>>150979505>Yeah but there's always at least some kernel of the original baked in.gonna have to disagree because of Grodd. the only quality the Absolute version shares with the original is they're both chimps. other than that, there's literally nothing that visually connects the two. i'll agree that she doesn't look much like Zatanna, but she's definitely not the first case of a character that visually looks almost nothing like their original. her design's on the same tier as Mirror Master imo in terms of how similar they look to their original counterpart, with Grodd being worse than them honestly, writing this out now, Flash's villans are probably the worst offenders on characters that look nothing like their original counterpart. which would be fine, if they at least looked cool too, but they all look lame as hell

But this is a design we're seeing presumably where she's just been released from an underground max security prison. We don't know where she's been or how she might change. I'm not coping because I don't have an issue with it, but I do anticipate that Diana will TNJ her and that may come with a costume change.

So you've got a prescient point there.Zatanna here is not presented as a primary selling point, though. She's a prospective villain in Absolute Wonder Woman. I am looking forward to Z presenting as an effective foil to Absolute WW, and the crust punk to Hell Amazon warrior princess is an interesting dichotomy.My one hang up on this book has been that Diana meets her victories with great ease. I have been looking forward to a conflict where she just can't deal, and I reasonably anticipate that this will be the one. I doubt it will disappoint, but maybe it will. I think this conflict will deliver.

I've been reading all the Absolute books, and WW, Martian Manhunter, and Green Lantern are probably the most original, though GL has been a bit boring while WW has been quite thrilling. MM is sort of channeling Grant Morrison, and it has some great psychedelic art.AWW has perfectly serviceable comic art but excels through Sherman's creative and dynamic paneling and page layouts. If you care for that kind of thing, it's great.As I mentioned, AWW I think suffers from Diana being such a perfect hero as protagonist; but I am holding out; and in fact this latest "filler" issue I think indicates that she will face consequences for the sacrifices demanded of her magic.There was an interim arc beautifully illustrated by Mattia de Iulis which had her pledge a portion of each of her years to Hades ala Persephone which ought to come back to bite her if Thompson follows her established threads.So Diana has this established paradigm of magic in exchange for sacrifice, while the Zatanna we know can just magic things up by speaking it backwards. Absolute Diana has been presented as a hero immaculate even in spite of difficulties or flaws. They have set it up well and I'm looking forward to it. It looks like they will not encounter yet though, until a few more months.
