>>150992108Well I don't know about the movies, etc they seem to be doing fine, I don't think they need any help, but the comics are floundering so I'll just speak about that.>Organize a comic competitionThe editors currently in house suck and wouldn't recognize talent if it slapped them in the face, and they have even less ability to determine what the readers like. The competition would require entrants to submit a 20-60 page comic issue of their own creation. Thy can make it by themselves or as part of a team, it can be original or derivative, it doesn't matter, but it must be their own creation, no plagiarism or anything that violates publishing laws. The winner recieve a large cash prize as well as have their comic published in a Marvel comic to comic shops everywhere. If they seem to have potential to create more hits, they will be hired and given a salary to produce more for us.The runner ups will recieve cash prizes and a smaller publication. The competition will be judged by a popularity poll, the comic that recieves the most votes wins. To vote, you must buy a comic, any comic, this gives you a voting ticket. This way only actual comics customers are not tourists are given a voice. But anyone is able to view the entries, all of them will be freely hosted on a website. Perhaps there could even be a "public vote" for non ticket holders and a "reader vote" for ticket holders, to see if there is a discrepency between the two.The competition would be advertised as widely as possible to attract as many people as possible. There are not restrictions on entering. This is purely to attract new talent, and specifically talent that is appealing to the readers
>>150992108the X-Men are being totally separated out, comics, vidya, movies, everythingfrom now on, the X-Men are in their own universes, and it's all porn
>>150992523cont>Create internal competitionI would repeat this comics competition again and again on a regular schedule. Once there are enough quality entries coming in and winning prizes, I would then pool those people together into their own department called the Competitive Comics Department. The salaries will be high, but there will be a fierce competitive culture surrounding employment.20 comics will be created by 20 different authors (author being the person or team making the individual comic) and sold together on a monthly basis under the branding of "Marvel Competitive".The comics will be given rankings based on their rolling 6 month sales. The comic with the most sales is declared rank 1, the comic with the fewest is declared rank 20.New entries are given a 6 month grace period, where they are given a chance to gain readership figures.Comics that rank 15-20 are to be put on the chopping block and replaced by new comics.New comics will come exclusively from the competitions mentioned in >>150992523This will ensure that only stuff with good potential to be popular is being published, and anything that fails to succeed is cancelled. This would create internal competition within this department. Where even if a comic is making rank 1 sales figures, if the bottom 19 comics suddenly start improving and start selling better, that rank 1 may become rank 20 and get cancelled. This will create a never ending arms race, where everyone is trying to make the best comic they can to outdo the person above them.
>>150992108I make everything public domain.Every comic. Every character. Every movie. No more copyright. No more trademarks.
>>150992644cont, addressing some concerns you may have with this idea,>Won't this lead to only slop?Slop is always more popular than something niche, but you cannot support niche without the existence of slop, because niche by its very definition does not make alot of money.Marvel comics are not making enough money to support anything at all, this is a strategy in building up the sales figures. Once the average top 10 comics is selling over a million units, then we can talk about ways to produce niche ideas.>Couldn't people cheat the numbers by just buying multiple of the comics they likeYes, and this would make the company more money. But more seriously, if someone wants to support a comic they like that is otherwise not very popular, it is far cheaper to simply make the comic better than spend millions buying as many copies as you can trying to outcompete a natural best-seller.>Wouldn't this produce a toxic internal environment?Knowing the history of drama within the comics industry, yes absolutely, however this is where the point about individual ownership is essential. The usual strategy to sabotage another comic creator is to gain authorship of their work and deliberately ruin it. But comic creators in this department are not allowed to work on any comic that is not their own. So long as that comic creator continues to produce their good comic, everybody else can do nothing but whine and cry on the sidelines.
>>150992715>comics>selling over 1 million unitanon are you insane? The best-selling of all time, 90s speculation bubble excluded, hardly broke 500k
>>150992715If anyone has any criticisms or improvements to this idea please do share. I've been theorycrafting this for a while now and geniunely think this would be an effective means of reviving comics, all without even touching the existing structureIt would>allow anyone with talent to get their foot in the business without any prior connections>naturally kick out any and all untalented people who's comics do not sell>force innovation, quality, and in general the production of comics that people actually want to readAnd it's all hands-off, meaning nobody in a position of power can make any dumb editorial decisions that go against the wishes of the customer. It all just runs itself like a machine.

>>1509927631 million would be a big deal in the 90's, but the entertainment industry has exploded since then. It's only comics that have been historically so bad that they've had no share in those growth. If they started improving, 1 million would be an easy win.

>>150992793I get what you're aiming for here but the same argument could be used to falsely promote the chances of any dead formatit's like saying telegrams were historically the preserve of the rich or the middle class and required specialist equipment but with today's tech anybody could be receiving telegrams on their phones, like, yeah, they could, of all the possible communication methods they could have an app on their phone to convert messages and send them as unencrypted morse codewhat's happened to comics is the same thing that happened to the music industry: they stopped looking for new talent, stopped looking for new creatives and new audiences, and now the only people who get huge already have a following from their own work; this is not like playing the clubs until you get a following and the A&R notice you, it's literally just the mystery algorithm throwing a bone to those who can meet the criteria - pretty, young, rich enough to keep trying for a few years - and ignoring all the rest regardless of talentthe music publishers then sign these kids and push them for a few years, but really what they're making money off is the back catalog, which is mostly ancient acts who are still inexplicably touring because they've been touring since the 1970s or even longerso it is with comics where you not only have these occasional nostalgic returns of old writers or artists nobody really remembers, but you have these ridiculously ancient guys, 60+, still working day to day at the same job with ever-diminishing returns of sales while their back catalog props up the publishers, in many cases through adaptations rather than reprint sales
>>150992776One concern that does come to mind would be where one particular type of comic that naturally has a greater popularity than another, it could completely dominate all 20 shelf slots and drive away readers who might still be large in numbers... but just not large enough. This is the problem Webtoons has where the majority of readers are women, and so all the most popular comics are ones popular amongst women. And by the way Webtoons works where only the most popular comics are given any advertising, basically anything for men or whatever other demographic is completely suffocated. While I support slop since it makes money, and money is desperately needed here... Popularity is not a binary status of either slop or niche, there is a market to capitalise on with demographics inbetween total slop and total niche.Just as on 4chan, here on /co/ in 2011 My Little Pony was immensely popular and it totally overtook the entire board, suffocating any other type of thread, popular things can be a bad thing. The solution perhaps is to identify things that are suffocatingly popular, and separate them off into their own sphere, viz. /mlp/.If this Competitive Comics things proved successful and such a situation did arise, then there would have to be some mechanism to create a second department just for that popular type of comic. While this could be done by a human with keen insight, I would prefer this to be done mechanically because I do not trust comics executives to make good decisions now or ever.
>>150992893Plenty of 30-50 year olds in comics, they just suck. And comics sell big numbers, just not the American ones in America.
>>150992893I think it's a question of "how much potential does the medium have?"The telegram has no potential, its made completely obsolete by newer technology. But I think comics do have potential, I think they have immense potential, because of the inherent power that is contained within comics, that is... one person can create a comic, and the experience of reading a comic is visceral. The ratio of "effort to create" to "experience provided" is huge.Movies and videogames are of course always going to be more popular than comics by the sheer experience they provide... but they require such immense resources to create, thousands of people, millions of dollars. This barrier to entry in movies and videogames naturally blocks many people who may have amazing ideas, but they just can't get infront of an investor. But comics are cheap to create, all you need is a pen and paper really. Any schmuck in their bedroom can create a comic, and if it turns out to be good, then people can read it and it can be appreciated. Comics as a medium, have the potential to spawn some of the most innovative and interesting ideas, because it's just so easy to get into and so easy to sift through a great many comics to find those gems. And I think it is this potential for great ideas in such high numbers that will keep it relevant for all time. It's just... the current way comics companies work is they don't scout out new talent very well and they don't listen to the customers, they're neglecting their potential.
>>150992776So the model solely uses monthly sales to determine if a book should stay or not? Did you take trades into consideration? This is how people believe Marvel has been gaming the system. It's hard to sell a lot of the poorer Marvel comics to the average Wednesday Warrior but if they can keep them in print long enough. By emotional blackmailing the stores that order, editorial can make a trade and offload it to Scholastic, libraries, and school book fares. Then wouldn't you know it the book is a best seller and we should consider promoting the creative team to a more popular character. The untalented pipeline is real bros. As long as that exist there is no insensitive to do quality work, regardless of your abilities. Also, how would this model account for continuity or is each book it's own earth?

>>150992964Anon, comics are less expensive that movies and games but more expensive that you think. Unless you can draw and ink yourself you have to pay a lot of people. Writer, artist, inker, colorist, letter, editor, publisher, and distributor. The many failed to fulfill crowd funded campaigns prove that not just any person can make comics. Depending on the quality of talent, comics cost upwards of $1000 a page. That's a minimum buy in of $22k to $30k before the book is even on store shelves.
>>150993098As for the tracking sales things, I'll be honest I'm not quite sure, comics are superbly convoluted in that manner. I would like to suggest simplifying the business to more resemble other industries, but that's beyond the immediate scope of this idea. The fundamental principle is that comics that sell well should be rewarded, and comics that don't sell should be cancelled.I'm sure Marvel themselves have a clearer idea of what money is coming in and from where, but what they choose to publish about their figures is left murky.Given the fact that this is a distinctively new push, ie, the comics would be branded with the Marvel logo and then underscored with "Competitive", and they would be all sold as one on a unique stand, with ratings and indexes listing the others. They would be separate comics in terms of the comics themselves, but marketing wise they would be a set of sorts. In that way, I don't think it would be too unreasonable to simply track the direct sales and anything that happens after that is not relevant. Perhaps a contract could be formed with the comic stores that unsold comics must be sold back to them and not onwards, to better track the numbers, but I'll be honest, it's a messy business. The voting thing also would likely have to be a one-use ticket, so the only sale that really matters is the first one.As for the other point though, about continuity. Each book would be its own thing with its own creative control. They would not be working together at all, they would exist as separately as Marvel is to DC in terms of editorial decisions.
>>150993185There's potential in digital distribution to cut costs and only print trades, but the industry has infamously struggled with that.
>>150993185I exaggerate the ease of entry a little, I confess. But compared to movies and games, they're remarkably easy to get into, and I think that is its greatest strength.Books are easier still to get into... but books are hard to judge quickly. You can watch the trailor of a film, or see a snapshot of a game. You can skim through a comic to see if you like it not. With music you can listen to 1 second of it and know if you like it or not, But with a book you have to read it quite alot of to know if it's any good. This makes finding good books very difficult if they're not already famous.Furthermore the experience of a traditional book is very weak compared to movies or videogames. Movies and videogames are simply more exciting. But comic books hit a nice middle ground of all these things. They're cheap to make (compared to those other things), They're easy to judge. And the experience of reading them can at times be almost comprable to movies. This blend of traits is enough to justify its continuted relevance and argue for its potential in the entertainment industry. We just need to support it and let it grow to meet its potential.
