Yesterday a young Spider-Man beat up a mob dog, the amnesiac Asgardians defeated Death, and Venom almost destroyed the universe

It's weird but I think this is one of the only flashback stories to actually do anything with the DeFalco retcon about MJ always knowing. Outside of Parallel Lives at least
>>
>>
>>
>>
>>150997078
When I first read this I thought the big twist/retcon in this story was something Busiek made up. But apparently it’s from a graphic novel by Gerry Conway (can’t remember the name) who tried to establish when MJ found out. Which makes sense because this series seems to mostly use or add to existing continuity instead of coming up with big retcons on its own.

Interestingly (or maybe not) the editor of this series, Tom Brevoort, said he hated that retcon of how early MJ found out.

Oh sorry, you mentioned the name of the OGN, Parallel Lives.

Yeah DeFalco just had MJ say she'd known "for years" and Conway was the one who made it so that she knew since the start

Lee actually didn’t use narration as much as other superhero writers, believe it or not. Especially later in the 60s.

If you compare Lee’s scripts over Kirby’s art with the scripts Kirby wrote himself, Lee is much more willing to let the art speak for itself, which is counterintuitive but true.

Busiek’s narration is more based on the 1970s writers at Marvel who used captions for everything (eg Steve Gerber, Chris Claremont).

Honestly the twist is kind of a shame, these guys were 300% more charming than every other new group of X-treme brutes the 90s tried to introduce

People should do more with it. And I don't mean more of MJ having prequel run-ins with Spidey (maybe some fanservice is ok but not much) but more like stuff where MJ is growing up in high school in a world with heroes as events happen and maybe some civilian stories of mutants appearing, technology changing, and normal everyday drama. Maybe these could be contrasted with like Mayday and her new problems in that same but different world. Yes I want more Mayday and a Spider-Girl book.
>>150997136
Brevoort has always had abysmal taste regarding Spider-Man. No surprise there, with the walking fedora.
>>150997841
Bagley spidey :)
>>150997855
Moments like this are where I feel like I would be inept if I was making a comic. Because I can see the construction of the scene, where the eyes flow from panel to panel and I would want to preserve each dramatic part of the reveal when you flip the page because I'd get worried that you'd immediately look at the mask instead of going panel to panel and then arriving at the bottom of the page. But that would be glacial pacing and you just gotta trust the reader.
>>
>>150999189
Not really related to what you are talking about, but it is interesting how Citizen V probably changes the least from the outfit of Baron Zemo compared to the others. Like obviously there is a cape, but his main color is still purple and he has big contrasting shoulder pads that mirror the fluffy things of the original.
>>
>>150999979
I think they probably use that later right? Like in one of those split down the middle images with the one costume on one side and the other on the other side?
>>
Would any of you guys say Oliffe is underrated? Or would you say he got the right amount of work and popularity he got? I really like his art.
>>
>>150997043
thanks anon.
>>
>>150998314
yeah he's been a fill-in writer for a long time and his stories are good reminders why
>>
>>150997873
They are still incredibly charming afterwards. At least until Avengers/Thunderbolts.
>>
>>150997841
Oh, Speedball...
>>
>>150997047
>>150997058
you'd imagine that MJ learning about this would happen at the end of the issue
but I think it works since the issue is all told from MJ's POV
