The Unknown is not Purgatory, it is it's own separate concept entirely and to wax lyrical about what 'it' actually is getting away from my point that by undercutting any of the tension for the inhabitants by making their existence inconsequential came off less Alice in Wonderland and more shitty 2011 creepypasta. By the end of the story, your take away is that this was Wirt's journey to become more confident and to appreciate the good that had always surrounded him, that the Unknown was window dressing for this journey of the SOVL, at least that's how I felt when all was said and done.

Seeing this thread reminded me of a very good fanfic I read a while ago- a AU where the Woodsman joins the boys on their journey. I can't link it because the site thinks its spam, its called "Guidesman AU" on AO3.Sadly it hasn't updated for a while, despite that I still highly recommend it. It's very well written and has a similar cadence to the series.
