Was this storyline ever addressed?
>Doctor Strange (2018)
>Starts with Strange losing all the magic he has
>He goes into an interstellar roadtrip
>Learns magic from others in the galaxy
>"Magic has a cost" has been the creed since the 2016 comics I've started to read, maybe older idk not an expert
>Turns out every time he uses a spell that uses other gods, he incurs a debt for latter
>Bands of Cyttorak for a night of BDSM? You owe Cyttorak for those bondages
>Strange uses asymmetrically more than all other wizards, and never pays it back compared to it (Because he cannot)
>His debts got so bad the cosmic accountent balancing the powers had to shut it down
>Strange went and learn like two dozen new entities, and now he has account with them as well
>Strange beats the shit out of him in response
>Some confusing shit with Dommamu that explains nothing
>Next story is Galactus getting lost in the magic realm and explains nothing.
Did this ever get addressed again? Any people who still read comics around here?
>>
>Any people who still read comics around here?
Yeah, but fuck reading any Marvel comic released in a year starting with a 2. I'm not a masochist.
>>
No, because Waid left the book after the pencil down order from Marvel during Covi,d and went back to DC since Didio was no longer working there.

Why would anyone read this?
>>
>>150708287
Thanks, maybe I can receive closure then.

I remember something about Wong starting a cult of monks who would take on Strange's debt for him, sacrificing their lives

And then Strange cheating by borrowing magic from Yggdrasil
And then cheating again by giving the cost to Sentry

and then I think he died and his wife got the job and they kinda stopped talking about his deaths
>>
>was this storyline ever addressed
no
>anyone still reading comics around here
yes but nothing past the mid-2000s with very scant few exceptions

the “Magic has a price” shit is a holdover from Jason Aaron being an edgy retard and was rarely brought up before, save for during explicit “bad magic” phases like the Illuminati stuff or (I think; been a while since I read it so don’t quote me on this) the Dark Magic saga. It was never a factor prior to that because the point of Strange was cool magic shit and eldritch horrors, not sex with university students or fights with self-righteous robot armies, so making magic this give-and-take debt-based shit would have detracted from the cool magic and made the eldritch horrors too far out of his league

Frustrated rant over, maybe it might explain why this was just ignored? Strange seems to have been perpetually misused since like the 90s with very very few exceptions, it seems like nobody knows what to do with him and it keeps fucking the entire universe’s magical rules up because they were all predicated on Strange

That run had it's ups and downs.
Wong did train monks to pay his debts by suffering, but he also slowly collected his suffering and put it into the basement, until it turned into a sentient goo monster.

The down parts where that science-lover aliens came to destroy magic? How? Well who cares, they just did and act like christian caricatures of atheists shouting "for science!" unironically.

Yeah Lesson learned. I just wanted to know more about Doctor Strange since my only exposure of him was the 2000 Spider-Man cartoon where he is a guy.

>I just wanted to know more about Doctor Strange
Obligatory recommendation list attached

Also worth checking out early Defenders since he has a huge presence there, I’d recommend issues 1-40ish if you want that

Some other stories not included in the list that are worth checking out:
>Giant-Size Defenders (all of it)
>Dr. Strange: Master of the Mystic Arts (all of it; ignore the numbering here, I have yet to find a bad story and I’m 46 issues in)
>Anything written by Chris Claremont (scattered, but can be found in Marvel Team-Up, Master of the Mystic Arts, and The Defenders)
>Strange vs Dracula for the first time (Tomb of Dracula #44 -> MoM #14 -> Tomb of Dracula #45 -> MoM #15)

If you want every single appearance he’s ever had (including brief cameos), this site’s your friend:
https://cmro.travis-starnes.com/character_details.php?page=1&list_type=1&limit=30&order_listing=1&character=88

Good luck, enjoy the ride

Thank you! I should have come here in the first place.

The entire Doctor Strange recent events is a mess. Especially with the "magic come at a cost" retcon. Best just to ignore Doctor Strange and his solo books.
>>
>even wizards can't evade the taxman
>>
>>150708086
Later writers realized what should have been obvious all along: the "magic has a cost" retcon was dumb and just wasn't sustainable, so it was quietly ignored.
>>
>>150708719
No problem man, it’s the least I can do. Love the guy, glad to sperg about him to anyone else :)

>>150708851
Also this, as I said he’s kind of just been perpetually fucked since the 90s. The Oath was alright and he got to pull one (1) cool thing off in Hickman’s 2013 New Avengers, but the latter really sucks dick as a complete story and is not worth reading just for Strange’s role
>>
>>150708424
Not the first canon lore that he retcon and made a mess out of and it certainly wont be the last. Ghost Rider is actually an agent of the Christian God instead of being demon possessed and powered is a Jason Aaron retcon. Thor and the entire Mjolnir retcon is a Jason Aaron retcon. Probably a few others too but those are the only 2 I can remember at the moment.

Hes one if those characters that work as an idea and established part of the mythos that is frozen in time.

He only really has a few great stories in his half century plus existence with a few feats everyone agrees should be part of his established identity.

Most if his comics are shit but worth reading.

Really just his origin + time and torment should be his most iconic stories.
But that was fucked by the biddies and rainbow types thst run Disney.

>>150708851
BIG magic coming at a cost would work, kind of how storms whole deal has her going around undoing damage tk the weather she does when she uses her power recklessly. Or superman helping to rebuild after a fight.

A "thus will cost me something big" and a " the damage to thd astral plane will resonate fir centuries if I do this" kind of stories and dilemma should be at the heart of many of his major appearances.

That is consistent even in the MCU. The portal shit is fucking beyond retarded as fuck and broken on every level. And trivialize every ability he can use.
>>
Is Doctor Strange magic really magic, or ""just"" him using powers of super powerful Cthulhu mythos aliens?
>>
>>150709161
Do you define the Vishanti as Cthulhu mythos type gods/extradimensional aliens?
>>
>>150708320
Why not? That sounds like fun.
I've never heard of it but i'd read it if it was actually completed.
>>
>>150709911
It's not fun, though.
>>
>>150709923
How do you know?
