It was still funny but it wasn’t a strong start to a season. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with a show sticking to a formula or having samey jokes but when an episode’s only real highlight is a Chris Chan reference that’s a pretty low bar.

It was about average in my opinion, got a few hearty laughs and smiles out of me but not as good as previous episodes. If Silly Samuel makes a return at the end of the season or in a later one and becomes more relevant, then this episode would be a bit better in hindsight. It feels like this is more of a character establishing episode than a one-off feature, because if we really never see Samuel again his character would be pretty boring.

Zach has enough of a cult following that anything he makes will probably garner enough support that it will be somewhat successful. That's not even to speak for the quality of the show, I enjoy it, I enjoy Vernon Chatman's work too, but people that watch Chatman's work are watching Chatman's work, they didn't just stumble upon it. It's the same with Zach, I'd wager that the vast majority of fans of this show are people that have been following Zach since he was making shorts. It's a blessing and a curse.

Something felt off about the conclusion of the episode. The B plot was the magic cure for the A plot, otherwise Silly Samuel would have just been continuously laughed at and gotten madder. The inspector said he was from the government but kept his title and department loose initially. The conclusion that he was either senile or bullshitting before just vanishing into dust (did he die or is he magical and transported in the wind?) resolved the B plot by declairing it didn't matter, which makes the resolution to the A plot look like an asspull where B is specifically written to resolve A but holds no other merit. I understand this isn't the first time that happens. While not the traditional A-B plot structure, A Silly Halloween Special and Enchanted Forest were both resolved similarly. Halloween using the established party as setup for the resolution, while Forest used Mip as the hidden conflict laced around the episode's premise that resolves itself accidentally. I'm much more ok with those because they feel less coincidentally related. I guess Gwimbly resolved its plot more alike what I'm complaining about, but I just think that one did it better. Maybe James vs the inspector is the difference, James didn't just up and say "oh well its ok, all of this is fake anyway" even if all he did was stab the CEO and leave. (the fact that a psychicpebbles co-created cartoon is Adult Swim's biggest show right now is still kind of mindblowing for oldfags like me, who've been watching his stuff from before the sleepy cabin days) tl;dr I can definitely reccomend Newgrounds. It's easy to find a familiar niche, everything you liked is still there and its still one of the best art gallery sites online, just for the scoring system alone

Honestly, this might have been the single weakest episode of the series. I got a laugh out of the Bob Chandler line, but everything else was just kinda boring and unfunny. The A Plot especially kinda sucked. I didn't find Silly Sam to be amusing in the slightest. I'm pretty disappointed. Hopefully they come back with a good one next episode.
