Sometimes, Pete comes up with a banger of chara design.

I couldn't get into sluggy due to the early art. When does it reach this level?

I'd say it get a few notch up around Fire and Rain.

But I'd advise to start way earlier than that anyway, almost from the very start, where they start to summon a demon to get all of the plot points that become important later

It really just skip a few comic with "my first webcomic" level of jokes.

Funny enough, I was actually working on making a 'condensed' Sluggy Freelance for a storytime, because just a straight storytime would be a shit-ton of filler, and archive binges take forever for the same reason. All the stick-figure stuff cut out, most of the Dimension of Pain stupidity, all the Harry Potter crap, and most of Oceans Unmoving get kicked to the curb. Dropped 7,000+ strips down to about 1,000.
Only obstacle I hit was the sunday strips(and any strips longer than 3-4 panels) are stored as multiple images, so they have to be manually pieced back together into a single strip. The top panels will be one image, then the middle panels will be an image each, and the bottom panels will be split between two images in most cases, but not all. Which takes a lot of time to do, because there isn't really any pre-made tools for patching images together easily beyond simple grids. Since I can't find a program that can patch them together based on a template, I'm stuck doing it one at a time.
I've got the strips themselves downloaded from the start up to about 2020-2022 or so, and have enough patched together for the first storytime(it would take about 12 or 13 storytime threads), but I got busy with other stuff and haven't gotten back to it.

I would keep the Dimension of Pain because it end up playing an essential part in the main plot, but I would post them in bulk.

I'd also keep the Harry Potter stuff, because it's still technically canon and Ocean unmoving ass well, just for the reveal of Uncle Time at the end. But even beyond that, once you read it archivally instead of as it updates, it's actually quite a fun read.

I had been planing to do a sotrytime of it here too, funnily enough, but you seem more advanced into it than I am.

I kept only the plot important bits of the Dimension of Pain. The majority of the weekend strips were just filler all building to "hey, they noticed the tear is still there". Harry Potter stuff might be technically canon, but nothing is lost by cutting it entirely. It never comes up outside of the Harry Potter side-stories. And I only kept the plot important parts of Oceans Unmoving, so you still get the reveal.
You can go ahead and storytime if you want, I'm still a long ways off from having the time to patch together the long strips to do the storytime anyways.
