast Avengers (The Omnis were fine). >>150702084I also like both, but it has to be said. The guy I replied to is being stubborn. I want comics to be good, not pretend they're doing everything right.
>>150702782Stan Actually did more for any creative to that point.
>>150702804What books by Jae Lee would you recommend picking up? I haven't read much of his work, but I do like his art style.
>>150702961Well I've got the John Byrne Sub-Mariner omnibus and Jae Lee takes over the art duties on that, crazy shift
Looks like Marvel jacked up the prices of their Epics again, new volumes are $55-$60 MSRP now
>>150703102Even if you can still get them cheaper online it's getting retarded. I only need just a few more to complete the lines I care about but I worry DC might follow suit with their finests sooner rather than later.
>>150702082>What if I think MMA is dogshit garbage? Then you don't like fights.
>>150697997I loved it. Good story, good vibes, Amazing art. It's not what you'd expect from a Superman story, but Clark feels undeniably Superman.Sometimes it feels like there's something missing between issues as it jumps forward in time when you're not expecting it, but it's not a big problem. The compendium is missing some stuff that I feel should have been included (the omnibus doesn't have this problem), both preceding and following it. There are some slim trades that cover those gaps (photos included), but that's just an additional expense. It's not completely necessary, but you do feel their absence.

Selling comics, even omnibuses, for a fair price, is a fucking chore. With some of my larger books I went 1/2 of the cheapest amazon price, but that only increased the number of watchers. I usually have 50+ books on offer but I'm lucky if I sell one or two per month. I've started giving some away as birthday presents to mixed responses. I take excellent care of my comics so they're all as good as new from the bookstore and of course they're much more expensive than novels but I'm getting the sense that people think I'm cheaping out on them. Maybe I should just donate to my public library idk
>>150709445If you have all these things, surely you have more comics. Let's see it.
>>150709689Okay.
>>150709936
>>150709957there's some overlap here, because I moved some stuff around since the last time I took pics of the other shelves. Not pictured: Nexus, Headlopper, Some Brandon Graham stuff, like Prophet, and a truly shameful number of savage Dragon Trades.
>>150710053I don't know how I feel about Triangle 2 covering Death and Return. I don't have the omni for that, just the tpbs, but that's gotta sting for people who do. I was really expecting them to just sort of stop there, then pick up afterwards. Plus I generally prefer less heavy books.
Latest haul. Yes im a dcfag
>>150710105I'm kind of glad, actually. Omis are generally too big but Death and Return is waaay too big and I'll be happy to unload it on eBay or whatever.
>>150710131>Yes im a dc chad
>>150710131Ben je ook een vrouw of zo?
>>150709936That's a lot of Marvel. You want a sealed Marvels Platinum, that big ass Alex Ross book?I've posted before about the fact that I have a bunch of them lying around due to a shipping error a few years back lmao. 50€ + shipping cost through paypal with buyer protection, if you're interested I'll leave you my protonmail. Might be a really good or a really bad deal, depending on your location.I don't want to come off as a shill though. I've done some secret santas on different boards over the years so I've sent things to anons before, but international shipping got way more pricey the last couple years so idk.
>>150710288No thanks, Anon. the only ross I actually like is Full Circle. But I appreciate the offer.
>>150710261Nee. Maar Cass is beste Batgirl en ik heb de Huntress book voor Vic Sage gekocht. Ik vindt zowiezo de vrouwelijke DC characters leuk.
>>150710328That's fine. Can you recommend me an entry type Marvel book? I'm not big into cape, I've pretty much only read Watchmen, All Star Superman, some of the highly rated Batman stuff and Sandman, which is technically part of the regular DC universe or so I've been told.
>>150710131 (you)These images are months behind but oh well

>>150710131Stupid sexy bat don't stretch like that on the cover.
>all these omnibusesAm I really the only fag here who still buys trades anymore?
>>150710476Not pictured;>The Mike Carey run of Hellblazer (3 TPs)>The entire Tin Tin collection in Dutch/Belgum including the based Tintin hunts Africa's wildlife: the book>Sandman Mystery Theatre compendium 2 (my beloved)>STAS Compendium 1.>Steph Batgirl vol 2>Zot!>Absolute Swamp Thing>Delano Hellblazer Omnibi and Ennis Hellblazer omnibus>Probably forgetting a few>>150710519I prefer TPs but at least with Omnibi i have an excuse as to why i wont lend it.>>150710495DONT LEWDLE MY DAUGHTERU
>>150710519Depends on the series. I mostly prefer epic and finest size myself but a few times I've bought standard sized trades just to be frugal. The issue is that a lot of these omnis tend to be for older runs that don't quite have the same amount of options. Trades are easy for newer stuff but there's only really one way to collect others.
>watch Omar's review on new Savage Sword Omi>Mentions that there will be 19 of these things by the time Titan is done Crom that's a lot of omni. Between the titan reprints and marvels old ones I have all of Barbarian and the released savage swords but that's gonna end up needing a wall of it's own. That's not even getting into the King series and the potential Dark Horse re releases.
>>150710495What is this, a stupid sexy bat for ants?
>>150710519Yes, definitely. Also, everyone here except you is a beefcake from lifting omnibuses every day, even the femanon.
>>150710519Never been a fan of them and glad that we're seeing more and more 'premium' releases take the route of stuff like this instead. Far more readable while still looking nice on a shelf.
>>150710594Are all of those stories actually good, or are you a paper collector? Lots of anons here collect paper.
>>150694531I bought comics for almost twenty years but had to sell my collection for food when I was in college. I hated the idea of lugging around all my long boxes and realized I had only ever really read the comic once then filed it away never to be seen again. So when I got back into comics I started getting them digitally and if it was something I really like I’d buy a fancy trade of it. Last year I was feeling nostalgic for having the actual floppie so I set up a pull list at my LCS for the first time since 2009. I couldn’t believe how cheap the paper is comics are being printed on now and how terrible the colors look on them so I went back to digital for my monthly comics>thanks for attending my TED talk
>>150710686>thisdon't do this to my wallet.
>>150710443The good thing about marvel is you probably know enough about most characters that you can jump right in midstream. The reason this is good is that Silver Age stuff is not for everyone. My suggestions for good places to start:Simonson Thor V1 337-382Stern's run on Amazing Spider-Man V1 224-252John Byrne's Fantastic Four 209-295Each of these has some fill in issues written/drawn by others, but they are very rare. If you want to tap into the Silver Age, the best places to start are Amazing Spider-Man V1 #1* and FF V1 #1. For Thor, I'd suggest Journey into Mystery V1 #121. The character has been in the book for a while at that point but 121 is a turning point, imo and where they figure out what they're trying to do with the character. *The first Spider-Man story is in Amazing Fantasy #15, but that is almost always included in any collection you're going come across.
>>150710686Which of these is the sleeve, the colorful or the black one?
>>150710519I'll take the material in whatever way its most easily available. Content is more important to me than format.
>>150710443Watchmen is also technically part of the regular DC universe now.>Can you recommend me an entry type Marvel book?https://libgen.li/file.php?id=98151979
>>150710801Did you pull the trigger on all of these at once?
