I read somewhere the character in the movie was originally supposed to be younger, which makes sense when you think about it. Her being a tryhard goth is "normal" weird for a New York teenager in the late '80s but genuinely weird if she's younger; this is explained by her parents being so selfish; she's suffering sterotypical teenage parental alienation but because of her parents, not herself. She attaches to the Maitlands as surrogate parents, which soothes the tragedy that they died before they could have children.

In the TV show she's a pretty cheerful kid who just likes old horror movies.

Animated is the superior version of Lydia and Beetlejuice bar none. I have not seen the Broadway play so I can only assume it is a mix bag for fans. The movie version is peak goth comedy aesthetic. Winona Ryder is my queen.
