>Mark Millar on TransformersWould this have actually worked in the early 2000's?
In case anyone's curious on the other suggestions
>Artist: Pat Lee
>>150994254It would've been kind of like Maniac 5 probably.
>>150994280Yeah that article played a role in him getting the license when he made Dreamwave IIRCThat and a how to draw mecha article he didSay what you will about Dreamwave as a whole, it genuinely a huge success when their Transformers line first came out and their anime influenced house artstyle played a role in it
Wizard was an amazing brand of slop. I still miss it.
Dreamwave would be inspiring if Pat Lee wasn't a tremendous douchebag who blew it all up>>150994373They're the G4 of comicsI'll let you decide what to make of it
>>150994254It's really hard to say, he wasn't full on cynic yet, but he was getting close. Bigger question is how he would handle Hasbro if they had any requests or unallowable to cross lines, Mark tends to follow the rules if given up front, it's when things change after the fact he gets crazy.>>150994280Back then fans took what they can get, remember this issue was printed when Beast Machines was the -only- Transfomers media being made and aired. They would have taken a G1 inspired TF comic written by Chuck Austen and drawn by Rob Liefeld if it just meant more truck and less monkey. >>150994295So he do comparable to that IDW Sunstreaker headmaster arc then?
Might as well post their other dream team articles for other subjects
>>150994254>80s nostalgic is 20 years old nowWHERES MY 2000S NOSTALGIA BLITZWHERES MY MLAATR AND ZIM REVIVAL NICK?
>>150994317>and their anime influenced house artstyle played a role in itdisagree see middle point in >>150994403 Just about anything would turn a buck that was more in line with G1 at the time, fans were starving to the point that it wouldn't be until post 2007 movie that they started to sober up and have standards and preferences again. Most fans in 2000 era would have never dreamed Bumblebee would be as well know as Bat-man.
>>150994403This article was around when he was working on Authority and working on the first arc of Ultimate X-Men, so he was getting attention for crossing lines. But you bring up a good point about whether Hasbro would've allowed him to do some stuff. I think in general they'd allow anything that Simon Furman was able to get away with. All the TFs would just act like quippy assholes like other Millar characters though
>>150994424Well between two plans into towers, a housing market crash, a global lockdown, tariff wars and the most publicly broadcasted pedocoverup in all of history happening, their just isn't a lot of cash to go around for making nostalgic things. Better luck for the 2020 kiddies I guess?
They actually got Mahfood to draw a Last Man Standing match-up of Osbournes vs Osborns
>>150994436Maybe but remember that the article is dated December 2000 (which means the magazine was released in November instead, and that was when Beast Machines were wrapping up) Hasbro was also looking to import in Car Robots and run it as a filler series because they then were working with Takara on what became Transformers Armada/Micron LegendThey may have seen Pat Lee's piece in Wizard, talked to him and decided that he should handle the comic
>>150994423>Alan Moore>Final FantasyHe might as well do his own thing.
>>150994424You got Florpus
>>150994504>Chuck Dixon writing Harry PotterI mean I could sort of see that, he wrote Robin and he wrote that Elseworlds comic Conjurors where it was a universe where magic dominated the world. But the seethe on Twitter would be big considering how controversial Dixon and JK Rowling got
>>150994510I'm talking about what was said with " it genuinely a huge success when their Transformers line first came out and their anime influenced house artstyle played a role in it" It's anime style had nothing to do with it. It was the fact Transformers fans wanted g1 back so bad they take it in just about any forum. The 3H Botcon guys talk about that a lot that the reason they made half the stuff they did like Primal Prime was because fans wanted -anything- G1 adjacent because it was their childhood and/or they just wanted something other than beasts. Pat Lee just showed their was an appetite to be fed which he royally fucked up and the IDW guys took advantage off after the fact. If anything IDW proves my point for how much unspeakable garbage they had to make before ever losing sales and eventually the license. This isn't to knock on fans but just to tone down on what Pat brought to the table, which was just the money to start a Transfomers comic and Hasbro was very shameless back then, again, look at Beast Machines and what they allowed.
>>150994403>>150994462Reminder that DWJ had to fight for the scene where Optimus Prime accidentally steps on a deer and realizes just how fragile life on Earth is compared to on CybertronThat kind of puts things in perspective
>>150994725source on that claim? While Hasbro has changed over the years, I can't see them care about that.
>>150994725Did you just compare Hasbro 2000 to Hasbro 2025? Is anyone in the company the same people now as they were then?
>>150994817I think that was the point, that 25 years ago Hasbro would let Arcee be a tranny but now they are worried what stepping on a deer would imply.
>>150994806Director's commentary from DWJ's YouTube channel
>>150994841Wild. I guess decades of Bay films and IDW Troonfoolry finally got to them. Hard to believe this is the same company that didn't care Optimus Prime and Megatron could be murder in the most stupid ways so long as it got toys to sell. Also>when a deer would run awayThose readers would be fucking surprised how dumb deer are. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4raYY8aMCaw
>>150994465>Sopranos comicWhat the fuck
>>150994269I always thought Dixon would be a good fit for TMNT after that nightwing issue where he and Robin are training on a train while blindfolded.
>>150994254Arcee would be raped
>>150994504Magical, early Ramo's fits well with the whimsy of Harry Potter.
>>150994958while Hasbro has been apparently encouraging the stuff in IDW and Earthrise, they did basically have no control over the Bay movies besides some vetoeing some things early on and asking for other changes
>>150994436Nah, the fact that it was such detailed and modern looking art was a big deal. Comics were fairly popular with the small TF online community at the time, Dreamwave was really popular for how detailed the art was that it basically gave everyone a modern look at what G1 would look like.If it was using some of the crappier IDW artists, for example, it wouldn't have made as big a splash. Dreamwave art was everywhere for TF merchandising in the 2000's.
>>150994254Transformers pales in comparison to ABC Warriors
>>150996581People were mocking it back then pretty hard. It was just that, again, Lee had the license. Also the aritst everyone lost their ever loving mind for on the TF comic was Don Figueroa who's work was a lot more balanced than Pat's>Dreamwave art was everywhere for TF merchandising in the 2000's.Don Figueroa's art was everywhere and he also did a lot of IDWs stuff as well. That's the thing, most IDW artists were the Dreamwave artists after Lee fuck everything up to simp for some girl. The masses back in the early 00s agrees Lee was the issue not the solution. TF comics would have still happen without him as Hasbro was eyeing Image at the time too and all the artists but Lee were already contacted with Hasbro, it's just Lee's offer was cheaper than Image comics and Hasbro paid for that.
>>150996882>People were mocking it back then pretty hard. ItDave Willis, not most people. Don't take the wiki as fact, it's biased.
>>150996882so you were at most a kid back then right?People fucking loved the dreamwave artstyle back then. Yes, other artists like Don Figueroa and Dan Khanna too, but the dreamwave house style was so popular it was imitated by Hasbro internally when Dreamwave blew up
>>150994254All of these have been redone, some multiple times.None have been done well.>>150994449Some potential here.
>>150994269It'd make for an interesting launch but Joe Mad would have been off it by issue 3
>>150994581>>150996882I don't think you know or understand much about what was going on.Pat Lee did despicable things and many artists from Dreamwave are vastly better artists than he is. But to try and downplay his role and the role of that Wizard image is just dishonest history rewriting.Dreamwave at the time of the Wizard article was not a publishing company, they were a studio publishing their comics through Image. If Hasbro was looking to work with Image, they were probably expecting to work with Dreamwave because they were being published over there. Multiple publishers tried to pitch for Transformers while using that very Pat Lee image from Wizard in it, with the promise that they'd try to get Dreamwave to work with them. Adam Fortier convinced Dreamwave to publish their own comics and just work with Hasbro directly. So when Dreamwave got the license in late 2001, they severed ties with Image to publish on their own.You can read up on that in https://web.archive.org/web/20081007043446/http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=article&id=14153Yes, Pat Lee is deservingly mocked now, but people forget that he was popular back in the late 90s/early 00s and showed up on Wizard's Top 10 Artists list. People turned against him around 2004 because that was when more and more of his and Dreamwave's problems accumulated and were made public, and that Shortpacked comic is from 2005.And like >>150997209 pointed out, Hasbro and Takara were using Dreamwave art for their G1 rerelease boxes.
>>150994332>>150994343Wonderful art, very soulful and 70s super robotWhich is why comic would be delayed for months per issue but that damn sunstreaker alone could carry a 70s super robot show
>>151000132>Despicable thingsHe didnt pay anyone and blew the money on cars and penthouses which is bad but it aint despicable,he didnt killed those hookers just fucked them on employees dime
>>150996882>be sure to put cracks everywhereDid he make the mini comics that came with Armada toys back in the day? The robots were cracked in those too.
>>150994958>0:23Did it survive?
>>151000132>Hasbro and Takara were using Dreamwave art for their G1 rerelease boxesWhy wouldn't they? They own all the work they have never been the types to have any shame when it came to saving a buck. That's why some here see it as damning if the argument is the picked Lee, Hasbro always went with the cheapest whore back then, it's why they ditched Sunbow for DiC with the GiJoe cartoon, they were offering to do comparable work for much cheaper. After 20 years of Bay and gender wars however it seems the new leads are somewhat more picky with how the brand is handled.
>>150994254Fuck no, Mark Millar couldn't write his way out of a paper bag. It would've been edgy garbage like everything that hack shits out.
>>150994254Of course not, but it is crazy to me Robert Kirkman was really close to being the writer for Pat Lee Transformers.
How would it go for the babysitter?
>>151002175>Companies pitching Hasbro on a Transformers comic use the Pat Lee image from Wizard to get Hasbro interested>Hasbro went with Dreamwave because it was the only way to get Pat Lee>Therefore Hasbro picked Pat Lee because they went with the cheapestYou really are to critical thinking as Pat Lee is to running a company
>>150994254>Mark MillarLiterally who? Can we ban e-celeb thread for buck sake!
>>151004678>Not knowing who MillarFucking newfaggot casual
>>150994254When will he Mark Millar that Transformers? Robots in Disguise?
