https://twitter.com/tatsunoko_eng/status/1975697646141456552>new Samurai Pizza Cats comic coming soonWHO DO YOU CALL WHEN YOU WANT SOME PEPPERONI
>>150736751I know at least 3 people that are having heart attacks about this
>>150736751Is Tony Oliver somehow involved in this?
>>150736751>new Samurai Pizza Cats game being co-developed by Tatsunoko>new comic announcedWhat the fuck is going on
>>150736751Between this and the current Speed Racer book, it seems like Tatsunoko is trying to loosen up again on letting the US adapt their shows.
>>150737074check the lower right corner of OPs pic.this kind of unexpected announcements are normal for anniversaries.
>>150737074A nostalgic piece of media getting a revival? What a novel idea!
>>150737106they should be trying to contact capcom to rerelease TvC at least. to say its underrated is a fucking understatement.
hopefully this leads to a re-release of the DVD/Blu ray.It goes for $200 on ebay
>>150737129It was a miracle that they brought it to the West in the first place.
>>150736828At first I thought you said Tommy Oliver and I was about to tell you that one way or another he isn't real anymore.
I want a new Tekkaman
>>150736751I cant wait to see what whacky mishmash of Hollywood industry and anime industry jokes they will come up with.
>>150737944Depressin'-atin...
>>150737074Same thing the industry as a whole has been doing for the longest: it’s easy to bank off nostalgia instead of doing something original
Turtles crossover when?
>>150736751I think Sezuka hates pepperoni
>>150736751
>>150736751Aw this is cool.
>>150736751Was this show actually any good or is it the nostalgia goggles talking?
>>150736751Where's the fucking game, this is cool but that was announced ages ago with no news.>>150741653It's hilarious, better as an adult. Definitely holds up better than 80s TMNT and I'm not bullshitting.
>>150737074The world is healing.
>>150741720Eh, no, got announced earlier this year?
>>150743175Nope
>American talent>called a manga
>>150736751i know that you guys lost the entirety of the script like a bunch of retarded monkeys but what is the original plot about?
>>150741653>Was this show actually any goodYes. Most of the jokes still land, and some of them land even harder. The VA performances are a class of character acting that simply doesn't exist anymore. The original JP show's emotional intent still shines through in some places—particularly Bad Bird's romance/redemption arc—and the aesthetic is charming as fuck. Everything about the show is entrenched in the culture and aesthetics of late 80s/early 90s humor and animation, in equal parts Eastern and Western. If you grew up watching cartoons around that time, the jokes, voice actors, and Shuki Levy score will send you right back like a fucking time machine. My only real criticisms are the occasional censorship and the fact that the English scripts were clearly written hastily by serparate writers who didn't always share notes, as sometimes continuity is lost. That and the forced romance between Speedy and Polly at the last minute. It's once instance where the dub actually un-does a joke from the original—in the JP version he has something important to ask Polly the whole episode, and it turns out he just wants to borrow some money or something. It's unironically one of my favorite anime of all time. I rewatch it every few years. Francine is my waifu.>>150737074>new Samurai Pizza Cats game being co-developed by TatsunokoThe thing that blows me away about them getting the original English voice actors back is how GOOD they all sound. These guys were all Canadian VA veterans back when the show was first dubbed, but they still sound great. Compare to the Simpsons cast who has been on the air for about as long, and all sound ready for the grave.
I've never watched the show, but the idea of dubbing a show without knowing anything about what the original was about is very funny
>>150736766Good heart attack or bad heart attack
>>150745604>the idea of dubbing a show without knowing anything about what the original was about is very funnyThat point is always exagerrated. I've watched the original subtitled "Kyatto Ninden Teyandee", and a lot of the Japanese plot points are kept, and even some of the joke—they're just reframed or "westernized". I think what's true is that the original scripts were poorly translated and/or incomplete, but based on some of the similarities, the western writers definitely had some form of script to work with.
>>150745586Dean Hagopean (Big Cheese) is pushing, what, 90? And yet he sounds like he hasn't aged a day since the original dub. The guy's just that good.
>>150736828Why would Lupin be involved in this?>>150746015Yeah it's genuinely impressive. Off the top of my head, the only major cast member who's died was Michael O'Reilly, who did Bad Bird, which kinda sucks because he's my favorite character. But I bet they can get a decent impersonator since like 80% of the voice was just trying to sound like a talking chicken, lol.Walter Massey, who did Guru Lou, is also most certainly dead, and his voice is fairly inimitable. He's one of those actors that you'd recognize in a second if you watched any Canadian cartoons or anime dubs from the 80s as a kid.
>>150746756Tony Oliver was one of the writers of Samurai Pizza Cats.
>>150737106Tatsunoko is still pretty protective over some aspects though. They let Speed Racer's team have more free reign, while Gatchaman's comic writers are only allowed to build within the 1972 show (despite how some things they're doing don't quite fit already).SPC will be an original graphic novel from what I heard, not a full ongoing series.
>>150745654Yeah, Oliver said that Tatsunoko gave them scripts that /m/ would call crabstick-level. Very confusing English and unclear. Justin Sevakis claims Tatsunoko's English scripts were why the Teyandee subs were inaccurate too, but that's either bunk or they got a revised translation later. It was a similar story for Battle of the Planets back in the day.>Tatsunoko had someone go through the effort to translate and provide basic localization scripts for USA licensors>Their understanding of English was very old fashioned and the scripts had silly old slang like "milksop" in there>Jameson Brewer decided they wouldn't use any of those scripts and would just watch episodes in Japanese and come up with a script based on what they think was going on
>>150747029That's explains a lot. People tend to put the blame on the dubbers but getting a shit translated script from Japan also is a factor.
>>150747124In BOTP's case, Tatsunoko would also send their reels in a randomized order, just taking whatever boxes they had and sending that batch. The dubbers translated the episodes as they came, so the BOTP viewing order is actually different from Gatchaman and the scripts reflect that.Only reason 20 episodes didn't make it in wasn't due to any specific censorship on that part but because Sandy Frank decided 85 was enough, and the last batch of reels just happened to have a few really pivotal episodes within them that probably would've been censored to hell if they did get adapted.
>>150736751>>>/a/I don't care if the cancerous English dub was done by Americans. It's not /co/.>Samurai Pizza CatsWe're still calling Cat Ninja Legend Teyandee by that retarded name? This isn't the 90s anymore, nostalgia dubfaggots
>>150747124The fansub of the series exist. There is no excuse why Saban couldn't hire a Japanese translation.
>>150736766>Americanizing a Japanese IPYeah I don't blame them.
>>150747193This is a comic made in America by US talent.
>>150747232That anon might be the same guy that yelled at people for having Toonami threads in the past or for thinking that Speed Racer, Pizza Cats, and G-Force were valid for inclusion.
>>150746015Stupid millennials really like their shitty dubs, eh?Dubfaggots
>>150746926Oh wow, I had no idea. I must have seen his name in the credits and just blocked it out every time. I'll never forget Hogan the Wondercat, though.>>150747029>just watch episodes in Japanese and come up with a script based on what they think was going onThis is a pretty GOAT way to do localization, honestly. Purists will balk, but it results in a more entertaining product, every time. I love watching an anime dub with subtitles on so I can see the differences in real time. Pioneer's Lupin III dub is an excellent example.>>150747124Doing a good dub just takes a lot of hard work, and EVERYONE has to give a shit, otherwise it falls apart. That sounds like a no-brainer, but dubbing studios—especially nowadays—are really just looking to churn shit out as fast as possible so they can move on to the next thing. Back in the 80s, when dubbing was less common, you were more likely to see a concerted effort to make something memorable. That doesn't happen anymore because the western world now understands how utterly disposable 99% of anime (and entertainment in general) is, and it's about quantity over quality.
>>150747232Bruh this is just Cat Ninja Legend Teyandee with an Americanize title. You're not fooling anyone.
>>150747250Feels like /co/ being /co/. Probably also seething because this thread has more genuine discussion and enjoyment than 99% of the threads on this board, so of course it needs to be torn down.
>>150747250No-one watches your cancerous English dubs, nostalgia faggot
>>150747338>>150747291>>150747193>>150747252Meds, laxatives.
>>150747272>Doing a good dub just takes a lot of hard work, and EVERYONE has to give a shit, otherwise it falls apart.off topic, but one of my favorite dubs of all time is Nadia: Secret of Blue Water, because everyone gave a shit. All the main cast members are great, most of them being from the same theater troupe, so they had experience working together.Honestly, that's a shortcut to making a good dub. To hell with all these dedicated career dub VAs who expend all their effort trying to match the specific tone and delivery of the original JP VA; just get weird theater people and let them chew the scenery. Anime is best when everything is overacted.
>>150736751This art is off-model, but in a good way. Like, look at that absolute chad Guido.
Apparenrtly this was announced a month ago.https://www.comicsbeat.com/exclusive-samurai-pizza-cats-returns-in-a-new-manga/
>>150748608They really should have called it a "comic" instead of a manga, if only because the show referred to itself as a "cartoon". That said, if they really lean into the manga vibe and do a lot of meta-humor based on that angle, that could be really fun.
>>150748770Looks like its one of those "American mangas" like Tokyopop used to do.
>>150748790I'm fine with that. The thing about SPC is that putting them in any new medium really just gives them new joke material and a different kind of fourth wall to break. I want to see them do silly shit like break open the manga panels, or flip the colors on and off, and make jokes about the fact that the manga is in color because otherwise Speedy and Guido couldn't tell each other apart.
>>150748870>And lo, because we're running out of pages, Speedy decides to unleash his trademark Cat's Eye Slash! And just in time, too!
>>150748890Lol, I read it in the voice. I wonder how hard it would be for them to literally have Speedy cut a page in half, so that part of it is missing from the book. Probably too hard to do in mass production, but it would be funny as fuck.
