The movie felt like it was set in the 15th century Inca Empire with SOME goofy, present day elements.
The TV show felt like it took place in a goofy present day with SOME Inca Empire elements.

And this is one of the reasons why I didn't like the show. It seriously lacked the movie's original atmosphere.
The Lilo & Stitch TV series may have had weaker animation than the movie but it more-or-less maintained the movie's atmosphere at least.
