>Wah! What are we gonna do on the bed?The saga of Bloomington's (currently) most unlikable couple continues.
>>150903958Very romantic
I really feel bad for some of the only likable characters in this series having to deal with these shitheads.
>>150903958>>150904007time to eat, but who's eating first?
>>150904367Joyce is going at it with all the zeal of a convert so she'll be the one instigating everything.
It is amazing to me that we are now going on 20 years of Willis lashing out against the experiences of his childhood in comic book form. In all his comics, he's just getting mad as his parents and his church group, year after year, decade after decade. You'd think after a certain point he'd just fucking get over it.
>>150903958Unlikable is the theme of series, right down to the author
>>150904563>>150904571I really have a fascination with stuff like this, Funky Winkerbean and Foob for this reason. They're as much insights into the people who create them and their interests, idiosyncracies and hang-ups as they are stories in and of themselves. You read these comics and you're getting a story about the people creating them as much as you're getting a story about the characters. Dumbing of Age is particularly interesting to me in this regard because it seems partly born from Willis' dislike of things like Funky and thinking he's better as a creator than Batiuk, Johnston, et al but just doing similar things to what made those strips such snarkbait with the addition of an even more abrasive personality. Batiuk is basically WIllis looking into the future, they even share a similar childish obsession with nerd shit from their youths (silver age comic books or Batty, toys and Transformers for Willis) that creeps into their works and both clearly want to be seen as brave and bold for their storytellig choices.Speaking of, I've been going through and collecting each Funky strip one-by-one for the last couple of months. I'm finishing up with 2010 now so in a few weeks, probably, we'll be getting a Funky Winkerbean storytime.
Anyway, in the end I assume that Willis will wimp out on actually having Joyce and Dorothy do anything. They'll continue talking and kissing but as clothes get removed they'l get cold feet, womp womp.Or maybe we'll get something more fun like Joycemom's Bigot Sense going off causing her to race down to IU and confront her heathenspawn with a coat hanger saying something like "In this case, the term is never too late." Becky will have to save the day.
>>150903958This is the most boring shit ever. I've never seen someone drag out nothing the way Willis does.and people keep donating to him, enough to make a living off of. Fucking how?
>>150905170As far as donations, it's people who basically care about who's fucking who and also think they're making a political statement I guess.
>>150905436but still, it's something we all get for free anyway. Are these people so starved for love they'll pay monthly to live vicariously though cartoon characters?
>>150905456Most of them are autists so yes. He's got 5.4k subscribers on Patreon so even if they all only subscribe to the $1 tier that's $5400 a month. I would bet most subscribe to the $5 tier and there are also $10 and $20 tiers too so realistically Willis is raking in anywhere from $10-30k a month.
>>150905170Sunk cost fallacy, same as with QC.
>>150905759>He's got 5.4k subscribers
>>150903958Amazing. He continues to find new ways to overcompensate.
>>150905864Being successful in media is all about getting lucky and producing the right slop for the right autists at the right moment. As long as Willis keeps delivering evil parents, lesbian shipping, progressive values presented as the most correct ones, and inoffensive poorly-drawn porn he is set for life.
>>150906025Willis is just recycling soap opera reactions.Dumbing of Age is nothing but Dawson's Creek, Melrose Place, Beverly Hills 90210 and other 90s soap operas ran thru the mind of an autist that is actually super rude and incapable of socializing well himself.
>>150906089Willis has the benefit of being around a long time, It's Walky developing a devoted and autistic fanbase and Shortpacked also developing a devoted and autistic fanbase and having some relative normalfag appeal like the "I'm Batman" comics. Got in first and is consistent, same reason Jacques brings in money despite how lazy painfully dull QC is.
>>150904563Immature people never do. It's why they're immature.
>>150904519>Joyce is going at it with all the zeal of a convertdoes that mean she'll get bored of it fastest? or be the first one to fall out of love?
>>150904121joe is going to fuck them both
>>150904007why is the woman bottom in webcomics always worried they're not being gay right that they have to look it up on the internet? i never see this with gay male characters
>>150904941didn't he make a comic about his asexual autist girl having sex though? or was that a fancomic?
>>150908340If a dude wants it up the ass, then he just needs to bend over and spread cheek and the other guy just needs to stick it in. There's not a lot to look up besides where to get lube.
>>150904367Joyce will go first, but will start giggling when she sees Dorothy's vagina and can't stop thinking about all the childish names and euphemisms for women's genitals. Dorothy will try to take the lead, only to discover that Joyce is the kind of woman who is paranoid about the way her vagina smells and drowns her panties in feminine deodorant spray, which causes Dorothy to sneeze directly into Joyce's cooch.
So how long until Willis troons out?
>>150910026They/them pronouns was as much effort as he was willing to expend.
>>150908112The eventual end result is her wanting her sister's feminine penis.
>>150910137For now.until his followers demand more unless they stop donating.
I'm a fan of the TFwiki and knowing that this Dave willis is a major factor of that site sickens me
>>150911785It's good for a quick reference but digging deeper into any article is aggravating. Eventually it devolves into the mods bitching about shit and wondering what the gender is on every single character because Hasbro wasn't 100% specific.
Just going back through some of the other strips in this arc, this feels like Willis knew he'd get a bunch of backlash over his using Not-Israel and Not-Palestine as a backdrop for his Joyce and Dorothy being lesbians story (it's like Pearl Harbor) that he had to pre-emptively shit on anyone who'd criticize him for it because ultimately all he and his readers care about is jacking off.
>>150911402I've been on Team Joyce/Jocelyne for years now.
>>150904007>>150904519>>150903958realistically, didn't the one on the bottom teach the other how to masturbate? like, she'd be more equipped to actually lead their "first time" than just let it happen to her. even if they're just doing hands stuff and not mouth stuff, she seems like the more experienced one in making things work down there.
>>150904830Personally after going through decades of Funky Winkerbean in the last few years, I say that Funky Winkerbean is way better than Willis and others made it out to be even with Batiuk making questionable storytelling choices from time to time. Hell, I'd argue it's better than Dumbing of Age.>and both clearly want to be seen as brave and bold for their storytellig choices. They do and the both started out with more humorous comics
>>150908550>didn't he make a comic about his asexual autist girl having sex though?Yep made by O'l Willy himself.
>>150912791Ruined the joke with "I'm readers" should have been implied with silence.
>>150913307i agree
>>150913307Daisy is speaking for Willis, not the reader per se. Willis is the Lesrax.
>>150913129>realistically, didn't the one on the bottom teach the other how to masturbate? She taught her how to get off by sitting on washing machines.>>150913213Funky is better even at its worst but Act III where everyone is old and depressed except for Les who's old and smug is still pretty shit, especially after Les marries Cayla and Batiuk seemingly stops caring.
>>150913213Funky is absolutely better than DoA. Is it melodramatic and given to tonal whiplash? Sure. But unlike DoA the characters aren't all hateful and the pacing isn't abysmally glacial. Also Batiuk's writing isn't colored by obvious resentment towards his parents and a lesbian fetish he tries to disguise as being progressive.
>>150913699there's no washing machine in their bedroom. how is she going to finish her to completion?
>>150913733>Also Batiuk's writing isn't colored by obvious resentment towards his parentsHis writing absolutely is colored by some kind of weird resentment towards his mother for some unexplained reason (John's smothering alcoholic mother, IIRC there's a comic where Les randomly bitches about his own mother). It's not as obvious as his resentment against jocks though. Also, I forgot another similarity.>Both have characters named Becky>Funky Becky got her arm ripped off>Dumbing Becky got her heart ripped out>Funky Becky has a religious/moral guardian mom who caused her many problems>Dumbing Becky had a religious/moral guardian dad who caused her many problems>Both Beckies are in a rebound relationship with someone they don't seem to actually care all that much for because they lost the person who they really did care about
>>150903958>>150904007Bro, when Joyce dated Joe she had them go at a snails' pace to even do PDA, but when she's with Dorothy shes jumping that bitch's bones in only a few days max? Didn't know Joyce was THAT gay.
>>150913832The entire story is supposed to be that she was always in love with Dorothy and everything else was just lead up to her realizing it.
>>150913803Dorothy is just the Dumbing version of Les.
Joyce and Dorothy are so awful that they make me feel bad for Becky and if she snapped and went Toedad on them I wouldn't blame her.
>>150914033Awful.
>>150904563I've been in a small comics-based fandom for about twenty years, and there was this person who REALLY FUCKING HATED a few characters and wrote the most character assassinating fanfics about them. They drifted away from the fandom for years and that was great, but this year they returned and immediately started up the same old bullshit again. It's the same shit they did 18 years ago, and they're about 40 now.
>>150913699>especially after Les marries Cayla and Batiuk seemingly stops caring.I think part of the issue is that the Class of students after became less tied to the regular cast. Think about it this wayThe first Class is Funky, Les, Cindy, Crazy, Bull, Lisa, Holly, and so on. They were the primary focus up to the early 90s.The second Class is Wally Winkerbean, Becky, and others. Their lives still intersected with Funky and the rest, and in general some of them still show up in Act 3.The third Class is Darrin Fairgood, Pete, Jessica, and others. Only some of them showed up in Act 3. Pete who has no real relation to the original cast mostly shows up because he's a comic book writer.Fourth Class is Summer, Cory, and others. They had more direct ties to the main cast as they were their children.Fifth class was... I think it was like if it was Funky and Les were kids in the 2010s, I forget their names. About the only interaction I remembered they had with the main class was being in Les' class or being at the comic shop.I forget about what happened with the last class before the strip ended. I think like the twins from Crankshaft were in there or something. I'll admit my reading of the comic dropped off a bit in the final years, but it felt like that final Class' stories really intersected much with the main cast or the other later Class charactersSomewhere in the 2010s it was pretty clear Batiuk was more interested in coming up with an in-universe comic company so the comic seemed to be more about that.
>>150918416Meant to say>but it felt like that final Class' stories really didn't intersect much with the main cast or the other later Class characters
When is Mary gonna be revealed to be gay?
>>150912791He actually completely dumped months of his backlog because of how much shit he got. People noticed his backlog counter went down and he confirmed it on BlueskyThese comics were probably drawn after the factHe also ADDED a panel like 2 weeks later to the strip where Dorothy/Joyce kiss where they say “ummmm did we just make out at a genocide protest?”It’s honestly fascinating, he’s literally correcting the record in real time
>>150918416I think it's more that Batiuk didn't care about writing characters who were too dissimilar by himself. It's why the only '98 class members to get any real attention or show up after the timeskip are Darin and Pete who were low social status nerds into comics. Or why everyone in Summer's class, including seemingly Summer herself, gets shafted and a lot more attention is paid to Owen and Cody who are... low social status nerds into comic books.>>150918886Never because that could be a way to develop her sympathetically (a gay girl raised in a fire and brimstone evangelical community who covers up her own self-loathing and internalized conflict between how she was raised and her desires) when Willis and his readers only want her to exist as a strawman. Remember, his readers were horrified at the thought that she might be gay and into Carla because it would take away their favorite punching bag. Who needs well-developed or rouded characters?
>>150919002love the tranny looking on in awed approval with a face like a Rankin Bass character.
>>150919020>Remember, his readers were horrified at the thought that she might be gay and into Carla because it would take away their favorite punching bag. Who needs well-developed or rouded characters? That's exactly how people like this think. God forbid they feel even a twinge of sympathy for someone they've decided is the designated villain and thus pure evil. Anyone who does feel any sympathy is clearly evil too.
>>150918886I want her to turn out to be a transman and date Carla. That way their relationship will be straight and gay at the same time.
>>150912791>>150913307>Are YOU the editor responsible for putting THIS photo on the front page?>>Oh, hello. Uh, yeah. Why?>This photo, with these two girls, versus, you know, literally any other information about the protest.>>It says there's more on page 1B. Right there at the bottom.>But you frontpaged the White girls making out.*deadpan silence, slight blush*>>Listen, this is the content readers demand.
>>150919526>I gotta go find a place to pray>oh okay we know she's the wrong one here
>>150919378It’s almost like a religious fundie mindset, isn’t it? Ironic.
>>150919595It very much is. A lot of people were raised fundie and rejected it for more progressive viewpoints, but they still maintain that fundie framework. It makes disagreeing with them impossible, because they're still seeing everything as a battle between Good and Evil.
>>150919541Raidah is rare in that she's brown and muslim but also generally antagonistic and bitchy.
>>150919020>I think it's more that Batiuk didn't care about writing characters who were too dissimilar by himself. It's why the only '98 class members to get any real attention or show up after the timeskip are Darin and Pete who were low social status nerds into comics. Or why everyone in Summer's class, including seemingly Summer herself, gets shafted and a lot more attention is paid to Owen and Cody who are... low social status nerds into comic books.Yeah but that's the other thing, what exactly were Owen and Cody's stories? All I vaguely remember was Cody getting a crush on Summer. Rest was usually him and Owen at the comic shop or commenting on something going on at high school.Take Wally>Funky's cousin>gets into humiliating situations during his first year of high school>saved Les and Lisa's life when their apartment was on fire>made the mistake of drunk driving and it cost Becky her arm>so guilt-ridden by this he enlists>gets shot down and then presumed dead, then found alive>gets back together with Becky, marries her, goes to Afghanistan, adopts Rana, gets forced back into military service, gets presumed dead for a long time till found, finds out Becky moved on, suffers from PTSD, gets a job at the pizza place, hooks up with the girl who used to briefly work at the comic shop and later the pizza placeDarrin>is Lisa's son from when Lisa got pregnant during high school and was given up for adoption. He got adopted by Fred Fairgood, who was like counselor then principal of the high school during Funky's high school days>90s/00s has mystery about whether or not he learns Lisa is his mother, or Lisa learns Darrin is her son. Is also involved in that drama where the guy who fucked Lisa comes back, but Darrin and the guy still don't know they're related yet>Hooks up with Jessica Darling, the daughter of John Darling, the TV host who got killedLike sure, they liked comics, but they still had more going on around them
From patreonThere's a slipshine of these two banging out now apparently.
>>150920494By the last decade and especially the last few years, he didn't seem to give much of a shit abouy anything but comics as that's when all the annoyingly stupid comic people like Flash Freeman and Batton Thomas enter into the strip. Wally and Darin were from a period where he still cared and Wally'd story effectively ends once Rachel and his dog cure him.
>>150920788Poor cucked bastard.
>>150920788So willis hates his parents, does he hate other men, too? Is he one of those feminist types?
It's ok for "Jocelyne" to say this because it's something a woman would say to her younger sister. Not a autogynephilic, porn-addicted brother that's fantasizing on becoming a lesbian version of his younger sister
These threads are a lot more fun when you don't get the "I hate webcomics but know every detail, character and plot point as well as the author's life in detail" types.
Do we have a free slipshine link somewhere? I'm a pervert but a poor one.
>>150920788>It’s an actual cuckholding comicTonight: the writer’s barely disguised fetish
>>150921492Nah, that's part of the fun. Normal bad is boring.
