why
>>
Adult Swim wasted 2 April Fools' pranks back to back on a show they cancelled before it came out

It's already been pieced together what happened.
When you make a crossover, even in the context of the same studio. That is a paperwork nightmare that does genuinely hinge on moving money between departments so subsidiaries 'pay' one another and that's assuming they'd have full rights. A lot of times, the teams behind the different properties have to sign off on how the character used is portrayed (worked into the contract, Wonder Woman's creator had that with DC and even his estate got say on her handling for the longest time which is a large reason she doesn't have many notable stories to her name) and it becomes more paperwork.
This could be a logistic nightmare that could have been a hit and still lost them money. Basically, they did these April Fools and released the proof of concept trailer entirely to see how much hype there was. Beyond that though? Imagine if the Looney Tunes guys, the Hanna-Barbara guys, or any of these other teams just gave permission for that trailer while still having reservations on the final product? Hanna-Barbara especially seem to want to move past the edgy adult swim parody years. Because of this, there was a long line of things that had to happen for this thing to get made as well as a significant risk. Everyone wants to say "we were so close" but the trailer and April Fools jokes just created false hope in something that could be toppled like a house of cards to begin with.
