Is it true the characters from lackadaisy aren’t anthro cats but humans who are depicted as anthropomorphic cats as a style choice?
>>
>>150882458
They're all huge dicks depicted as cats
>>

IIRC according to Tracy they are meant to be cats, but she wanted to tell a story that was believable enough that you can imagine humans in their place (also why the characters never mention anything about "paws" "claws" "tails" etc)
>>
Technically yeah, kinda, but it's just the author's way of coping about the fact that it's a furry comic and she doesn't really want to cater to them.
>>
>>150882804
>it's a furry comic and she doesn't really want to cater to them.
She also did this.

Funny because the show has cat gags, like growling/purring sound effects and fur/tails puffing up.
>>150882804
I'm almost positive Travy's been to anthro cons
>>
>>150883450
IIRC those gags were done because animating is different than making a comic. I’m trying to dig the interview where it’s said the characters are human but we see them as cats as a stylistic choice, as in the characters see each other as human.

>>150882804
>>150883710
why would you have such a character design theme just to NOT leverage it at all, at the very least for expressiveness?

i could understand somewhat if the comments where about seeing characters as "people" vs seeing them as "animals," though i disagree with that premise as well. the entire history of human art has made ABUNDANTLY clear that we have no issues seeing anthropomorphic characters as (fictional) people. we were doing it before we even had written language. people who can't are the aberration, and generally have abnormally limited creativity or imaginative capability.

>>
>>150883450
The comic always had cat gags too. Iirc, in an early page, Rocky falls, turns in the air, and lands on his feet like a cat. Also the questionably canon side comics have a lot of gags like Freckle getting his nickname from one time when Rocky full body shaved him when they were kids.
>>
>>150884405
>Shit completely changed in the past 40 years
it really didn't.
what actually changed was executives (who often belong in that "abnormally uncreative" cohort) made decisions about it because THEY couldn't empathize with or comprehend characters that weren't explicitly human (or settings that were fantastical in any way). there was a culture of seeing these things as "exclusively for children" by business types mostly as a self-aggrandizing cope to explain why they couldn't understand the appeal.

couple this with the struggles of 2D animation (and the entirely technical but very hard problem of rendering fur in 3D), and studios generally preferring cheaper (at the time) live action productions, and you have a dearth of animal characters as a proportion of cultural output right as the internet begins to grow.

the early internet sort of extended that trend, but culturally i'd argue it's been moving back towards a baseline for a while. the success of stuff like Zootopia or Kung Fu Panda is ample evidence that these things are viable enough with normies to turn a profit, and so i expect we'll continue to see more in this vein. especially since animation in both 2D and 3D has better and more efficient tools than even during the height of the 2D animation golden age.
>>
>>150884250
>why would you have such a character design theme just to NOT leverage it at all, at the very least for expressiveness?
they DO leverage some of it, but they're doing what they feel comfortable with. To me, it seems like they only occasionally lean into the cat schtick (either for momentary drama or humor) but in general treat them more like humans instead of rubbing the furry aspect in your face.
I think that's part of the reason Lackadaisy has broader appeal beyond furries - if you're not a furry it doesn't feel like you're watching something perverted.
>>
>>150885057
I think they meant that the rise of furries over the last 40 years has made the concept of anthro characters hit different. It was one thing when characters could just be anthro and creepers would jack off about it in private, but now it's really hard to create anything with an anthro character and not have some fucking 'sperg respond to your posts about wanting to jack off on their paws or something. That's all well and good if you are creating your media for that community, but a lot of creators who create anthro characters don't want their work associated with that sort of degeneracy.

If furries want more anthro art, they should learn to shut the fuck up and save their spicy comments for private spaces. Publicly, just say something like "Great work! I really enjoyed this. I hope to see more". Is that so fucking hard?
>>
>>150885258
The same thing goes for any fetish, honestly. You're into feet? Fine. You do you.
You find yourself publicly commenting on instagram photos "Mmmm - nice feet. I wonder what they smell like?", then you're a fucking creep.
>>
>>150885198
anon, not even furry stuff is always "rubbing the furry aspect in your face"
the vast majority of it is art of anthropomorphic characters doing the same stuff that humans are depicted doing in non-furry art - INCLUDING fetish stuff that's not specifically related to non-human character anatomy.
4chan's idea of what "furry" means has been retarded since 2004. it's literally just "something i don't like with animals in it." Lackadaisy is absolutely a "furry" IP but you can't deny it looks good aesthetically without looking blind, so it becomes "not furry" by way of some imaginary quota of mentions about them being animal people (which, again, excludes a ton of "furry" art, including a lot of the literal pornography).
>>

It's gotten to the point that on the Bluey subreddit, the normies that go there throw a massive fit over any normal anthro fanart, thinking it's automatically sexual even if it's drawn by literal children, and then the mods have to go clean up the comments and ban the people throwing a fit over normal fanart just because it has a furry looking art style.

The normies say they remembered what happened with My Little Pony

it makes no difference, as evidenced, ironically, by this samefag with an axe to grind (>>150891787)
bluey isn't really "furry" designs at all, but post your shit "for children only" in a space with a bunch of porn (i.e. reddit, 4chan, the internet in general) and no shit you're gonna get porn of it.

acting like this is somehow different from, for example, 90%+ of all fanart of Gwen Tennyson, is disingenuous and retarded. it's just a particular obsession 4chan inherited from moot.

pearl clutching is and always has been an ultimately impotent force in the long run. we as a species are extremely horny. the US (and UK) is just heavily culturally repressed about it in a way it isn't for gore and violence. rule 34 wasn't an "i want there to be more of this" thing like rule 63 was, it was an observation of something already happening even on the proto-modern internet. there is no "safe from smut" character design, full stop.

"clussy" was originally coined by somebody talking about fucking Pennywise from It taking their virginity. NOTHING IS SAFE.

bottom line, these companies will do what sells, and talking animals sell. unrelated reddit moderators of fan spaces whining about having to do the thing they literally volunteered to do doesn't change that, and the companies don't generally care what happens in fan subreddits except occasionally using them for marketing.

I think you missed the point of that anon. People were posting extremely normal fanart, the mods also thought it was extremely normal. what you're missing there is that this isn't the sort of thing normies actually do - they're either never going to the subreddit in the first place, or simply leaving when they see something they dislike. the only people who bother to complain about stuff like that are people who already had a desire to pearl clutch (they often actively seek out things that might offend their sensibilities, there's an almost masochistic aspect to it), spend enough time online to even know what "furry art" is, and are invested enough in the bluey subreddit to complain instead of simply leave.

...did it not immediately strike you as ridiculous when that anon's example of "normie reactions" was a couple of people complaining on a small subreddit about a cartoon for children?

Lackadaisy is shit, visually the show is boring AF, all the designs are just boring cats with little variety, I fucking hate Digshithole Circus and Hazshit Hotel but to give credit where credit is due at least shows can or at least try to be visually interesting and have variety in their designs. The only people who think this garbage looks good are 14 year old Warrior Cats fangirls. It also angers me that Glitch is only focusing on loreshit with their shows, if they really wanted to show that they have variety why not greenlight a wacky cartoon? I'm tired of lore being everywhere, give me something entertaining and funny, something wacky would seem better for a marketing standpoint anyway, all their shit shows are due to end when they can just keep a wacky show going 4eva and continue to merchandise off it.

The biggest obstacle we must overcome for a second animation Renaissance to truly happen is to ditch the loreshit and go back to classics and truly understand what makes a cartoon work, that helped us during our first animation Renaissance, take influence from classic western cartoons to truly showcase the western cartoon identity, countries like Japan love when western animators make shows that look western rather than shitty action Tumblr fakime

anon, less than 10 million aussie redditors does not a "normie" cohort make.

australia's reddit use is genuinely ABnormal, and even with all these supposed aussie normies on reddit... they got a handful of complaints at most? from a subreddit with over 175k users?

so you've either got a community that normies don't go to, or a community with a bunch of normies and just a handful of complaints. there's no way to spin this into mass normie hysteria about furries no matter how invested you seem to be in that conclusion.

That's just the rep they have here because 4chan (largely performatively, but some people can't tell the difference and genuinely buy in) doesn't like them. If you want to see what a "bad reputation with normies" looks like, look at 4chan itself. I shit you not, even bronies have a better reputation with normies (and most normies these days have either forgotten about bronies or don't even know they existed, because that fandom is essentially dead).
You have to understand, the average person today has basically no idea about internet history or memes before the late 2010s.

>but Australians

Australia is something of an aberration for being excessively online, and Bluey is one of their cultural exports. Maybe there's nothing else to do there but shitpost, I've never been. It sounds like you're getting overwhelmed trying to do things "the right" way. Just draw because you like it. Do it every day. Try to emulate your heroes. Later on you might feel motivated to start booking up on stuff, but starting from books is a fantastic way to lose all motivation. Just do it because you enjoy it and learn to love the process of constantly learning/leveling up.
If you draw every day and keep track of it in a sketchbook, you'll see a huge difference one year from now.
>>
>>150894580
But what do I draw? Do I go look up some artist I like and try to copy it? I had somebody tell me once he started tracing the main outline of art he likes and then filled in the details and eventually he got used to doing that and tried to do it himself.

And 'drawing every day' is that for an hour or five? I could try and do that but if it's just drawing doodles for the sake of it without knowing actually how to draw properly to get some nice art I dunno.

I can just go and buy another sketchpad and just doodle stuff, but I want to be able to do it properly and produce decent enough stuff that I could produce a webcomic or at least think about it.

>>150889157
I recall her saying at some point when asked it's a mixture of she likes her cats which she based some of the proto characteristics of the characters on and that she finds that by drawing them as cats she finds it lets her make them more expressive as characters.

Anything that breaks the carefully researched time period or any animal like behavior she attributes to it being just something she likes (zoot suits being from a later time frame for example) or just something she thought was funny.

don't try to regiment it. practice isn't about spending a set amount of time, it's about failing at something less and less with each attempt until you're able to reliably do it without failing, then moving to the next thing. there are basic skillsets (proportions, framing, shading, etc.) you'll want to practice, and the best way to do that is by drawing stuff that uses those skills. it will look like ass until it doesn't, but that's just how it goes.
>>
>>150887358
>IIRC according to Tracy they are MEANT to be cats, but she wanted to tell a story that was BELIEVEABLE ENOUGH that you can IMAGINE humans in their place
>>
>>150895389
>you'll want to practice, and the best way to do that is by drawing stuff that uses those skills
Right but (sorry for asking questions) you said to just draw, which I can do, but the issue was I thought I had to draw 'the rules' so to speak first and when I went to look at 'the rules' there were so many, so many 'draw 10000000 boxes' and stuff like that I was given choice paralysis. If you're saying 'just go and draw something in your room or where you're sitting, who cares how shit it is' then I can do that. If there is something I should be drawing. Because like, drawing a flower pot is different to drawing a dog which is different to drawing a human.

Like if there was a guidebook that took you step by step in drawing and all that stuff then that's one thing but everything claims to be the best way. Even the shading skill practice seems to be complicated. But if you're saying like 'just go find an artist you like and try to copy them' that's also a bit different.
>>
>>150895501
i wasn't that original anon. anyway, don't worry about hitting a number. have you ever learned to play an instrument? it's like that - don't worry about playing a song for X hours or X times. you need to develop your intuition and muscle memory for things, but once you have it you have it.

>everything claims to be the best way
maybe if it's trying to sell something. nearly any artist will tell you that the best way is the one that works for you. but you'll never find out which if you don't try some for yourself - and plenty are available. nobody else can predict which things will work best for a stranger.

one thing i might suggest is drawing a few things now at the best level you can before learning anything, and then keeping those as a signpost to show how you've improved. you're not going to get any worse, but it can be easy to not notice incremental progress and get discouraged.

personally i don't recommend drawabox, the guy gets a little too up his own ass from what i remember. maybe it's better now than last i checked, IDK.

Whenever I hear stuff like this, it gives me the impression that the story itself doesn’t hold enough merit, so the creator has to use quirky animal people like jingling keys to keep the audience (furries and gooners) entertained. The people behind Bojack Horseman for instance made a new show but it’s normal words from a normal guy, not a horse guy, so no one gives a fuck about it. Basically, using anthros feels like a crutch, which is a shame since I do like anthro characters
>>
>>150894699
Draw whatever you want. If you’re super into a show or comic, try drawing the characters. Whatever it is, do something you enjoy.
The problem seems to be more that you don’t actually like drawing, but you want to be good at drawing. If you can’t love the process, you’ll never get there. Focusing on the destination is toxic.

I'll be the first to admit that if Lackadaisy wasn't about visually appealing cat people living during Prohibition and was just about regular people living during prohibition, I probably wouldn't have watched the pilot, but to say that "Humans are boring" is silly.

What i’ve often heard and agree with is that the only good case to use furries is if it plays an actual role that the characters are anthros in a way that you can’t with humans. If it’s not the case, 98% of the time it is a crutch and the show is likely shit

So just Zootopia and Beastars?

Sorry for late reply. It's not that. When I was a teenager I went and learned to draw and I remember I drew typical deviantart teenager tier manga characters and I can picture it now, going up to somebody and going "hey what do you think of this?" and then going "did you draw that?" "yeah" "No you didn't, fucking liar" and just having all the shit taken out of me. I like drawing in the idea of drawing of creating. What I hate is my lack of natural talent in it. Now you could go, like a lot of people do, there is no such thing as 'natural talent' and people just 'tap into the right side of their brain' but I've known people from 6 years old on who were good at drawing. Sure he was autistic (and even as a kid I knew he was weird) because it'd be like
>Hey class, trace this thing and move on
>No I won't trace it
>What?
>I will draw it
And guy draws it instead of tracing it. Anyway point is, the guy loved art and just 'got it'. But me? I got it as a kid and a teenager and had it shaken out of me.

Anyway, the real issue is I don't want to learn 'bad habits'. I use an example like Shadman - the guy can draw, not amazing, but he can. He could improve. Instead of improving he did edgy comics. Then you got people like Sakamichan, who was the first artist I saw getting over $1m per year on Patreon... They use so many 'cheats' to hide poor art (lens flare, shinness etc) and I don't think that will do.

I might just take your suggestion of drawing some characters I like, might find some characters or artists I like and just try and do it.

THanks for the replies I really do appreciate it, sorry I went afk to do something. I just regret giving up 'just drawing' and feel like in order to be good I need to learn proper forma nd shit.

I didn't read much of the comic, but I feel like the animation, while good, doesn't really capture the same vibe.
>>
>>150899809
The announcement was REALLY rough in comparison to the pilot. It looks like they tried the Sony animation limited frames thing and in some of the sweeping crowd shots there's repeating incidentals. That aside I think Tracy said she was aware when she decided to do this that there would need to be a change in the style.

the proper form comes from experience. Draw stuff that interests you and try to make every drawing better. If you realize something like your character proportions are always a little funny, then study anatomy (and how it relates to illustration). If you notice that angles of backgrounds or objects are always off, study perspective. If you want to get better at shading, shadows, and highlights, study light.

You can't study all of this stuff all at once, and dryly reading through books is going to be next to useless. Just draw what you want, try to make it better, and learn things along the way in pursuit of making your drawing better.

If you REALLY need more of a method, consider finding a class to sign up for. There are probably courses offered in your area that you can attend in person, but even if not, there are tons of remote classes taught over zoom these days. You could also research artists in your area and ask one for private lessons. Most artists are broke as shit, so I'm sure a lot of them would be willing to sit down with you once a week and go over stuff.

That's not confirmed. What they *actually* said in the Glitch direct thing was that in "Glitch Presents", they would be partnering creators with investors. That MAY result in exclusive deals. In other words, if they help broker a deal between a creator and Netflix, Netflix may want exclusive streaming rights as a result. That was not confirmed to be the case with Lackadaisy specifically - it was just a blanket statement to help people understand that Glitch Presents will not be the same as Glitch Productions which are funded through merch sales and released on youtube.

Thanks, I mean it. I think I'll just grab a sketchpad and some pencils and grab an artist I like or something and just try and draw that they've done. I remember years ago I was on sadpanda and somebody uploaded a artbook on drawing anatomy and stuff, completely non-porn related and I bookmarked it meaning to go through it, but never did. Might be worth trying.

As I said my ultimate goal is really to be able to draw a comic that doesn't look horrible to look at. I know that's very much like 'I'm going to fly that aircraft' when you can't even ride a bike type thing, however. People like Unsounded or Kill Six Billion Demons or OP do inspire me and as I said, make a bit jelly.

the style that Tracy used for the comics is not reasonable for animation. Those pages sometimes takes Tracy months to do. When you have to draw that 12-24 times a second, it's unreasonable to expect the same style. It's pretty common that animation will be simplified compared to the graphic novel or comic version. This is especially the case since Lackadaisy isnt' using puppets, but the animation is all done by hand with a handful of props created with CG.

>my ultimate goal is really to be able to draw a comic that doesn't look horrible to look at
maybe try to ween yourself off of /co/ for a bit. Most anons are real dickheads when it comes to talking about art and that sort of stuff can get in your head. Even more importantly, the way you talk about other artists will be the way you internally talk about yourself. If you're constantly listening to other people shit on artists (or you yourself are shitting on artists), it's going to be REALLY hard to make anything and not hear those same voices talking shit about your own work in your head. That's going to make it next to impossible to every make anything. Everyone needs to suck at something before they get any good at it, and even then, most artists are never going to stop seeing areas they need to improve on.

This doesn't mean you can't be critical, but practice being constructive. Find things you like in other people's work and instead of just saying "this sucks", maybe think "I can see what they were going for. I think if they wanted to do something like <x> it might have been helpful if they did <y>". You're still critiquing, but it's constructive and that voice will be what you hear when you're working on your own stuff.

If you want to make a comic, make a comic. It's probably going to be rough, but each one you make will be better. You're never going to get to a point where you feel like you're "ready", so just start doing the things you want and try to do better every time, and learn to shut out the haters. If you make a comic, no matter how bad it is, you're well ahead of all the people who wanted to make one but never even made it that far.
>>
>>150900062
Right but you look at Unsounded and you can't really say 'this is poorly drawn'. Like you can criticise it and say X Y Z but it's not a case of
>Man I just can't enjoy this as it looks so ass
So if I could get to the stage where I could draw my art well enough that people can get engaged in the story, that'd be a goal I'd be happy with.

Thanks for your support and advice, plus the other people who replied too.

Sexuality and romance are just normal parts of human nature. Shippers will always find a way to ship two characters together even if it makes no sense. Even if the characters don't see each other that way. Shippers always find a way to make it work. People will sexualize any kind of character and romantify any kind of relationship. I think people just naturally want to see sexual or romantic content of the characters they like.

Actually, the FAQ on the Lackadaisy website heavily implies it will be exclusive to some streaming service:
>Where will it be released?
>It’ll be an announcement we make closer to release, but we know Episode One will still drop on YouTube.
>>
>>150899135
>>150899947
NTA but I want to point out, while wanting to avoid bad habits is commendable, if you're so afraid of them you're not even starting, it's not good. Shadman might have a billion bad habits- but at least he draws. Get used to putting mark to paper- you can correct later if needed. Obviously avoid pitfalls to begin, but right now the biggest pitfall is you're being too scared to even start.

>It’ll be an announcement we make closer to release, but we know Episode One will still drop on YouTube.
Sounds to me more like they’re still working out details.

So I'm confused. Did any of the episodes that crowdfund two years ago get made? Is Glitch just finishing and distributing those? Or is this a whole new production?
>>
>>150905782
Nice upside to the show is that we'll get a lot more art of him.
>>
>>150907967
Glitch had joined forces with them to deal with the merch side of things while they worked on those crowdfunded episodes. Now they're outright helping finance those episodes so that they get to be longer etc, it seems. Adding to the crowdfund, well, funds.

I'm 35. Furries and anything in the overlapping furrydom is never going to change. It hasn't changed at all and if anything has gotten even worse.

I’m glad that it seems like they’re ditching the electroswing music. It was my one major complaint from the pilot. Everything else was so meticulously crafted to put the audience in that world, the electronic music took me right out. The teaser they recently put out felt like everything came together.

The comic and the cartoon mention some historical people and events. Everything in Lackadaisy's setting seemingly happens the same way as in our world, except that all the people are cats.
>>
>>150911761
My take is that it's loosely tied to real events. I think Tracy gets really nerdy about history and stylistic details to a point, but at the end of the day it's a fictional story. If pedantic history dorks want to nitpick, they could probably find anachronisms to complain about but they'd be missing the point.
>>
>>150911761
I swear I'm not trying to start shit but I wonder how race-based slavery happened since fur color/breeds don't seem to matter in this setting. I don't expect Tracy to have an answer for this or anything, I'm just curious.
>>
>>150912441
>I wonder how race-based slavery happened
I'm not sure that it comes up in Lackadaisy. There are some aspects of Lackadaisy that parallel real-life events, but it was never alleged to be a 1:1 replica of history. It's totally reasonable to set a story in a fictionalized prohibition setting without having to have answers for those sorts of things.
It's kind of nice to be able to eschew race issues by making all the characters cats and NOT have their fur colors indicate anything specific. It's interesting that the story doesn't suffer one iota just because you can't identify whether a cat is supposed to be black or asian or whatever. It's almost as if that sort of shit shouldn't matter in real life either...
