I think that their "place" as far as most comics go is as a source of parody. I've seen them joked about in plenty of places, and IIRC there was that one Rick and Morty episode with "Rick Tracts" mentioned. I didn't know these existed till I found them online sometime after 2005, I believe you when you say they were put all over the place in bathrooms and etc, but I have only seen that material since moving down south over 20 years ago now. Think it is much more regional, as it's just not something culturally in places with larger Catholic populations compared to Baptists or Evangelicals.Always fascinating to read through some, I am glad they are so well preserved because there's huge historical and sociologic value in these.
