The "gross close up" joke works best when it's used sparingly so you don't expect it when it comes. It's almost more of a "funny jumpscare" in execution. Early Spongebob used it incredibly effectively since it was very fresh at the time, and always knew the right spots to use it. Unfortunately, since Spongebob got so popular EVERYWHERE started using it, and much less effectively since they didn't understand that in order for it to be funniest you can't be expecting it. Spongebob failed in this as it went on as well, they got too much good feedback for it, and overused it instead of keeping it as a trick gimmick they could pull out of their sleeves.The joke became too commonplace, and instead of being funny by being an out of style image you weren't expecting, it just became an eye rolling crutch for people to rely on instead of writing anything actually funny or witty and instead rely on being overly gross to an annoying degree (because obviously the animators kept trying to one up each other on how gross they could be in kids cartoons). Did it even fall out of style? I still see it in shows like Gumball and Teen Titans Go, I think the only the Cal-Arts style cartoons seem to be overtly avoiding it in their humor.
