Shrek 2 definitely marks the point where Dreamworks went full Happy Madison. It was completely different to Antz and Shrek 1.
For me, Shrek 2 represents the exact moment in which CG animation lost its innocence. What i like about early CG films is how innocent and sweet they were ( Toy Story films, Bug's Life, Shrek, Monsters Inc, Jimmy Neutron, Ice Age and Nemo ) and then Shrek 2 premiered and put an end to that. It was bawdy, edgy, cynical and full of inappropiate content and product placement. It's honestly sad how there was a time in which it was the highest grossing animation film ever. Say all what you want about films like Toy Story 3 and Frozen, but i'd rather live in a world in which those are the most successful animated films instead of fucking Shrek 2.
Honestly, Shrek 2 tries too hard to be adult. At one point they have Fairy Godmother drop a bottle of lust in the love potion, and right after she mentions the movie Pretty Woman simply because the writers thought it'd be edgy to mention a movie starring a prostitute.
Fantastic script full of heart. Shame that none of them, except for Stillman, ever came back. Stillman did return to write Shrek 2, but judging by that movie and Planet 51, it's clear that he reached the conclusion that Shrek 1 was successful because of the references.

Shark Tale and Madagascar would've been better received if they hadn't come out after Shrek 2. Dreamworks made such a henious, cynical and despicable piece of ironic revisionist pop culture schlock, which the whole world unfortunately saw in May 2004, that critics instantly turned against them for a few years. It took a while for them to warm up to Dreamworks again. I don't blame them. Shrek 2 was culture decay.

>>150799605Shreck 2 is good, the problem is all the shitty movies trying to be Shreck 2 that came out after it
Reminder that, regardless of Sharktale's existence, Shrek 2 is still a shit movie.
>>150801118Rotten tomatoes isn't a respectable source for anything
>>150801074Outside of some impressive CG for the time and a few funny moments, i can't think of any reedeming qualities for Shrek 2. It's juvenile, ironic and crass pop culture garbage made by cynical people and stockholders, aimed at simpletons. The sooner we drop this idiotic meme and accept we wasted our time watching shallow trash, the better.

>Shrek 2 was the original movie on steroids, with thrice the amount of pop culture references and without half the heart>It nearly grossed 1 billion worldwide and became the highest grossing animated film of all timeShrek 2 was culture decay.

>>150799605How to Train your Dragon is when Dreamworks escaped their reputation as "The Shrek company." And when you compare Madagascar 3 with the previous movie it's clear that there was a massive shift at the company. They were relying less and less on sarcasm and pop culture parodies and were instead doing big set pieces and the earnest character-driven storytelling that made Shrek stand out, regardless of the humor style.
