I think it's really funny that, if you honestly think about it, Brittany is one of Daria's closest friends. Or, obviously Jane's way at the top, and then there's a power gap. But the first person after that power gap is probably Brittany. And Jodie, I guess.

She still tries to see if Daria can see about how it's not how it was in elementary school, and people grow up and just learn to just get by and at least less of an asshole.The majority of this series is trying to teach Daria to not being so frigid with being seen as a loner just because she likes to be alone and read with her own thoughts. She needed to learn to reciprocate other's social graces. There are assholes who care more about image, and their are normal people who dress the part but don't care what you do.So long as you're not hurting anyone, there is no problem.
I like to think Brittany and Daria randomly ran into each other a few years after high school and actually did hit it off. Laughing at how dumb it was back then.
