As I've talked about before, the actual evidence for Dragon Ball characters being able to narrow their explosion radius to fairly insignificant scales is slim. But ever since that rant, explaining why they can fight without throwing around planet busting blasts every second has trumped me. Until recently.The first thing I realized was that Dragon Ball characters have super speed. Secondly, I realized that they charge blasts. Thirdly, I realized they have ki.As long as these three premises hold true, the rest follows fairly simply.First, let's give an example of what power is.Let's assume we have a generic martial artist who can channel ki as equally well into blasts as he can his punches, kicks, etc. Let's assume that it takes him 5 seconds to charge his ultimate attack, and a hundredth of a second to throw a punch.At 10,000,000 W, his ultimate blast would contain a total energy of 50,000,000 Joules. By comparison, a punch would contain the energy of just 100,000 Joules, only 1/500th what his ultimate blast contains.This same concept holds true for Dragon Ball characters. Goku punches at ultra high speeds, with charged attacks taking much longer to pull off and being portrayed as far more energetic and deadly because of that. In the manga, Goku even outright says that multipliers increase his power. Which makes sense, because if they didn't then he wouldn't get actually get any faster.In addition, if the above two examples aren't enough to convince you that power exists in Dragon Ball and is used in the same way that I'm using it, consider that the fact that blasts have charge time at all means that power exists and is used the way I'm using it.

However, this ignores that durability in Dragon Ball is based on ki, not raw durability.If Vegeta throws an attack that with an energy transfer of 100,000 W, then his opponent must respond by having their natural ki defenses negate the hit with another 100,000 W. The actual energy content of the blast does not matter, what matters is if it transfers that energy fast enough to hit the person behind the shield. This is, essentially, why being caught off guard matters so much and why a user increasing their power also increases their durability.Again, all of this is more or less spelled out. I doubt Toriyama thought it out to this extent, but the general idea of power being a hugely important factor in fights is given to us, and most everything we observe in the series fits neatly into the idea.What's this have to do with power scaling?This is likely to be the more controversial part of the rant.Since we've established that power matters more than raw energy count, this also means that "X beat Y" does not also logically lead to "X can bust what Y can bust".

Because Frieza is more powerful than most of the fighters.Why can Vegeta destroy the planet but still be one shot by a hit that only cracks the ground?
