7 years since their last feature film? Was Missing Link that bad? Or did Travis Knight get bored of his toy and wandered off to do something else?

Missing Link was delayed too because of him leaving to direct Bumblebee

I didn't think Missing Link was necessarily bad, but, the execution of the story was terrible. I think they should of explored the secret forest below instead, and then got captured. I think the stop-motion was the chefs kiss, but it also felt a lot stiffer than the other works. It was pretty mid, not great, not bad. Same with the Kubo, which I felt kinda was lacking in areas but I can't put my finger on it.

Skimming the Laika wiki page, it does look like he's using Laika to make big boy movies too.

What did all those stop motion experts and equipment do during those seven years? Did they do all the work for Wendel and Wild? (but under contract so Peele's film company would get all the credit?)

Some googling suggests that a lot of the stop motion talent in the U.S. lives in Portland because that was where Will Vinton studios was based, which turned into Laika after Knight acquired it. And then veteran Laika staff go off to other studios and do other projects when Laika is dormant. Wendell and Wild and Del Toro's Pinnocio were both also made in Portland.
