But it could not have been handled worse, since they wrote it like a "finn overreacts and they aren't really broken up, in fact they weren't even really exclusive yet" until the last second.

After hearing about Penn leaving and all the crap added to the show years later, I can't help but pissed off about what Muto and others did to this show. Luckily, I can easily skip those latter seasons regardless of how good some say those seasons were. I just want Adventure Time the way it was without all that unnecessary bullshit (lore, Bubbline, etc.).
