I was watching the mecha episode of Regular Show, and the jokes are kind of the same as the ones the Japanese make. Even the DB references are the same as the ones the Japanese make. Are there deeper cuts? Yes, it's their country's shit. It's almost like there are references to local things that only an American or Westaboo would know. But it doesn't make them completely lazy, if anything OP is making a problem out of something that isn't a problem.

The original series is a lot of fun but desu parts of it drag. Red Ribbon Army is pretty skippable and the anime only filler is mixed (Popo training Goku by making him fight a Doppelganger is pretty great though).
Unironically though the three Tournament Arcs of pre-Z Dragonball are peak and are arguably some of the best content in the entire franchise.

Steven Universe has a shit ton of anime references, both obscure and main stream. It just does a straight homage to the infamous Evangelion "Congratulations" scene at one point.
>>
>>150930311
Perfect Hair Forever is an actual anime parody and not "look a reference" (although it also does that) so it includes stuff like songs with weird lyrics that have nothing to do with the story and abuse of proper nouns as story elements.

No lesbians to ruin the manga.
Manga would actually focus on Finn and Jake the entire run, no Finn humiliation ritual.
Heavy gag focus, at least early on.
A lot of sexual humor.
Finn is mostly the same, Jake becomes a pervert gag character (there's at least one joke where he shapeshifts into a pair of panties)
Flame Princess probably ends up Finn's end game because Toriyama has a thing for feisty girls.

Honestly anything that isn't either Akira bike slide or Sailor Moon is cool with me.

Also I seems like a good thread to hijack a bit for a question somewhat related to the topic. Not sure if I'm outlier but I've encountered more Inuyasha fan girls than I did Sailor Moon fan girls (actually never met any weeb girls who were into Sailor Moon) in middle school and high school during the 2000s. Where are all the Inuyasha fan girls in the animation industry? Don't think I've ever seen it referenced in anything here in the west. Feel like at least one should have gotten in at some point.

I like how Channel Chasers does take the time to set up the Dragon Ball parody since the beginning of the special, and has it as a tangible endgame that feels believable (Channel that broadcasts it comes before the Dictator channel that Vicky is planning to use to become one).
I also appreciate how its a parody of Goku vs Piccolo Jr even in its art style being more rounded instead of sharp edges that define the Z era.

I mean, Pokémon was garbage. Made for toddlers, “Muh Yatterman” became the standard for toddler shows. Despite the naughty content of the '70s show, it's everything toy commercials were based on. Wacky trio of villains, wacky animal companions, and loud, really loud dialogue. Meanwhile, the West was in a bit of an animation renaissance.
>>
>>150939389
Nope
>>
>>150939415
Pokémon was really bad. I would even say it set the standard for garbage toddler anime. The animation was worse and the plots were worse too. The genre went from the experimental nature of shows like Shin Chan and Chibi Maruko to the stilted animation and plotting of Pokémon. The show set toddler anime back. The movies had good animation? I mean... they're movies. But the content was bad. The Pokémon movie was dreadful. Now, 30 minutes of Digimon, that's an appropriate movie. YGO, which also had godawful animation but better plotting, kind of saved the genre. And Medabots was kind of acceptable. Despite that, Pokémon had the positive aspect of finally bringing anime to the West.

DUDE!!! Both Pokémon and Yatterman are FAR too violent for toddlers and in Yatterman's case far too sexual.

In short, Pokémon and Yatterman are not Blues Clues and Dora The Explorer.

the "Duel Monsters" game in Yugioh was initially called "Magic & Wizards" which was a reference to Magic: The Gathering and it's publisher Wizards of the Coast.

https://jump.fandom.com/wiki/Kazuki_Takahashi
"Originally intended as a one-shot in the manga's episodic introduction of new games, the game was named "Magic and Wizards" as a reference to the card game Magic: The Gathering and its publishing company Wizards of the Coast (the card game's name was changed to "Duel Monsters" in the anime adaptations). However, Shueisha, the publisher of the Weekly Shōnen Jump magazine, received so many letters and fan-mail asking about "Magic and Wizards" that Takahashi decided to extend it. "

Japan only started ''caring'' about the content in their kodomo shows because of the 1995 Gas attacks and the Pokemon Porygon Mass Histerya Fiasco that happened in 98, and even so its mostly just Loli and woman nudity, Shota nudity no one gave two shits, and some shows even went pseudo shotacon (Yokai Watch)

OK i am back, as i was trying to say, her whole issue is the way she writes romance, mostly just toxic and obnoxious, but from the perspective of, no matter how much (or little) of a flawed the male lead is, is HE who goes trough hell and the worst humilliation rituals, while the female lead no matter how bad she is, the universe is ALWAYS on her side, this was the problem with Akane and Kagome, specially the former, and she kinda had a bit of a persecution complex, it was rumored that she might have been a closeted lesbian because she love to draw women in swimsuits and bikinis and got told by her editors that she was drawing a lot of sexy half naked ladies on what was meant to be a girls romance comedy, she didnt took it well and made it about ''men's world''

Her whole stick of the male lead gets humilliated and tormentes only worked for Ataru because he was a piece of shit sexpest pervert with no redeeming qualities whatsoever, and even his original girlfriend hated him, (who she was gonna end up winning at the end then before the focus went to Lum anyways?), also people only liked Lum because sexy exotic girl in bikini, even tough she was just as unlikable as Ataru and also Crazy, however the formula DEFINITIVELY didnt worked in her later works, because none of the later male leads, as flawed as they were, were nearly as unlikable as Ataru, specially not Ranma who at worst is just a grumpy cocky jerk, and even so its only because of the garbage life he has and putting out with crazy phsychos and menharas and his shitty asshole father who is a coward conman.

Hell I've searched a little and we have Rumiko straight up denying it. Those are assumptions made by faggots
>his commment comes from an essay/interview written by Toren Smith in 1989 in which Smith mixes interview quotes in with his own narrative. Smith suggests she was influenced by Bewitched because it was on television in Japan and Takahashi could have theoretically seen it at some point. He says the same about Archie Comics as a "possible influence" on Takahashi's use of love triangles in her work because American GIs brought the comics to Japan (Takahashi lived in Niigata, far from any military bases). Rumiko Takahashi has made it fairly clear in interviews that she only has very general thoughts on American comics and their comparison with manga. In art history this would be an example of looking at eastern culture through a western lens which usually leads to incorrect assumptions and conclusions.

>>150948909
The guys that said anime and manga are just ripoffs of western comics and cartoons are just delusional. They can't accept the fact that Japanese media surpassed the west in almost every single way.

MTG has the multiverse built-in to its world, to create a narrative reason for all these different sets with different themes
there are a few worlds that are like generic DnD setting world, but others are more out-there like ravnica, a world thats nothing but city, and mirrodin, a world made entirely out of metal, and so on

while DnD does have its own muliverse, most DnD stories will take place entirely within just a single plane
whereas MTG is centered on planeswalkers, who casually travel from world to world like its kingdom hearts

FIFW
But in all seriousness Wizards leaving the film rights with Universal for a decade instead of jumping on the animated collectable item series of the 2000s bandwagon permanently crippled their chance of the mainstream giving a shit about their universe, because nobody was going to bother reading subpar fantasy novels. Especially when they cranked out three in a year to keep up with set release schedule and so even the good books were tainted by writers just not having the time in the second and third novels in the cycle.

Twenty-six years and not one fucking show was made to draw in new players. Yu-Gi-Oh!, Pokémon, Duel Masters, Chaotix, and Bakugan get shows, but MAGIC: THE GATHERING can't!? At that point, the game deserves its crossover fate, and it's worse than Fortnite because, at least with Fortnite, you get a better deal with a Battlepass that pays for itself, and gameplay is not locked behind payment.
>>
>>150950312

they do have a ton of crossovers, but each of those sets take place within their own universe while the main set still stays separate from them

>kids just throwing cards on the table
I dislike that you are being reductionist.
Yugi uses the card game as an abstraction for battles. Even at its genesis, things were not just kids playing. There was a layer of dark magic seeping into the game, as seen when Kiba being so obsessed with the visions of his shadow game that builds a machine to recreate it.
And by the time we learn that the game is actually a recreation of egyptian rituals, we are deep in. Not to lention the last arc disregards the card game almost entirely.
Later shows build into this, by playing with the lore and tying it to the card game. Like how in GX it's about the spirits that were contained in said ritual. Or how the signer dragons manifest differently in each era.
You could argue it would be better if they just cut the abstraction of the game, and maybe you would be right, but it certainly wouldn't be as unique or as memorable.
And for the record, Takahashi did borrow elements from Magic when he made the card game arcs for the manga, with some D&D for extra spice.

Ironically Magic is already set up Perfectly for an in-universe version of people just playing the game. Its what planeswalker duels are.
Your deck is your mind
Your hand are the immediate thoughts that one has in the middle of combat
Lands are you drawing upon ones mana bonds to in universe lands via memory
Creatures are copies of people, monsters, and archetypical, concepts made out of Aether created by the Planeswalker
Spells are Spells
and so on

A planeswalker duel would best be mechanically shown as a speed chess style match between two players and vice versa a version of the irl game being shown in universe would be a match with all the turn taking and direct commentary on most the plays cut for momentum action momentum.
In that the closest relative to a MtG show wouldn't be Yugioh, it would be Chaotic.

If anything she knew boys were only reading her crap because of the nudity and sexy girls, specially with Ranma, but with Inuyasha she went full puritan and toned down as such, so mostly normie tweens and fan girls read Inuyasha, while everyone else sorta mocked that show.
>>
>>150957578
Lum and Ranma were read by adult men, kids avoided it.
>>
>>150957537
>>150957537
And even the AS version was censored because LOL, VIZ, or are you thinking on the final series?

Also Tenchi Muyo aired in Toonami there and it was butchered, I think only Gundam Wing had an ok dub translation and even kept the japanese next episode previews.
>>
>>150957350
>HAHA IT SO RANDOM AND NONSENSE BECAUSE ANIME JAPAN SO STUPID
>gibberish names
>>
>>150957622
Tenchi Muyo was before Adult Swim was invented so of course it was butchered.

With Gundam Wing I remember that American Cartoon Network staff had to go over to Japan itself to get the license directly from Sunrise themselves and Sunrise wanted so much money for Gundam Wing that it would've been cheaper to make 55 additional episodes of Johnny Bravo then it was to license Gundam Wing.
>>
>>150957537
Latino here. The inuyasha I remember aired on Toonami and was completely uncensored like pretty much every anime we got.
>>
>>150958210
Was Adult Swim even a thing in Latin America?
>>
>>150958393
For a while in the 2000s, IIRC it was revived at some point in the late 2010s but I have no idea how that is going.
>>
>>150958410
I see.
>>
>>150958393
It was but no one watched it because it was nothing but stupid adult cartoons. It came back in the 2010s but it failed again. It came back, again, in 2023 as a dedicated channel. It's mostly anime, late 90s-early 2000s cartoons and Rick and morty.
>>
>>150957578
I liked Inuyasha, but I was also a kid who only payed attention to the more action driven parts and dropped off the show after a while.
>>
>>150958543
You grew smarter.
>>
>>150958516
Actually, it wasbt until 2007-2008 when they, for a short while, started finally airing anime and they aired Ranma 1/2 but blurred the nudity, then CN and it's directors went super left and Mexican cable channels started to edit ALL their content, even kids shows like Horse show and Steven Universe, even Adventure Time, much to the ire of the fans, and to think that CNLA wanted to air Ikkitousen.
>>
>>150958210
It was NOT uncensored paisano, it was from fucking VIZ media for crying out loud, they also buttraped Rave Master, Zatch Bell and MegaMan NT Warrior.
>>
>>150958516
>because it was nothing but stupid adult cartoons
Cope

>>150958516
>You are NOT gonna beg us to air Anime
>You are NOT gonna beg us to air South Park
>You are NOT gonna be us to air Drawn Together
>You are NOT gonna compare us to American Adult Swim

I remember that ad, it literally was co-opted and wanted the whole thing to burn.
>>
>>150959165
>MegaMan NT Warrior.
Aired on Kids WB, of course it was going to br butchered.
>>
>>150959165
I remember Rave Master and Zatch Bell as huge jokes but I'm pretty sure Inuyasha had blood and nudity... or maybe I watched it on a different channel.

yes, and the entire card game was expanded out of that reference, which you don't seem to get.
>The game wasn't a MTG ripoff, you retard. Hell MTG wasn't the one to invent the concept of hard games
it was the one to invent the concept of trading card games.

here is the page with the first ever mention of the card game in the manga.

also note how the back of the cards were obviously referencing the back of Magic: The Gathering cards with the oval design, and that's what was later made into the unexplained vortex things on the back of Yu-Gi-Oh! cards.

Speaking off, did anyone Latino or not ever got to experience anime dubs from LaTAM during their prime (mid 90s to early 2000s), whatever visiting Mexico or watching Spanish channels?

I know DBZ aired in Telemundo, I even catch it once.

Oh, Anon.. You haven't seen what they did to my boy.

>>150960568
the spin-offs sets dont really have stories, they are just re-tellings of the source materials events
the main story is still a high fantasy setting, there are no earthly humans in there
>>
>>150960488
I did. Before shitty big networks like CN, local channels aired uncensored anime. This was this first anime I watched https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QUCbsl2xu3k

I recalled being in 99 on the US with my aunt in San Diego, I got to see reruns of the americanized DBZ on CN and it felt so weird, but on their cable packaging they actually had local CANAL 12 Tijuana and they were airing DBZ when Goku fights Freeza as a Super Saiyan and Porunga was summoned.

>Audiomaster 3000 dubs

They were K-Mart store to (pre-Cuernavaca's) Intertrack WalMart's

They didn't even added translated songs during the first airing of Ranma 1/2, plus they started dubbing since season 2.
>>
>>150961015
There was a version of Ranma without the dubbed songs?

When it pre-premiered in Xmas of 97 and eventually in August 98, they showed the series starting S2 with it's original japanese OP and EDs for the first year up until they started airing the episodes in the right order and censored as well, by that time they updated the OPs and around that time they premiered Mikami.

And? it still wasn't a ripoff and it was influenced by multiple card games not just mtg.
>it was the one to invent the concept of trading card games.
mtg itself was not entirely original and it borrowed concepts from other board games and rpgs.
>"the game is set up so the players are both wizards"
You fucking retard, DnD has had dueling wizards before mtg was even a thing

An Anon tried to peddle the garbage ass Pokémon anime as an “expansion” of the games when it's inferior to the games in absolutely everything. pick better fights f/a/ggot
>>
>>150964923
Pokémon wasn't garbage, the 4Kids dub was shoddy yes but there have been much worse dubs *cough*4Kids One Piece*cough*.
>>
>>150964947
>It's the 4Kids dub.
No, Anon. If anything, the 4Kids dub is even more mature than the toddler speak of the Pokémon anime. If you've learned entry-level Japanese, you'll cringe at the dialogue in these anime. Now, if you had peddled something good like Digimon or YGO, that would be fine. But Pokémon? Garbage all the way. And I say this as someone who watched Pokémon up to Gen 5 anime.

>>150964921
It was ahead of its time, we only now caught up with it.

Not the case, in fact other way around as 4Kids cut out the more adult aspects of the original Pokémon anime.

For weeb references to basedpog at, add Akira bike slides, a random Yamcha death pose, super Saiyan power up/magical girl transformation, anything involving giant battles give a tokusatsu homage (Godzilla, Ultraman, Power Rangers, Evangelion) but all of the references have to be as half assed as all the other past references
