This was the last time DC actuallytried something innovative with its books. Why did it fail?
>>
>>150846076
Because people just want slop
>>
>>150846076
>>150846104
We're talking about the Direct Market
We're talking about an industry whose longevity rests on its consumers being from a country with an illiteracy problem who have to order overpriced pamphlets of paper.
To add onto this, said pamphlets are sold in niche specialty shops that may or may not even be near them, may or may not even stock what you want and amongst those who do purchase said wares are either speculators who treat the pamphlets more as some foolish investment or some aging jackass who's afraid to venture past their comfort zone of evergreen characters over half a century old.
And to top it off, a mere 15k to 20k is considered the line of cancellation for the two biggest publishers and it's much less for anyone else.
>>
>>150846076
Combine a 3.99 price tag for something that doesn't have anything close to a complete story, and has ads. Floppies are even more expensive now, it's hard to believe they are still being made.
>>
>>150846212
Floppies are what cover the production costs, dumdum
>>
>>150846230
And that's part of the reason that the industry is so fucked. Who wants to spend 5 or 6 bucks at this point for what amounts to a single chapter of an ongoing story, with ads? It pretty much ensures that anything that isn't an already a huge title with big fan base is just going to end up in the churn. I actually bought the first chunk of Young Animal books in floppy form (it was the last time I was even slightly interested in collecting anything) and while I enjoyed the books, they weren't a good deal.
>>
>>150846076
They sucked. It was Vertigo for tumblrtards.
>>
>>150846247
Plenty of people do just that every week/month.
>WELL I DON’T AND I DON’T LIKE IT
So just buy trades then, you whiny bitch.
>>
>>150846296
>Plenty of people do just that every week/month
Lol, less and less all the time, and that's besides the point. OP asked why young animal failed. This is why. The system cannot support more than a handful of big ticket titles and anything interesting or creative ends up in the churn. I find it weird that you'd simp so hard for a system that is so completely fucked.
>>
>>150846247
>>150846181
By the way, what's keeping American comics from switching to a tankobon-based model?
>>
>>150846252
If Vertigo had started today, you'd claim it was for Redditors and Tumblr-tards.
>>
>>150846466
Lack of an army of galley-slave "assistants" willing to work for starvation wages.
>>
>>150846340
>OP asked why young animal failed. This is why.

No, you dumb cunt, it didn’t. Young Animal died because it was late attempt to revive interest in Vertigo when Vertigo was already on its last legs and people didn’t care about its books anymore when they were just okay.
>>
>>150846466
The fact that people don’t want to buy anthologies. They’re not particularly good sellers and people don’t talk about them when they are published. DC has done them repeatedly and they don’t stir any real interest.
>>
>>150846567
The problem with the anthologies published by DC is that they're usually themed and full of one-offs. The tankobon style works because it boils down to "Well, I was gonna buy Batman anyway but now I have these other 6 Gotham comics with them, might as well read those too." with the expectation that people are going to buy the trade anyway and if they end up liking any of those other Gotham comics they'll buy those trades too.
Though I get it, it's a speculative kind of thing and they're already on their last legs and don't have the leeway to make a move like that.
>>
>>150846466
I think would be better to release
>Action Comics
>Detective comics
>Sensation comics
>Adventure comics
As Shonen Jump type , put with the Batman/Wonder Woman/Superman side stories of unknown heroes that then Will be sold as TBP and the ones most sold can continue or can get an ongoing.
>>
>>150846567
>>150846589
I wasn't thinking of them doing anthologies first.

Different manga series already come to America already packed in their own little book-store compatible volumes.

Just put out the content of 4 single issues in one volume in the same format in like every four months.
>>
>>150846611
They have done this type of stuff before. It doesn’t move any more product
>>
>>150846687
Marvel and DC have both tried original graphic novels and they don’t do that much business so again, it’s been tried, doesn’t make comics sell better, wanking off to Japan just because it’s different isn’t a solution. You don’t understand anything about how the US market works.

Why would anyone interested in actual storytelling drive 40 minutes out of their way every third Wednesday to pick up the newest chapter for six dollars plus tip?
Only a stupid, worthless individual takes time out of their day to buy a floppy. Hence why now it’s all just variant cover autism collecting as way to hopefully maybe snag a comic that will be worth $20 in seventy years.
for what it’s worth, Black Label’s Fellspyre Last God stuff was spectacular.
>>
>>150846076
There’s multiple factors but the main reason it failed was because Gerard Way kinda gave up on it. Around the same time was when they announced The Umbrella Academy on Netflix so that became his priority. Also after Milk War all the books lost momentum and couldn’t recover
>>
mother panic kino
sexo diana milkies
>>
>>150846076
Good things never sell
>>
>>150846076
It wasn't good. The Sandman Universe Presents was better.
>>
>>150846296
That doesn't actually address any of the points he made.
>>
>>150846076
cave carson was the worst one, his second volume was underwhelming, shade was just plain OK. Mother Panic the most well done.
>>
>>150846498
Well that's accurate. Have you seen Dark Horse's Berger Books line? Wouldn't pay money for any of this trash https://www.darkhorse.com/Search/Berger
>>
Got me into Forager, for that I'm thankful
>>
>>150846076
No one like pretentious arthouse garbage.
>>
>>150846687
Because the manga industry is already propped up by their domestic audience
We dont matter to the longevity of a manga series period
>>
How the fuck did they nab that name anyways? Young Animal is the name of the seinen magazine Berserk ran in.
>>
>>150846076
Maybe that attempt should've been good.
All of these stories were garbage.
>>
>>150846698
>it’s been tried
Poorly. Earth One would take way too fucking long to release anything. It failed on DC's part. Not the readers.
>>
>>150848802
Shit was organized by a white chick. Expecting anything cool and masculine is foolish.
>>
>>150849820
She organized plenty of cool shit at DC/Vertigo.
>>
>>150849888
Don't expect outrage tourists to know that.
>>
>>150846076
The books sucked and were pretty boring
>>
>>150849626
Because producing an entire graphic novel takes time and you aren’t paid for every month you’re working on it, dummy
>>
>>150850010
Graphic novel volumes shorter than the average manga volume that are made of chapters produced weekly to monthly basis.
>>
>>150846691
They didn't try hard enough.
>>
>>150846076
What's the best comic from this imprint?
>>
>>150851519
Shade The Changing Girl, but Shade The Changing Woman was disappointing.
>>
>>150850245
Graphic novel volumes that are more detailed and worked on than your average weekly manga that uses tons of empty space and blacks.
>>
>>150851577
Agreed.
I read Changling Girl and liked it so much I went out and bought the collected version of both Girl and Woman, but man Changling Woman was a let down.

Art was still excellent though.
>>
>>150851731
The colorist is a separate job. The answer should be to go for less realism then. It looks uncanny & stiff anyway. None of the stories so grounded in the real world they needed to be strictly realistic either.
>>
>>150848802
This is the real issue with comics. Even with complete artistic freedom western writers and artists still make formulaic woke garbage
>>150849888
>>150849901
She had better writers and artists to work with and people or surroundings can change. Leading to a decline in ones work as we see with Berger. Gotta get those naval gazing lefty fags away from comics if you want them to be good again
>>
>>150851577
Oh, okay.
>>
>>150846466
Spoiled artists who demand only the finest paper stick for their artwork
>>
>>150848802
Yikes.
>>
>>150851577
Alright, I'll give it a try.
>>150853167
Fuck outta here.
>>
>>150846076
They assumed they could replace talent with diversity, which is cheaper if you think about it. For a while.

But then comics get incredibly gay and you get ungodly outbursts from creators like with the red hood/charlie kirk debacle. Notice none of the "old guard" in comics ever said anything that outrageous, even though they were all lefties and comics were majority liberal, they never felt like they had license to just be openly mentally ill and publicly jump head-first into controversy.
>>
>>150857027
>the red hood/charlie kirk debacle. Notice none of the "old guard" in comics ever said anything that outrageous
I don't know what the tranny said, but Mark Waid threw a sissy fit because that assassin missed and didn't kill Trump.
>>
>>150857120
Didn't know that. I hope someone at least whispered in his ear to cut it out because when I see outbursts like that, I lose confidence that their politics will not leak over into their work in the cringiest of ways.

In my opinion hitting the reader over the head with your particular politics is like that "The writer's barely disguised fetish" meme. It is ALWAYS cringy.

Waid is an autist with little self-control, his employers have just accepted that this is how he is.
>>
>>150857677
Besides Mark Waid being a sperg, has he written anything truly cringe & retarded based on politics on the level of Chuck Wendig, Jason Aaron, or Tom Taylor? I just remember finding his Daredevil run really lame.
>>
>>150859915
He's just a lame guy that writes lame, but serviceable comics.

I don't mind if people smoke pot but it was weird to see superheroes smoking so much of it in Cave Carson.

I have never heard of any of these books and that is probably the reason.

Champions was a massive embarrassment but in the years since he's simmered down.
>>
>>150864081
So really is just a generally lame writer. I think part of it is trying to be more relatable to the younger generations but obviously failing to do so.
>>
>>150864804
He's okay when he's sticking to his wheelhouse of superheroes versus supervillains. He's disastrous when it comes to writing child characters, yes.
>>
>>150864081
Awful
>>
>>150864081
>>150867242
The weird thing about Champions is that I've actually seen zoomer nostalgia for it
Bare in mind this is the same group of people who have no love for the New 52
>>
>>150846076
people dont want new. or things aimed at younger audiences. the people who buy floppies are 45 year old men who obly buy to complete their run or speculate on variants
>>
>>150867821
Catering to younger audiences is fine. But floppies don't & stepping on old characters to do it doesn't attract them either.
>>
>>150867361
That's suspect.
>>
>>150867361
It's feigning nostalgia because they're "diverse".
>>
>>150867361
Marveldrones will eventually love anything with the Marvel logo on it. Put it on a turd and they'll eat it up.
>>
>>150872072
This is the same group that despises the current status quo for Kamala
>>
>>150872304
But everyone hates forcing her into the X-men.
