>>150887648Four teenaged internet friends, John, Rose, Dave and Jade, play a game called Sburb together. It triggers an apocalypse on Earth and transports them into the Incipisphere, where they must complete quests on their personal planets to create a new universe. They are talked to ('trolled') by a group of aliens from another universe - Aradia, Tavros, Sollux, Nepeta, Karkat, Kanaya, Terezi, Vriska, Equius, Gamzee, Eridan, and Feferi - who also played their version of the game that failed ("Sgrub"). These 12 trolls come from a hierarchical world divided by blood color (left to right - lowest to highest on the hemospectrum) called Alternia. Frendships form across timelines and species. The trolls' session of the game becomes entwined with the humans’ success.Sburb is not just a game but a cosmic mechanism that seeds universes and sustains a cycle of destruction and rebirth. Time travel, alternate selves, and doomed timelines are major elements. Characters like Dave must repeatedly loop through time to ensure events unfold correctly. The story introduces an alternate version of the original kids from a "post-scratch" universe, reborn with new backgrounds. This includes new characters - Jane (Nanna), Roxy (Mom), Jake (Grandpa), and Dirk (Bro) - as well as a second group of trolls ("Dancestors"), who are teenaged versions of the trolls' ancestors.Central to this plot is Lord English, a time-traveling, nearly unstoppable villain who is a fusion of several characters, but mainly Caliborn, a cherub who has a sister named Calliope he shared a body with, but they eventually grew into seperate people. The goal becomes not just to beat the game but also to defeat Lord English. The characters work across universes, timelines, and death to build a new universe and escape the game. Terezi forces John to 'retcon' her decision to kill Vriska, which works to rewrite the story and create a "perfect timeline" wherein Vriska can sacrifice herself to let her friends escape.

Was just thinking, has anyone got any examples of characters where they don't want to mind control people, but can't control their powers completely or otherwise can't get away from it?In Classic Marvel, it was a thing in the Secret Wars-related storylines where The Beyonder turns everyone on Earth into adoring slaves with his psychic powers, and quickly gets bored with it and goes into existential angst that he can't meet anyone that isn't under his control.I think that they briefly tried characterizing The Purple Man that he couldn't have a normal relationship even if he wanted to.I think Claremont spent about 5 minutes trying to characterize the New Mutants-era minor villain Empath as being a hormonal teenager that wants to stop using his mind powers on others but they get out of his control whenever he gets excited.Has there ever been a hero with that kind of problem? I like the idea of a hero with mind control or suggestion powers that wants to only use them for good, but can't help but finds that just fantasizing about things, or getting lost in his own thoughts cause other people around him to get affected. You could do a tortured hero drama with that kind of thing, or if you're into a corruption arc have it be that he gives up on keeping it under control or gets inured to the idea that he's violating others.>>150887648It's a big fractured mess with some good jokes scattered around. It starts out as a shitpost-y choose your own adventure and video game parody thing, then Hussie nixes that in favor having an idea for a more focused narrative. Then a bunch of teenagers get way too into it and Hussie's later ventures fail miserably, leading him to get stuck to continuing it.

I have great faith in the fandom I grew up with, but obviously our presence on the internet hasn't been the same since the Trump campaign and all the prior anti-hypnosis jihadism from activists taking over the web, so I assume it might be time for us to shuffle off into the wider world and form that hypno-villain league IRL.

A love spell rather than proper hypno, though beguiling beauty is a sub-type of mind control. Just watched an Extreme Ghostbusters one too where a siren is forced to use her powers to entrance victims and steal their youth to keep her sister young.
>>150894035This is Persuasion, AKA Purple Girl.
You know, the actual non-fetish response to the OP is that fictional hypnosis is so common in comics and cartoons because it's an easy to way to just make anything happen without any good writing or characterization to justify it.Most often it's just used an excuse to make two heroes fight each other or make a hero work for the villain briefly, and people with any kind of critical eye tend to not like it since it's just a cheat to go against characterization. So, what are some examples or techniques that you could use to use mind control is a story but still keep your characterizations?I think one simple way is to just make the character do stuff under control, but still have bits of them shine through. It's not much, but I'm thinking of how in Claremont stories where everyone would get hypnotized by Mesmero or Dracula or whoever they'd get commanded to do something and everyone else would say something along the lines of "yes, Master," and Nightcrawler would say "yes, mein Herr." I'm having some trouble thinking of examples, but maybe if you are just commanding to a hero to fight other heroes or do crimes for you, they still retain some quirk or signature fighting style that they use while otherwise acting robotically.I guess another way would be to turn them into an "evil" version of themselves, but not just generically bad but working some part of their character or grievances into it. Like some of the times Sue Storm gets turned into Malice she's not just working for the bad guys, but also working out her anger over Reed being a shitty husband.Any other ideas?

>>150886435Illustration requires a certain degree of tolerance for total objectification. You can't ask the clay what kind of pot it wants to be, and you can't ask ink on a page how it wants to become a person.
What would you consider to be the stages of hypnosis?
>>150913159>it's an easy to way to just make anything happen without any good writing or characterization to justify itI've long held the position that unconditional mind control can be nearly as risky to characterization as time travel is to narrative stakes. You basically lose the character for the duration at best, and at worst the mind controller can simply override any and all character conflict (and look stupid whenever they don't). You can also inadvertently break the characterization of the mind controller by proxy because they are essentially "writing" the characters they're controlling - what they command the characters to do becomes part of their own characterization. It's fun for a gimmick or something not taking itself too seriously (like fetish stuff), but it's such a risky thing to put in any setting. The more total and impossible to resist it is (which is often used just to absolve the victim of both guilt from whatever they were commanded to do and shame of not stopping themselves), the riskier it is to characterization more broadly. I think in a lot of settings unconditional mind control is not really worth it unless you're doing something like Jessica Jones (which that probably did better anyway), and the mind controller can only explicitly be an antagonist barring directions that they never seem to go because it kind of defeats the point (extremely reluctant to use it, always getting consent before even trying, etc.).This is something I really can't stand about Marvel's telepaths, for example. They're basically ALL mind rapists, but only seem to do petty stuff or 'solve' minor problems with it, and their fans don't really give a shit. Having such flagrant disregard for the concept of consent because the only victims are strawmen caricatures is a completely repulsive mindset to me.
Honestly, if you could get away with it, you wouldn't feel guilty either.
>>150912455>Kamala blackmailing a hypno villain
>>150913159>So, what are some examples or techniques that you could use to use mind control is a story but still keep your characterizations? There was a New Universe comic where the bad guy gave some heroines a suggestion that was longstanding, but they just continued on with their normal duties and adventures while being compelled to do the bad guy bidding and treating it kinda like an embarrassing sidejob. One thing that stuck out was one of their teammates made a snide remark about their "other boss" and the heroine was like "Stop that, you KNOW I can't talk about that."
>>150913749No I totally would. I'd be so fucking terrified of messing somebody else's brain up I'd probably never use it. That shit ain't what I'm about.
>>150914331>you fry someones brain to the point they can't make decisions or sleep without your command
>>150914399A more interesting possibility is if someone else does it. >Villain fries person’s brain until they need commands to survive >heroic mind controller forced to become their caretaker
>>150914543reserving it for stuff like this is part of why Martian Manhunter is sometimes described as "the only ethical telepath in comics"it's a very underexplored hero niche, IMO
>>150914331>>150914399Psychonauts 2 has this as a major theme
>>150913159>So, what are some examples or techniques that you could use to use mind control is a story but still keep your characterizations?Body piloting is fairly common. One might argue it's different from true mind control but in many cases it's simply the same thing but subverting the will and volition while leaving the consciousness intact.
>>150914297Never read these, but I've seen them mentioned and posted on these threads before. May have to track them down sometime. One thing that might kind of tie was that there was a miniseries called "Young Heroes In Love" in I think the '90s? Or at least some time when early reality tv stuff was still novel. The premise was that a bunch of young novice heroes are on some kind of "The Real World" type show, and twist was that the team leader was hiding from everyone that he had mind control powers, and was altering peoples' desires whenever they deviated from what he thought would bring in the best audience. I guess the violation of characterization idea kind of compliments it.Although kind of makes me think, what should the experience of being mind controlled be portrayed like? As in you're not just a robot but like it's an unpleasant job you have to do like in the New Universe thing could be an idea or is there something better.
