Jesus fucking christ this is the best the show has looked in forever and the most original looking CG animation I've seen since Spider-Verse...How the fuck did they make this with a TV budget?

Adam Paloian, the director of this short, stated how Nick gave them full creative control with it.

Honestly I had optimistic expectations but didn’t expect it to be this fucking good, I loved how expressive and visually interesting it was, definitely the best SB has ever looked in CGI.

Usually my biggest issue about current SpongeBobs animation is that, while sure it is indeed expressive and good-looking for modern tv standards, the timing is a bit weak and they don’t play around with angles all that much (most shots are that perfect flat horizontal POV we see in every other modern cartoon these days), this short fixes those issues and doesn’t feel style-over-substance like most NuBob episodes, the writing was just as enjoyable as the visuals and almost pre-movie quality. Hope to see more shorts like this.

I don't think it's 100% CGI
A few parts looked like matte painting just being moved around like an animation cel. Some of the effects were clearly painted stills with minor animation too.
Certainly a great use of CGI and a lot of work went into it but it's not achieved solely by digital graphics.

The Day the Earth Blew Up looked amazing and had only a 15 million dollar budget, for comparison shitty animated CGI films like K-Slop Demon Hunters have 100 million dollars in their budget.

Day the Earth Blew Up was really nice animation, but only animation nerds care about Looney Tunes at this point. K Pop Demon Hunters looked great, but it mostly did well because of the soundtrack and appealing to nerds

I’m furious that this is good. SpongeBob shouldn’t be good anymore. It shouldn’t even still be around. Making it good only incentivizes Nick to keep churning it out and keep making the first 3 seasons a smaller and smaller part of this shit heap of a toddler franchise. Pre-movie should be the only good form of SpongeBob. Why can’t they just let it be already!

Ironic how this premiered the same day that Sora came out with AI SpongeBob. Nickelodeon and other studios need to push for more original styles like this otherwise they will lose their audience to AI slop
>>
>>150682983
Expressive animation is basically AI-proof, you see AI replicating stiff shows like Rick & Morty and Family Guy but when it tries to replicate NuBob it looks off cause those expressions require creativity to be drawn.
>>
>>150679186
>>150679257
It has an AI interpolated look to me, like it's not completely AI generated but they're using AI to generate more frames. The fine movements just don't look natural.
>>
>>150684376
>it has an AI interpolated look to me
Curious what you think you’re seeing. Scrub through the animation, every single frame is completely original and is too refined to be any form of modern AI. You’re just not used to seeing this level of quality in cartoony CG animation and have been seeing Sora crap online. This does not have AI on any frame

I've got a CGI question that I'm not sure if /co/ will be able to answer, about the way mouths are animated.

So the original Toy Story, one of the first huge mainstream CGI projects, used NURBs. Whatever that means. But it cause some weird creases near the sides of characters' mouths. Then they used something else for 2 and 3, but idk what.

Has a 3rd revolutionary thing come out that allows for mouths to be shown at multiple different angles like OP's video? Idk how to explain it, but it looks to me like they have to create an entire new model for some of the goofier poses, and the mouth movements themselves glide around their faces so smoothly.

As someone who absolutely hates what Spiderverse has done to the animation industry, making people think "the less frames it has the better it looks!" I really appreciate the actual attempt to streamline this. It almost looks like Claymation style at times.
This was a very pleasant surprise to see, genuinely funny and creative too.
>>
>>150685587
Everyone moved onto doing basic triangle models like video games do after NURBs because it works good with skeleton rigs to animate things with. Not much has actually changed with how those models are made over the years other than people creating better tools for it.
>>
>>150686221
I get what you're saying, but it kinda does look better. Like, they have more time and money for visuals by doing that.

The first Spiderverse never looked bad to me, since it was entirely built around that animation style, and that style is a good one to follow, if you actually do it right.
My issue with it is how everyone else took the absolute bare minimum to emulate that style, just constant frame cutting and making things look so fucking cheap, no actual attempt to make movement and such flow well, like it was literally all down to cutting frames of animation and nothing else.
This comes across like the people behind the scenes actually took care and attention to everything, which is something I haven't seen Since the first Spiderverse movie.
Everything else comes across as an extremely poor attempt to emulate what Spiderverse did, just flashy colors and shittier animation, like what Puss in Boots 2 or the The Mitchells vs Machines tried, making them both just absolute shit to completely avoid entirely.
>>
>>150686374
Listen, with SpongeBob, “old good new bad” is an unironically fair take with no elaboration needed. I would hate this scene if it was done after the movie, but because it’s in the movie, I like it unconditionally.
>>
>>150686480
I agree, this short is better than the spider-verse copycats. At least this has its own look for the characters and world. It looks like little toys in a model set rather than stiff CG or cel shaded Barbie dolls

I'm really, really sorry to tell you this, but fewer frames generally does look better. CG animating on 2s and 3s has been a net positive for the animation industry.
>>
>>150691987
stylized 2D looks better when done correctly, shit like the Smurfs and that upcoming Cat in the Hat movie are clearly just adding some kind of cel shading thing for cost cutting purposes.

>>150679076
It was done in Blender by great internet animators so of course it’s good. But don’t expect to get movies and shows looking like this for long, too expensive. At best we get a CGI short from this team once a year.
>>
>>150691987
me when i lie
>>
>>150679090
The issue is that many TV budget productions give animators super tight deadlines and not enough time to make their work look good. This short must've been in production for quite a bit since Tom Kenny sounds slightly younger here.

>>
>>150693777
Don't tons of Maya controls allow for varied mouth movements? Tons of Kevin Temmer videos show this.
>>
>>150693777
A lot of the time it's deforming character models but, in at least a few cases (FOP A New Wish, Sponge on the Run at least for SpongeBob), the character models are comprised of separate meshes (e.g. legs are a separate mesh from the torse and eyes are separate mesh from the head shape) which allows for face and body parts to be swapped or duplicated if needed.

>>150684376
AI interpolating for 3d would be silly. Usually its on default in 3d animations and you have to put some effort into making it follow certain frame rate.
>>
>>150691987
shut up ngiger ive heard this atleast 50 times and it does NOT look good.
>>
>>150691987
what looks really bad is when the animation gets choppy and then smooths out whenever it can, it looks shitty and is also jarring, it's unpleasant to watch because of it.

>>
>>150686374
This scene being used as some weird gotcha is strange to me when I consider "new Spongebob" to be something that started with the first movie and progressively got worse with each following season. Even as a kid I categorized "movie and season 4 Spongebob" as the same "style".
>>
>>150694018
>>150693777
What you're thInkng of is Phonames. In my 3D animation course at uni we had to add mouth animation and in Maya you can deform the mouth shapes in advance for all the necessary vowel shapes the mouth makes and save each one to be recycled for each vowel. It makes it way easier and less time consuming because you don't have to model each mouth shapes every time.

The movie was undoubtedly the beginning of the post-movie style. The difference was that it used the post-movie style with actual humor, effort and some semblance of taste behind it. After the movie, they used the same style and kept a lot of the same ideas and habits, but were also extremely lazy and tasteless with those ideas.

The biggest example is the "horror comedy" style of the grandma scene. That was extremely post-movie coded.

Spongeboomers are cringe but Spongecucks who treat the newer seasons like they’re the best thing ever and better than the classic seasons are on the opposite side of the autism spectrum.

Most people online I’ve seen who watch NuBob agree that it’s not perfect and that it will never reach the quality of the golden age seasons, it’s not terrible but it’s not really great either, the episodes are just hit or miss IMO.
