How are the 2000's internet references in Smiling Friends any difference from the shitty 80's references in shows like Family Guy.

My issue with Family Guy isn't the fact it makes references. I liked the original seasons which made a lot more 80s references than the more modern episodes.A lot of idiots think REFERENCE BAD because they heard someone else have that take but lack any context or nuance to what's actually being criticized. Same with Cutaways.

Relying on referencing is weak. But the biggest difference is if you're referencing stuff from the 80's you're going to be reverencing the most popular things from that time. If you're referencing something from the 2000's internet it is automatically niche because a good amount of your viewers may have never seen whatever you're referencing for various reasons. Smiling Friends has a lot of internet referencing since the creators are from early day Newgrounds so it's a good nod to anyone who was around during that time. Plus, that doll scene or Mr. Boss quoting CWC's dad works even without getting the references while Family Guy is just going "Remember the 80's?"
