What really helps it is the author has a really good sense of the characters. That's more than half the battle of a good fanfic. If you can nail the characters, you can make damn near any concept work. Characters read as them and their actions make sense. And the technical writing of word choice, sentence structure and flow is good as well, so it's just enjoyable to read. "Anon" being a green guy with fiery eyebrows also just makes sense in-universe. Like, yeah, a Sinner could totally have those features, so it feels more plausible as opposed to Anon existing somewhere like in a story about the real world.
