I wish I could have liked this show. The supernatural designs were fantastic and the setting was really promising. The feel was completely there but fuck I just could not stand that little brother character. Greg just dragged everything down for me so much. And he's a core member of the cast and has so much focus. I just could not enjoy this show too much without him doing something to drag the feel down.

I think they went a little too over the top with showing how much Wirt disliked Greg cause I never really thought he did. Any of Wirt's dislike is just Wirt projecting his stepfather on Greg and anytime else Wirt is pretty chill eith him.

I think the only criticism of this show would the heavy handed way it tried to show moralise Wirt's dislike

Anon... The Unknown is no longer. Everyone there overcame their struggles and passed on thanks to Wirt and Greg. All of them are long gone as well, seeing the time period they are clearly from. Beatrice and Wirt were perfect together yes, but it was never meant to be. Let her be with her family and him with Sara. You can't force human connection just to play dolls with people, it's not good for anyone.

The Unknown still exists after Wirt & Greg leave, there are a few comics about side characters like Greg and the Woodsman's daughter. There's even a "sequel" comic where Wirt and Sara go back to the Unknown in their dreams but I didn't really care for that one. Not because of Sara but because I thought it stripped the Unknown of its mystery.

It's a few things
>Not at all irony-poisoned, this because a SERIOUS problem with 2010s cartoons where they'd actively be so self-aware every episode had some character commenting on cliches or intentionally breaking the mood
>Stuck to its aesthetic roots and genuinely celebrated them in everything from the music to visuals, creating a coherent feeling rather than a disjointed one
>Writing is realistic when appropriate and surreal when appropriate to give you that dream-like feeling of the land they're traveling through
>As a result of all of the above, is able to have real character moments that actually feel impactful because nothing about the series has done anything to undercut them, everything manages to stand on its own

I watched it for the first time in my 30s and enjoyed it a lot because it reminded me of my own childhood in some ways. Are there any series that is similar to feel but more importantly, quality, to OtgW?
>>
>>150713506
Same boat and age as you, I watched it earlier today.
Pretty cozy, particularly episode 9 which I feel has this almost universal appeal to anyone over the age of 13. It plays out a little too much like a fairytale, in that the villain and to me the story is resolved in a rather anticlimactic way although everything is sort of a rug pull in a lot of ways.
It does the 'le everything was a dream' thing, which was pretty corny. Didn't ruin the show overall and it's pretty much up to your interpretation if everything was or wasn't real.
It kind of sits between a 5/10 and an 8/10. Rubberbanding between the two. I can see why its a cult classic, I hope it never gets Moral Orel'd since I was on that bandwagon before all you faggots.

So you're just assuming the kids had a shared dream and that the frog's belly glowing was a collective hallucination? I found the "they're in purgatory" angle much more likely given the Huntsman's story.
>>
>>150701975
let that dread remind you every single person and living being has to answer those questions one day. We can waste our time freaking about it, or we can do what we want, enjoy what we can, and when the earth drags you six feet under you can go down saying you lived how you felt you must. Too many waste their lives, too many go down with regrets.
Hopefully I don't sound a like a pretentious faggot, and hopefully this eases your mind a bit.

I'm assuming it's a story made for children and that the glowing stomach on Jason Funderburker was a way to muddy the water for the observant watcher.
The Unknown is not Purgatory, it is it's own separate concept entirely and to wax lyrical about what 'it' actually is getting away from my point that by undercutting any of the tension for the inhabitants by making their existence inconsequential came off less Alice in Wonderland and more shitty 2011 creepypasta. By the end of the story, your take away is that this was Wirt's journey to become more confident and to appreciate the good that had always surrounded him, that the Unknown was window dressing for this journey of the SOVL, at least that's how I felt when all was said and done.
>>
I LOVE THIS SHOW SO MUCH ANONS

WHY ISN'T THERE MORE OF THESE TYPE OF SHOWS

It pretty clearly is purgatory or some form of the afterlife. The show strongly implies this. There's numerous references to Dante's Inferno through the whole thing.

The cat pumpkin thingy saying they'll join them soon enough, the setting clearly somewhere in the 1880s which means those are pretty much dead people and lost souls being tempted by the devil(the beast) and only move on into the afterlife once they have overcome him, and the fact that the brothers have this experience while sinking down the lake almost drowning, literally a near death experience, it's not even a theory anymore it's 100% purgatory
>>
>>150716237
Yeah exactly. No one can seriously argue anything otherwise. The dream aspect of the post show comic just implies The Unknown can be accessed through dreams. Not that it's a literal dream world.

Kind of messed up that the perfect girl for you lived ~200 years before you...
I can relate though...

You have Icons of the industry begging on their knees for projects that only go into production decades after. Hell Netflix rejected like 2 Lynch projects before he passed away, but Big Mouth got what 8 seasons?!

It's called American folklore.

Agreed, it'd be more in character to have Wirt either go palm-first straight on her nose, or else give Beatrice a double-hand cheek smoosh.

> American folklore
Does it explain, why those two keep moving FORWARD into woods after got lost? The most logical decision is returning back.
>>
>>150716657

they dont know which direction to go and are relying on the directions given by the woodsman

As i remember, they met lumberjack later, after dusk. Anyway, road to home could not lay over sea, if you just came from town. Kids were ether retarded, or something missed in film to explain that.

Seeing this thread reminded me of a very good fanfic I read a while ago- a AU where the Woodsman joins the boys on their journey. I can't link it because the site thinks its spam, its called "Guidesman AU" on AO3.
Sadly it hasn't updated for a while, despite that I still highly recommend it. It's very well written and has a similar cadence to the series.

they only realized they were lost when they reached the grist mill, which is where they got the idea to ask the woodsman for directions

True, why did this happen to me, I wanna learn magic in a not so boring way! Studying is too boring!

>you meet a girl who actually gives a fuck

>you'll never see her again after you help her
>overcoming the obstacle is what lets these souls pass on to the afterlife

OtgW truly is a modern fairy tale done right.

It's not purgatory exactly, but we do so see the graves of Quincey Endicott and Margueritte Grey in the real world.
