Underrated event. Why isn't this available as a TPB?
>>150984976Events are trash.
>>150984976Came out at a weird time and is largely forgotten about. Its entirely possible someone high up at DC has a hate boner for it too
>>150986762It's the rare case where a Joker event isn't your typical bat-wank. It heavily features obscure DC villains and the main protagonists are Nightwing, Oracle, and Shilo Norman, of all people. It's the sort of kino that DC would never consider doing in the 2020s. Or the 2010s. Really not even for most of the 2000s.
>>150986762>Its entirely possible someone high up at DC has a hate boner for it too>Chuck DixonThey absolutely do, they're kinda stuck republishing his Robin, Nightwing, and Batman stuff because they sell too well But they try to bury anything else he did.
>>150984976Fun /co/ fact. This event was the second ever appearance of our favorite aquatic mammal and the last time we would see her alive before rebirth.
>>150987836Orca only appeared twice before they killed her off? Goddamn
>>150984976It did get a trade. Just out of print
>>150987872Yup, and she went out really fucking brutally too. Getting shot in the face and then having croc eat her corpse. Someone wasn't a fan of her.
>>150988004I knew how she died, apparently years before /co/ latched onto her beauty she was widely derided in comic circles and considered one of the worst modern batman villains. I cant understand why either
>>150988056She was too silly for 2000s DC, it was a different time
>>150989763The 2000s thought DKSA was peak Frank Miller.2000s fanboys were fucking morons.
>>150989763Im shocked no on gooned to her back then
>>150989805No one liked DKSA back then, what the fuck are you talking about?
>>150989805SA has been universally reviled since it's release anon
>>150989941There were a a few pics of her from way back when but she came out before internet art had really exploded and her original design really wasn't all that flattering beyond the huge rack.
>>150986762It was supposed to be Chuck Dixon's swan song on the Batman books, but IIRC they had issues with getting someone to replace Chuck on Nightwing so he lingered on the title a bit longer. The book was supposed to be the last big Joker story for a while as Dixon had Batman editoral pledge to him that Joker would be embargoed for several years to give the ending some depth and weight (Joker being put in maximum security in Antarctica and Babs finally gaining closure on her fear that Joker would just keep escaping and killing people). But then Jeph Loeb and Jim Lee blew into the main Batbook and demanded Joker be used in Hush that story resetting Joker in Arkham and getting away with horrific murders with no consequences. It also came out literally a month after Our Worlds At War wrapped up and the same month as the September 11th Attacks, so DC was stuck with a story where Joker and jokerized villains are doing 9-11 tier mass murder (to the point that one storyline element, Joker creating acid rain) had to be dropped entirely from the storyline at the last minute. But most of all, Chuck Dixon fucked up the ending by having Nightwing beat Joker nearly to death after Joker tricks Dick into thinking he killed Tim Drake and only being stopped by Batman and Joker hallucinating being barred entrance to heaven when Batman performs CPR on him to keep him breathing. And the utter and complete disconnect that was the post JLL issues of Nightwing having Dick claim he straight up MURDERED Joker, rather than beating nearly to death.
>>150984976Because Joker sucks.
>>150984976>How about we make everyone the Joker?Absolute garbage
Brian Bolland draws a truly frightening Joker.
>>150989965Tell that to the 150k+ who helped it top the sales charts, and the absolute glazing it got on CBR.
>>150991499That's due to people buying it before they figured out it sucked.> and the absolute glazing it got on CBRwhat? Any proof of that?
>>150984976
>>150984976DC wants you to forget that Nightwing did what Batman refuses to and Red Hood always fails at.

I like Dixon but man this event was trash and the original pitch was even worse. https://dixonverse.wordpress.com/2015/03/05/behind-the-scenes-of-last-laugh-by-scott-beatty/>In one iteration, Superman… not Nightwing… was the hero who killed the Joker in a fit of rage after discovering the body of Ralph Dibny (a.k.a. Elongated Man) stretched across the Golden Gate Bridge with the words “SEE WHAT I CAN DO?” carved into his elongated corpse.>Instead, we settled on Nightwing doing the deed. We weren’t allowed to kill Elongated Man. Our “crossover with consequence” became less consequential. Alternatively, we pitched killing the Joker outright, not having Batman resuscitate him. Our plan was to have new villain Rancor, whose power was the ability to heighten negative feelings all around him, take up the mantle of Mister J.>But… we were forbidden. The Joker sells action figure and peanut butter. Imagine our surprise all these years later when the Joker cuts off his own face and later hacks off Alfred Pennyworth’s hand. And we thought OUR story was edgy!Carlin was a better Executive Editor than Didio for not allowing this, too bad he also made it a crappy line-wide event in an attempt to save his job since sales were going down.
>>150993471Wow, that pitch is edgy garbage.
>>150993503It was the 00s. EDGE was in.
>>150993546It was 2001. DC's edgy period didn't start till the Didio era. Never figured the boring conservative writers like Dixon were pushing that bullshit and getting shot down.
>>150993471>But… we were forbidden. The Joker sells action figure and peanut butter. Lmfao
shit's fucked yo
>>150984976DC are dysfunctional as a company, to answer your question.
