I like Doom. Doom is fun. But you often see a lot of his glazers (both writers and fans) forget that the guy is still a dictator, and inadvertently fall into the "benevolent tyrant" mindset. And unlike Magneto, his beliefs are rarely challenged nor his redemption attempts stick for longer than a simple run.How would you handle the character?
Byrne and Hickman think they are smart people but are not, therefore a charcter who says he is, will be assumed to be telling the truth.Reed Richard is always in the spotlight, so we see him and his failings. Doom gets blank slate self-insert treatment.
>>150692145i'd show the latverian army raping civilians and doom pardoning the rapists. anyone who tries and say doom should win in the future would then have to defend rape. have doom specifically pardon and promote a military commander for raping a teacher infront of a room full of children because it shows "tactful assertion of fear and power in battle" or something.
>>150692145I mean, he did cry on 9/11...
>>150692145Triumph and Torment is great.
>>150693357He has a lot of good stories. The thing is how many fall for the "he's actually le good guy" meme, and how he's reached batwank levels.
>>150693447Yeah, there's nothing wrong with making Doom a capable, morally complex badass; he's been that since the Lee-Kirby days. The problem comes when you give him god mode or make him some misunderstood hero. While there is some appeal in the idea of a genuinely heroic Doom, that should probably be relegated to alternate continuities.
>>150693447That's what happens when a property is around too long. Every decade it's out of its original setting, it's subject to the times. That's why it's better to come up with original works that suit the time they're made in.
>>150692145>How would you handle the character? His weakness is supposed to be similar to Lex Luthors, as in he's intelligent but very boastful man who thinks everyone else is beneath him.
Doom 2099 was pretty cool.
>>150692145Is Latveria a good country to live in if you're a normal human in Earth-616? Is it in any way shielded from the daily doomsday scenario that kills millions everytime a cosmic god gets bored?
>>150693805I don't have it handy, but there's a panel where Doom- thinking, so he's not proving anything to anyone- muses that he loves and takes care of his people, because that's what one does with tools... but that he would also sacrifice them all to a painful death in an instant if it meant he got what he wanted, because that's what one does with tools.
Secret Wars pretty much spelled it out: after killing the Beyonders, Doom could have fixed the multiverse at literally any point, as Reed proved later, but what does ol' Big Dick Vic do instead? He creates a patchwork world where versions of everyone who ever slighted him are forced to fight each other endlessly to punish them for their 616 counterparts' actions, unpersons RICHAAAARDS, fucks his wife, turns his best friend into a wall and his brother-in-law into the sun, and spends eight years straight using Battleworld to feed his ego. Deep down he's just a petty little bitch.
>>150693857It's why Illuminated Comics Secret Wars has a much more effective and harder hitting ending despite being a parody.
>>150693913Where can I read those?
Who is presenting him as a hero?I keep seeing this argument made but I never see the passionate defense for Doom that the critics allege is commonplace. In the comics his last 2 decades of story arcs (to my recollection) were:1. Doom tricks the world into thinking he's a hero but he actually enslaved his own people and fed off their torment.2. He encounters a good Doom in an alternate reality and decides to nuke the entire dimension into oblivion because Good Doom was friends with Reed.3. He invites the F4 to a wedding and gets cucked by Johnny or something... I refuse to read Slott comics.4. He reinvents reality where he is God but loses it all because Miles gave a cheeseburger to Molecule Man.5. He was humbled by Conan.6. He was Shuri.7. He skinned his first love and made a flesh suit out of her.8. He revealed a secret master that tought him everything he knows.9. Legions of Doom were culled by the Council of Reeds.10. Pretty sure he was lobotomized for a bit?11. Outsmarted and humbled by power couple Storm and Black Panther.12. Appeared benevolent taking in Atlantean refugees... revealed to be butchering them like Dr. Frankenstein. 13. Arrested by Mighty Avengers and abandoned by his lover Morgan Le Fay.14. Beaten by Morgan Le Fay, had to beg Osborn for help.15. Tortured Asgardian refugees until Thor spanked his ass.16. Outsmarted by Wanda.17. "Died" fighting Mad Celestials.18. Begged Reed for help when the Incurions started. Reed hung up on him.19. Begged Doctor Voodoo for help when AXIS inverted Wanda.20. Tried to be a good guy as an Iron Man clone but got his ass handed to him by The Hood.21. "Killed" by Taskmaster... I think Blue Marvel rescued him from hell?So... where's the glazing? Where's the redemption arcs? Doom is officially a bad guy, and any time he tries to fool anyone into thinking he's good it's revealed he's not. He loses 99% of his fights and, as a bonus, he seems to be betrayed by every woman in his life.
>>150693960>he seems to be betrayed by every woman in his life.
>>150693944The download links are still up on the Illuminating Comics tumblr, but I don't know if they still work.

>>150692145>"Doom is above morality, and concerned only with his own goals." Written well, it makes him look much like a real tyrant. Written badly, it makes him look like a petulant child. People are still gonna be split on him either way, because someone who sees themselves as unbeholden to morals is simultaneously despicable (for their lack of empathy) and enviable (for being able to do whatever they want without feeling guilty). You're always gonna have people who want the power fantasy of being able to make their own (You)topia, but you're also always gonna have the people who point at how obviously fucked up his approach to life is.
>>150694064Something that people overlook is that authoritarians inevitably believe in their own infallibility which means even the most stupid and obvious of terrible decisions are followed without opposition and their failure blamed on scapegoats or memoryholed.
>>150692145I don't know how anyone can care so much about Marvel and DC characters other than small children. These companies will use them against you and your wishes.
>>150694064>Written well, it makes him look much like a real tyrant. Written badly, it makes him look like a petulant child. The difference between a tyrant and a petulant child is how many people with guns they control.
>>150692243Have a run where he's committing genocide against some hated Latverian minority all while spewing gaslighting excuses for his crimes and buying off American politicians to look the other way.
>>150693690>Every decade it's out of its original setting, it's subject to the times. That's why it's better to come up with original works that suit the time they're made in.Both DC and Marvel have tried this only for reactionary nerds to undo it all when they get in the industry.
>>150692243they were just following orders
>>150695332Doom stans went on seething mode after OWUD had him basically enslaving his people. "Nooo my heckin wholesome dictator wouldn't be mean to his people even though that's what every dictator does".
>>150693805Somewhat. There's stories where Latveria gets rekt but also several big events that pass it by because of his protection
>>150695448There's no Doom stans on this site, so please keep your reddit feuds out of here.
>>150692145no one other than Stan and Jack have written anything good at all with that character.
