The spirits invaded when Vaatu (the spirit of Chaos) broke the divide between the material and spirit worlds when all the planets in the solar system aligned, which they call "Harmonic Convergence". Vaatu influenced the other spirits into chaotic versions of themselves and they invaded and forced all the Humans into isolation for 10,000 years until Wan, sealed Vaatu into a giant dead tree in the spirit world by bonding his soul with Raava (the spirit of order) and became the first Avatar during the following Harmonic Convergence. This took place 10,000 years before the events of LoK S2 because S2 is when the Harmonic Convergence after that happens.
