The tree is there simply to prove how much your pet loves and obeys you by never touching it. Lucifer takes issue with the whole idea of keeping semi-sentient pets and busts the whole thing open knowing it's at least better to die free than live forever in a cage.
I've seen it and I just gotta say that Nifty turning out to be Roo in disguise felt a bit Sith Lord Jar Jar Binks to me. I can see what Viv was trying to do but it just didn't really work in the execution.
