Which do you prefer, the Joker being evil because he's insane, or him having always been a terrible person with him being crazy just making his misdeeds different from what they otherwise might be?
Personally? I prefer the latter. Even when they can be found in the same person, maliciousness and madness are more frequently two separate problems that happen to overlap than they are directly connected.
