Do you feel the Sonic comic characters get treated unfairly?
>>
>>150997304
>Does that include paizuri?
>>
>>150997304
Yes, but unfairly well by the Sonic mobs of Xitter, Tumblr, etc... if the character was made by Flynn, Stanley or another of those creatives they give it an instant pass, even more if the character "belongs" to a minority group.

Yes, but no more than any other sanic character, because the wildly autistic, disparate factions of the fanbase unfairly and overcritically malign everything that doesn't fit their particular headcanon despite Sanic being a ridiculous hodgepodge of disjointed media that rarely, if ever, is conceived with any overall continuity in mind.

I've played most of the games, read most of the comics, and watched most of the TV shows, and all of them catch some amount of weird, deeply personal vitriol from different sets of "fans" for not aligning with their personal vision of what sanic "should be".

It's a franchise about a talking hedgehog who runs fast and fights an evil scientist. Interacting with the sanic fandom is like interacting with the Star Wars fandom: no one hates Star Wars more than Star Wars "fans". Similarly, no one hates Sanic more than Sanic "fans"

They get treated more than fair enough for out of place melodramatic crying lesbians part of a secondary part of the brand that is boring filler based on one of the worst Sonic games with writers from the friend groups of writers whose only claim to fame was the late stages of a strange localization. They actually get treated too good with getting constant merch and attention over a lot of actually neat game characters whose fans have been starving for 2 decades or so.

Your complaints are still retarded. "muh minorities", "muh flynn", "muh stanley", "instant pass", are all dipshit takes. I see people clowning on all that shit in multiple Discord channels, Sonic Stadium threads, and obviously here, all day every day. You chuds literally can't stop crying about it every single thread. It's made filtering most of your horseshit buzzword "criticisms" easy, at least.

I actually like Lanolin, Jewel, Surge, Belle, Kitsunami, and Starline more than the crying lesbian duo. I also don't understand why Silver fans are constantly crying about Lanolin 'bullying' him.
>>
>>150997978
Here is what I think of them, at least who I think are the most prominent members of the IDW original cast:
>I think Tangle was an interesting character at first. Design-wise, I could easily see her as a Sega original (and by that I mean she passes. Most comic originals have a few clear “Original Character Donut Steel” telltale signs to them), but lately it feels like they don't know what to do with her other than pair her with Whisper.
>Whisper, I like her character, but I hate her outfit, particularly the mask and cape. Whenever she’s drawn in alternative clothes, she’s so pretty it’s enraging.
>Lanolin has become sort of a punching bag for certain groups. I don’t really mind her, and sure, I enjoy her big knockers, but all the Sally comparisons that happened for a while (and keep happening) felt a bit too much. At least, for me. I do find funny all the stressed Lanolin art that has been produced.
>Surge and Kit are funny when written a certain way, but I agree there seemed to be a big tug-of-war about what direction the pair was going to take. Let’s hope the better option won.
>And Jewel… she’s cute. I like her, for that.

The only thing I like about Lanolin is her body, she has an awful personality like she's always mad at everyone for some stupid reason and everytime she talks she gets more and more annoying.
She should retire from being a freedom fighter or whatever and start a modeling career.
>>
>>150997304
Yeah, and I think because liking Sonic is the equivalent of being giga-autismo, thanks to all the weird fan-art and then underground culture typing Chris-Chan and Sonic together, making kind of a litmus test to see how autismo are you. Although there's enough gooner shit to kinda counteract that.

>>

OP asked if they’re treated unfairly, and my answer (which might’ve sounded a bit too “/co/-ish”, I’ll give you that) was just that they often get treated too well sometimes, not as harshly as places like /co/ or /sthg/ make it sound.
From what I’ve seen, a lot of Sonicfags on social media shower them with praise either because they line up with certain beliefs or because a particular creator made them, not because they truly think the character is good.

That’s not exactly objective”, and neither is hating them for the same reason.
I just judge them on what matters to me: design, writing, and development, which is what I posted later.

Lanolin's issue for me on those two regards come from
>She can never be a straight man for the real Sonic cast, despite all of them having plenty of idiosyncracies that would exasperate any random fellow were they not the literal superheroes of the 'verse.
>She has no reason to be THIS grumpy. Again, her interactions with the main cast have been pretty limited overall, she already pretty detached from everyone, and no one else but her have been this disenfranchised by the Metal Virus. Compare her early, unvoiced appearances to her modern take, she's not only night-and-day, but just sort of miss the point in her being so exasperated: she's a normal sheep that keeps getting in the most insane situations.

In theory, she should have good interactions, but it feels like they have no clue how to write a straight man. Especially since Whisper's issues never interfere with the group's cohesion, Tangle already has a 'tard wrangler in Whisper, and the less said about her talks with Silver in the leadup to the Phantom Rider arc, the better... She's kind of a bad character, which is a shame because yeah, straight men are cool. No one hates Espio.

I agree there is a stark shift to her bright eyed personality to more downcast brooding personality now. You could argue the metal virus gave her PTSD, and her becoming leader is born from a desire to make sure Eggman never gets that far ever again. Although I feel the fans do treat her unfairly, when you have a shape shifting assassin be able to take advantage of her. A flawed leader is more interesting than one who never fumbles.
>>

>>151001347
>A flawed leader is more interesting than one who never fumbles.
While I agree (the inability to have Sonic fail and reflect on his actions is what makes his rants in the IDW comics so insufferable, not even Superman is this self-righteous), there's two more problems here.
>She never really had a GOOD leader moment. The Eggperial City arc was a disaster for her, and the Phantom Rider just made her look seven degrees of incompetent. There's not much reason FOR her to be the leader anyway, as both Whisper and Tangle have more experience and understanding of team synergies. She's all flaws, no real perks here (besides her sheep milk).
>THIS STUPID BITCH LET MIMIC IN. You knew from the get-go that there is a shapeshifting assassin that wants to murder one of your most trusted companions and you decide that the new guy is more worth your time?? What is wrong with you?!

The pacing of the comics and arc structures really does her no good. She doesn't have the opportunities to really express herself or make her look good. And the artificial separation the IDW OCs have away from the game cast prevents her from having good interactions that would make her No Fun Allowed-attitude work (she feels like she would bond a lot with Rouge). I roll my eyes saying this because it is a pretty shallow critique, but she very much a victim of Good Concept, Poor Execution.

...It doesn't help that Mimic sucks SO MUCH as an antagonist...

The thing is, Amy was originally going to be the leader of the Restoration. But fans complained they didn't want to see what was a sidekick take a leadership role. So the role was given to a newcomer. I'd say her saving grace is her trying to be better, and not having a unbroken winning streak like the Sega cast.

>>151001477
I think that was less the idea that they didn't want a sidekick on a leader role, but moreso that being the leader of the Restoration is A) unfitting for Amy and B) completely sidelines her. It would lock her down as bad as Knuckles to Angle Island, they always have to have an excuse for Amy to venture out, ditch work, or drag the entire organization to even small-scale adventures like the Chao Races. Not that I wouldn't want the main cast to have...a reason to exist in the IDW-verse, they are so unattached to the themes and worldbuilding of the comics. But it was just a bad idea to have Amy in charge. The revolving chair of the Restoration leadership is an odd writing decision when you think about it, but that's a different topic.

Semi-related note: Amy needs to be LESS competent, to be blunt. There's not a lot that Amy CAN'T do as a character. I get she does have some leadership skills, but when was she good at documentation and all the clerical work required for running a whole organization?? She's this weirdly well-rounded character that have no real weaknesses or flaws. She can even move on from Sonic thanks to these modern writers... She doesn't even have Sonic's writing mandates, so why is she never allowed to fail or not be this all-consuming mass of powers and skills and personality traits?

>a weak character named Zero is referred to as being worthless by a character with the ultimate power
>after Zero gains unrivalled power, he changes his name to Infinite
>when Infinite has his power taken away, he is literally nothing without the power
The entire intended point of Infinite's character is that none of his power is real, that he's a total phoney, as proven by Eggman using the ruby better than Infinite ever could.
"Infinite" is a mask and without the ruby that mask is gone, leaving the character with nowhere to go in terms of progression, bringing him back would make him a worthless addition as a reoccurring villain.

Consider the fact that Tangle only exists because Ian Flynn felt the Sonic series, and I quote, "lacked kick-butt females", and that just shows such a deep disrespect for most of the females the games introduced.

In practice, she's just there to fill in for Sonic when the writers can't write him the way they want to, meaning someone to introduce new OCs to. Whisper, Jewel, Belle, Tangle served as their shepherd bringing them into the series, and she just doesn't do much on her own. She's basically purposeless in-narrative.
>>
>>151001270
Lanolin is an Archie-style character stuck in a world built on Sega-style rules, and that just doesn't work.
>>
>>151001986
by "lacks kick-butt females", what Ian REALLY meant was "lacks Sally and Bunnie".
>>
>>151002004
This. Take it with a grain of salt, but I remember reading that Ian tried to convince Sega to recycle the Archie cast for IDW, only for the idea to be immediately shut down.

Ian is an Archie Sonicfag, not a Game one. Whether that is good or bad, I leave to the public.

Comic Sonic is insufferable. Every time he opens his mouth, I hate him even more.
>>
>>151002018
Is that a rumour or a fact?
Does Sega not know they own the characters?
>>
>>151001991
So much of IDW Sonic in general is suffering from that exact dichotomy. It feels like the writers are stubbornly trying to will Archie back into existence instead of playing to the current comic's potential strengths, and these sensibilities just end up being a ball and chain dragging the entire run down.
>>
>>151002294
They know, they just don't care. In reality there's zero reason to bring them over to the main canon; they're ancient leftovers from a decades old cartoon show. They contribute less than nothing to the actual main cast, even in Archie they were extremely redundant, and warped Sonic's characterization way too much just to justify their own existence.
>>
>>151001991
Sega style rules are not flexible for a comic book. With Archie their was a lot more trust to let people do what they wanted.
>>
>>151002409
Considering most fans know who they are, I'd say the comics kept a huge lasting impact that keeps them relevant to this day.

A revolving cast for different games is nothing people are saying no to. Hell, the racing and party games would benefit for a bigger cast since people are making mods of characters who should be free DLC.
>>
I really wish that the IDW writers wrote Lanolin better. Adam Bryce Thomas actually has a great backstory for her but the actual comic doesn't take inspiration from that at all and simple goes "Uh yeah she is now suddenly the leader of the elusive diamond cutters and hates Sonic because... >this is brainlet take

sonic forces is an cluster fuck of an game from the get-go. sega would never raise the stakes of the series to accommodate a "war story" do what they always do, play it safe and sacrifice the potential it to save face.

I genuinely hate how Sonic team completely fucked up what the entire concept the Phantom Ruby should have been, all because they wanted their High Stake Gritty Eggman War plot. A gem that creates illusions that are so real that they hurt you, in its most reductive state, is the ability to literally manifest anything into existence. Fake or not, that ability is genuinely a threat to you, and just saying "it's an illusion" has shown to not dispel it or make it lose its power over you, so the fact it's an illusion is completely pointless.

infinite potential with phantom ruby can make loyal copies of people, full body and memories as seen in Zavok

>he could make copies eggman and gerald with all their intelligence(s) thus having access to the smartest beings on the planet with none of their downsides aka archie eggman(s)
>copy the gizoid and get his eggmen to fully research it unlike E-121 Phi, it will be perfect version of emerl and mass produce him
>mass produce enhanced version "color/wisp" power metal sonic seen in rise of the wisp
>make and upgrade variable wispon (whisper gun) and mass produce it
>THE METAL FUCKING VIRUS
>make shadow copy and get eggman to download it's mind into a shadow android and let him larp asthe "yellow" shadow
>copy Gerald(s) and have him make genetic enhancments, a better starline
>copy maria and torture shadow endlessly with her pain or download her into a female modified shadow android making her maria the hedgehog
>get his eggmen to finish the phantom ruby prototype and do the otherworld comedy event solo.

infinite had so much potential to be the biggest threat to the sonic universe it not even funny.

>>
>>151001550
>they always have to have an excuse for Amy to venture out, ditch work, or drag the entire organization to even small-scale adventures like the Chao Races.
A good writer would have had Amy embezzle the restoration funds so she could be with Sonic all the time ("beach training trips", "important meetings with Sonic at fancy restaurants", "fieldwork at the amusement park", etc.), which would have been funny and amusing, but there are no good writers here.
>>
>>151002636
There was no trust, it was complete ignorance and agnosticism to the comic that let it get as far as it did. Archie got to have crazy melodrama and comic nonsense because no one, SEGA of Japan or America, had any kind of mandates or rules beyond "don't let the main Sonic characters die", and even then Robotnik was exempt from such. It was an Archie comic more than it was a Sonic comic, for good and ill.

>>151003337
>Even if we are screwed already, I think... I hope it was just a loud minority on Social Media.
No, it was a pretty big deal. You gotta remember Flynn was the head of both the Archie Sonic and Mega Man comics around the time the games had Pontac and Graf as writers, who ABSOLUTELY should not have been writing the games. It was fine for Colors, with how overall lighthearted that was, but by Forces, it became a mess of tone and story.

>>151003444

I'm always of two minds of this because both are correct.
On one hand, the games' cast is too big. There's WAY too many characters and as much as we can make fun of Penders' Knuckles run, the idea of individual comic runs for characters is something that should have been done years ago (which we technically have for stuff like Whisper & Tangle and Bad Guys, but they really need more if IDW wasn't poor as fuck). There's too many characters for even Sonic Team to build around and they don't do anything. They still are trying to figure out if Shadow and Rouge works for GUN, if that still even exists or not; what even is Blaze's dimension; is Cream a valid partner or just a kid; can Knuckles leave Angel Island; is Silver even real, so on and so forth. It's easy to make fun of Dragon Ball for sidelining its cast, but you always get the idea that they do things and have lives and want to be people. Taking DB's huge cast but not even its barebones worldbuilding to make sure everyone have things to do is one of SEGA's biggest mistakes with the franchise.

...but on the other hand, the Freedom Fighters ARE a pretty core part of Sonic's history. Redundant and character warping as they are, the people buying IDW comics aren't going to forget them. They specifically hired many of the same people who were writing the Archie comics. They let Surge slip in despite being a blatant homage to Scourge, to the point she can't even exists wholly without those meta ties. The FF ARE SEGA's characters, so to not use them, even AFTER an EXPLICIT TAKEOVER OF THE WORLD BY EGGMAN, is a very questionable decision on SEGA's part. They don't need to be the same people, chuck 'em all in Blaze's dimension if need be. Just that if you have them, and the comic already have an absurd stranglehold on making EVERY Sonic character important (I like the Chaotix but do we need them in every arc?), use what you got.

Yeah, some goofiness in the cast would be nice, and even I roll my eyes at the whole "AMY LOVES THE WHOLE WORLD" bit they are trying to do with her. Team Mom Amy is really boring and not even congruent with her past portrayals. But it is still a kids' comic at the end of the day and you don't need your main heroine fucking over the restoration of the planet, especially after another global terrorist event by Eggman. It's one of those petty, realistic kinds of self-serving behavior that stops being funny fast. One artist on the comic liked the design so much he began to place cameos of her throughout the comic's run as an easter egg. Other artists liked that and joined in causing fan interest to increase. Eventually, the writing staff decided to pitch the design as a new official character to Sega and she was approved.

As for why she is allowed to have big boobs, there aren't any rule that say female Sonic characters can't have big boobs, but they do have to abide by video game ratings boards and TV S&P guidelines or their age rating will increase and mess with sales. Picrel is Rouge's second appearance in the comic and IDW, no matter how woke people accuse it of being, has ever had a problem depicting her with cleavage or an exposed back.

Honestly Sega de-sexifying Rouge pisses me off. I'm not even speaking from a coom furfag perspective, her "sexy" is part of her character, she's hot and she knows it and uses it to her advantage, akin to Catwoman or something, that's her character and appeal. There's no gain in trying to make her overtly part of team Sonic and be part of the gang.
>>
>>151004199
To be fair, ABT is obsessed with giving Sonic female characters humongous tits (just look at pic related).
Not only Rouge, but the rest of the female cast are being toned down by Sega itself, something I believe is the result of listening too much to SoA (ABT giving them huge tits is just the result of him also being a porn artist).

>>151004247
It’s even more infuriating when you consider she also took some inspiration from Fujiko Mine (the go-to reference in Japanese media when it comes to sexy phantom thieves) who also has huuuuge... tracts of land.

Lanolin is supposed to be a civie who's trying to make a positive difference in Sonic's crazy world, but is too grounded as an individual so she gets into situations that are above her pay grade. She also has the flaw of being very bossy. She's supposed to overcome these flaws and learn the real superpower of teamwork, but the comic hasn't done a good job of showcasing that character arc and in fact has backtracked on that lesson in the two storylines she has be the subject of. ABT, the artist who created her, likes to depict her as schizophrenic and dress her up in sexy costume in his fanwork.

But don't worry about all that, the best way to appreciate the character is to ignore the comic, that's what most of her fans do.

Unfair?
How can it be unfair if they never get what they deserve?
The last time the cast saw Surge, she attacked Sonic in front of everyone. A few days later, they treat her like she didn't do anything.
>>
>>151004469
Its both the cultural zeitgeist of artist wanting more grounded designs and rating boards restricting creativity for the financial safety of a broader audience (its like the Comics Code, which was self-inforced by the Big 2, but for video games). Picrel>>151004417 was just to give an answer as to why the games have been toning down Rogue, but you are right that VG ratings boards don't have much influence on comics and as such these measures for Rogue are not present in the comics.

While the transition between Overpowered to Phantom Riders for Surge's character as a whole was goofy, they DO acknowledge that she's a loose cannon and needs to be on a short leash. Whisper growls at her, everyone is awkward around her, and even Sonic wasn't above making a threat should she have ulterior motives. And in the grand scheme of things, no one knows she started the forest fire and her toddler rampage in the city was pretty small beans, even without Eggman skewing the Disaster Thresholds of Villainy there. And as Sonic said, basically all his friends but Tails and Cream tried to kill him at least once. So it really is water under the bridge, especially knowing Surge and Kit are very unstable and just need any sense of grounding.

I do think the antagonists get off WAY TOO CLEANLY repeatedly. Eggman, the Deadly Six, Clutch, the pacifism and nice nature of the cast do not gel with the absolute destructiveness and psychopath the villains have. Even for superhero logic, the way the cast treats Starline and Mimic and even Surge are way too idiosyncratic compared to the nightmares they been fighting for god knows how long. I know they can't KILL off the game characters, and jailing them is pushing them down the line, but it is silly how much rope the cast give their antagonists.
>>
>>151004737
What did Clutch do? Jewel started the self-destruct, lol. Honestly Clutch and Mimic really got the short end of the stick all things considered, they (and Starline) definitely did not get off easy.

It is more to say that Clutch really throws the morality of the cast into question. They treat illegal dumping and hostile corporate takeovers as bad as being an assassin or consuming the planet to create an infinitely-sprawling city. They would rather work with Eggman than Clutch, but then also just...let Eggman have Clutch over wanting to dispense their real sense of justice.

You aren't incorrect in how screwy the IDW-original (male) antagonists are. Again, the morality of everyone is so weird despite the really high stakes they keep using Eggman and co. in. I think back to the "Do we really care Starline got shunted into some random point on Earth?" line and think of how backwards Sonic's logic is. They rather have EGGMAN, the person that MADE the Metal Virus, than the dude only indirectly responsible for it and wanted a proper vaccine and method of control, because.... They write the characters as if the writers have personal beef with them, over acknowledging the universal threat to existence that is Eggman. So the way they decide to write them out feels so unsatisfying and questionable to everyone. It didn't felt like that would be the end of Starline's plans, I don't even think he knew Surge and Kit was beaten. Clutch isn't really gone, but it does say something Sonic is okay with Eggman fucking him over. And Mimic is, again, an awful character, but now he has even awful exit from the comics. They really should have just killed him off in the Whisper & Tangle comic.

The antagonists very much run the story and do the most exciting things in the comics. So it is very frustrating to watch the writers get so caught up in their own headspaces, watch them pump their arms about how "haha I have overcame my personal trauma with killing this furry in my kids' comic! Take that, Patriarchy!". Makes me very worried about the upcoming Villain Kit storyline...

Everytime Sonic and Eggman team up in this comic is extremely facepalm worthy. The worst is when they team up to take down Surge of all people. Surge is not a threat to Sonic, there's no scenario where she could ever be a threat to Sonic, he beat her previously with a broken leg. Evan seriously just made the main character torment a victim with the help of her abuser. How could anyone look at this and think Sonic was supposed to be the good guy.

>>
>>151005411
Eggman hasn't done anything to Surge beyond exist in her mind rent-free thanks to Starline, so can somewhat let it slide. He's not her abuser, if anything she's been quite the nuisance to him and I doubt he would forget the death threat she sent him. I don't think the arc does a good job at conveying it, but Overpowered was meant to put him a little in the wrong, not quite having all the details or capabilities to handle Surge's instability. Sonic agreeing on a team-up is aggravating, but given how unstable and amped up she is, can at least see getting the extra help.
Sonic not having anything to deal with inevitable backstab from Eggman is stupid. If Surge didn't short circuit herself there and got Kit to pull 'em out, what was the plan on that end? Even in terms of always beating him, that's an unnecessary variable to toss in your capture attempt. Eggman isn't Bowser, it is not cool to watch them work together. He will backstab you, LITERALLY in the case of poor Gemerl. The only abuse Eggman is dishing out is to Sonic weird trust in him...

The writers just don't know how to handle the relationship between Sonic and Eggman. They know they have to be immortal forces, unstoppable force vs. immovable object. But they don't understand at how to do the Reed Richards vs. Dr. Doom appeal, or give Eggman a tangible goal that would make him so untouchable on principled grounds.

But as is she feels like the writers keep second guessing themselves on what to do with her (New Sally? Control Freak with anger issues whose own teammates are worried about telling the truth? Normal person slowly going crazy working with eccentric superheroes?) and the result is she feels aimless and inconsistent.

It would go such a long way if we had something from her POV where she sticks firmly with one niche.

>the inability to have Sonic fail and reflect on his actions is what makes his rants in the IDW comics so insufferable, not even Superman is this self-righteous
Because he's not the flawed hero. He's the inspiring one. The guy who the actual flawed heroes look up to and are inspired by to become greater. This is why it's important to pair Sonic with someone in these adventures, so they'd be the one learning the lessons while Sonic stays Sonic.
>>
>>151005657
Sonic's similar to Superman in that he's simple on a surface level, but actually pretty difficult to slot in him any atypical storyline. You can toss Tails or even Knuckles into any adventure with some moral grandiose and they would do pretty fine. But Sonic is such a blur (lol) of character and morality despite needing to be a weird pinnacle and foundation of such. If it is any more complex than "Punch Eggman", his lack of depth or coherency in attitude really stands out. It's why people argue he's very OOC in Sonic '06, in that he is both lacking in usual swagger AND his heroism is so...painfully blatant yet singular directional towards Elise. It's honestly impossible to balance out his punk attitude with this paragon of heroism approach, and SEGA just decided to pick the most obnoxious ways of doing such.

They are trying to make Goku but with nothing that made Goku work. It's like modern writers only read about Goku and how he is in DBZ Abridged and think that's what they should AVOID writing him, but now you are left with this insufferable, self-righteous-yet-amoral asswipe. This is why, as goofy and cringey it is, there's more than a lick of truth to the "Sonic should be like the wind" critique. If he's going to be above-it-all and virtually unflappable to the end of the world, then you should write it like that, not have your "complex moral highground" cake and eat it too.

>>151005726
Ian's position in the comics is just strange nowadays. He's supposedly hands-off and only advisory, but he also talks about all the things he's gonna do and toss in and doesn't really communicate with the writers. This would work if his actions wasn't indirectly responsible for kickstarting the apocalypse. Or even if Sonic's friends were flawed heroes in the comics. Only Tails and Amy would wear the "What Would Sonic Do?" bracelets and even then...
The soliloquys are so bad because they are so caught up in saying Sonic's worldview is bad and destructive and too passive to fix anything while also treating him as the Inspiring One. Again, can't have your cake and eat it too. Shadow and Espio are completely correct in saying the Metal Virus would not have happened if they did not left Mr. Tinker to his own devices or fixed Metal Sonic. The Deadly Six upon getting blasted back to their homeland IMMEDIATELY started plotting revenge. And nothing Sonic said to Surge made her reconsider her actions, only the raw feeling that Good Feels Good and she wants validation. Sonic is painfully incompetent as a paragon figure and the comics don't seem to know this.

What is inspiring about working with Eggman at least FOUR SEPARATE OCASSIONS with no way to counter him screwing things up? Are we sure he's not an Egg Pawn in disguise since Forces?? Made to spread Egg Propaganda that he's actually not so bad and completely reasonable and wouldn't shoot you in the head?

>>151005815
If the Restoration was just A Thing with infinite resources like GUN is, sure. Corruption ahoy, it would be a funny gag. But given how important it is to maintaining the peace on the islands and making sure what Eggman does isn't permanent, enough we are supposed to care it got blown to smithereens, I don't think that gag would be very palatable. Especially if they were planning the whole Clean Sweep deal, too. "My corruption is good because it was for Sonic! Your corruption is bad because money!"
It's definitely autistic but the comics and Sonic as a whole are supposed to have a certain amount of grounding to it, as much as flying loop-da-loops can grant.

The thing that pisses me off about how they handled finishing off Mimic was how it quite literally rendered the previous conflict they set up totally pointless. They tried and paint Whisper and Solver going after him as a bad thing that they tried to hide from Tangle, only to follow it up with Tangle being totally fine with the murder revenge quest? She doesn't even call Whisper out for actually trying to end Mimic, it just gets ignored. What was even the point then?!

It's just baffling how bad Ian's writing has degraded. He was the one that set up this subplot, and it STILL went completely nowhere.

This happens a LOT in IDW. Big thing are set up, and either fail to deliver in any satisfying way or are just forgotten about.

Remember when Whisper left the Restoration and after the camping arc Tangle went off to find her, then the next time they both appear things are treated as if they never left?

I acknowledge this happened because they felt the idea they had for how Tangle would bring Whisper back "felt toxic", but if anything that just makes it worse.

The issue with Lanolin is that she's based on a retarded notion of "realism" which does not apply to Sonic the Hedgehog. Why the fuck should anyone care about TPS reports or OSHA violations when there's a mad scientist who flattens cities for fun every weekend? Moreover, who in the audience actually wants to read about that?
[YouTube] Futurama - Tedious Paperwork (embed)
Lanolin stands for the opposite of everything Sonic is meant to embody. Sonic is all about freedom. He runs around the world looking for new experiences and adventures. He doesn't like to stay tied down to any one particular thing. Sonic is not even meant to be seen as a hero. He just does heroic things for fun, but is just as likely to fuck things up if he thinks it'll be fun. Lanolin on the other hand is an absolute control freak perpetually seething at everyone for violating a series of byzantine and arbitrary rules.

In other words, she's Sally.
>>
>>150997304
If anything, it's the opposite. They're treated too charitably. Like Surge is the most basic "good guy in denial" character but people will swear up and down that she's nothing but "potential" and "the best thing Sonic's done as of late."
>>
>>151011131
Yes, Lanolin inherited Sally's role. The may be different personality-wise, but they had the same job as far as writing went, the "logical answer" that exists to be tossed out in favor of Sonic's heroics.
>>
>>151010062
>say what you want about Surge but she's real popular

Because of crackshipping her with Sonic.

>and most people would say she's had some solid stories.

Those people couldn't tell a gourmet burger from a Big Mac

>If anything Surge is one of IDW's best accomplishments.

For all the wrong reasons, see part one.
>>
>>151012186
>the "logical answer" that exists to be tossed out in favor of Sonic's heroics
Who the hell thinks that there should be a "logical answer" in a Sonic story anyway?

Wait... wait, is that stupid fucking thing Whisper carries around supposed to be a gun? Why the fuck does it look like a space umbrella made out of sex toys?
>>
>>151012357
It holds the different whips in the ball.
>>
>>151012357
It's something of a carryover from Forces, its a Wispon weapon. Her's is a prototype variable wispon that can harness all wisps at once, including a literal space umbrella.

>>151012208
>Because of crackshipping her with Sonic.
That's pretty much a success for a comic-original character. Surge has meaning to other characters, fun lines, and a reasonable arc (not GOOD, just you can see where it can go and how it functions). Compare to Lanolin, Belle, Mimic, or even Whisper, Surge feels like a real character with focus and ideas.
Sonic characters aren't complex and deep, you don't need to try THAT hard. It what makes the above quartet so frustrating, in that they repeatedly fall face first under that bar of quality...
>>
>>151002922
>I just want a story about a blue hedgehog that way too cool for school, that goes on adventures, and occasionally fight and match wits with an egg shaped human.
That a bad idea since no one here want to read a sonic comic book where he only fights eggman they want to see him fight other villains.
>>
I wish the oc's would be cool animals instead of more boring ass mammals. Why Mimic so far has been the only interesting design of the new characters even if he is dead and also wasn't utilised better.

Unless it’s part of something they’re doing with him in the near future. We’re getting a movie with Metal Sonic as the antagonist and Iizuka said he is interested in doing more events like ‘Year of Shadow’ using the movies as a guideline.
>>
>>151004952
Truth to be told, anon, given the current state of the comic, I have no idea. I only have a fool's hope with me.
>>
>>151012469
>Surge feels like a real character with focus and ideas

No, not really. It SEEMS like she does, but in the comic proper, she really doesn't.
>>
>>151001293
>it's JUST Tangle slapping Lanolin's boobs causing all the sloshing
L O L
>>
I want the writers to forget about the Resistance and portray Eggman as a real man. Yes, he's evil and proud of it, but he's still human. Why do I have to assume he woke up one day and decided to be evil? Why can't his descent to villainy a series of unfortunate events that the average anon would sympathize with, like being persecuted by GUN just because he's Gerald's grandson. He tries to deny it when found out, but then gives up and admits that yes, the world fucked with him, so why not fuck it back?
>>
>>151001759
>>151002985
>literally his entire character is being whiny and a total crybaby about "power" and such
>all of his powers come from a gimmick gem that was effectively just a throwaway thing for two games (kind of a game and a half since Mania was supposed to be a "cheap ad for Forces" in a way)
>acts like a kid's idea of what Shadow is supposed to be, but he's written completely unironically for some reason
>sounds like it too
>his entire motivation for wanting to kill literally everyone, every living being on the planet, is because Shadow called him "weak" once
>all this crammed into an unfinished, mediocre game with some of the worst writing in any game in the franchise

He always came across to me like one of those kids who gets lightly bullied, nothing serious, but then ends up coming to school with his dad's gun
I still don't get why or how he gets actual fans who think he's legit cool.
Hell, even the "rubies with infinite power" shit just sounds like something some kid on a playground would come up with, and the more I learn about what they planned with him, the more I feel like he's some kind of Scourge-tier gag character not meant to be taken seriously.
>>
>>150998221
Funny, how I liked her personality the most. I can really empathize with her being a full time tard wrangler who has to bear all the responsibility and has to make sure shit works out, while everyone else is just goofing off.
>>
>>151003826
It would be simpler to say that Sonic as a franchise has such a fucking huge baggage of characters and plots and concepts and shit to carry that it actively hampers delivering a good story. Made even worse by how they have no idea what do they really even want. Its like dumping everything you find in a kitchen into a pot and realizing that you just made slop,
>>
>>151003826
>Freedom Fighters ARE a pretty core part of Sonic's history
No one but two autistic American comic fans care about those irrelevant OCs, the rest of the world only knows Sonic from the games
>>
>>151008250
Whisper could have ended up being incredibly fucking badass and cool in the first page, if she just said "No." and pulled the trigger. Just the right amount of edgy and closure.
>>
>>151014146
Every Sonic fan knows who the FF are.
>>
>>151014224
Not that Anon, but if you asked everyone that's ever played a Sonic game who the Freedom Fighters are, I guarantee that the majority wouldn't know what you're talking about.
The last time they were widely known by the Sonic fanbase at large was back when AoSTH was still on the air.
>>
>>151014146
Don't be stupid, the Archie comics were going for 20 odd years, Satam is a still discussed cartoon and the internet makes any info on them easy to access
>>
Having read all of Archie last year, I completely fail to understand the Sally and Lanolin comparisons, I feel like people think Sally was in slap mode 24/7 instead of that being a result of the Bollers/Penders shitfest of the time.
>>
>>151014085
It's cause he has a cool enough design with the assymetrical mask, was the first mobian villain in ages for the games and has enough scenes that show how he could work effectively as a villain in powerset and personality to compensate for how much the story utterly wastes him. Infinite's debut is about as messy as Silver's with the key difference being one character didn't get shelved afterwards.
>>
>>151014305
It's just cause of the most superficial comparisons of them as leader figures who have a contrast with Sonic in methods or personality. As you said Sally is much less of a abrasive bitch desire some of her rough writing patches....also I'll be honest I think Lanolin hasn't got that great a design that's only carried cause people obsess over her boobs when she has both a boring outfit and being a sheep is visually uninteresting.
>>
>>151014062
Eggman doesn't see himself as evil; he's a narcissistic manchild that prioritizes his own desires over literally everything else, including common sense. He bulldozes the natural world so he can build theme parks he'd enjoy, not because he gets off to the suffering he causes or whatever. A huge part of SA2 is that he couldn't give less of a fuck about his own lineage, only what he could get out of it to complete his goals.

Trying to inject pathos into Eggman is missing the point entirely. It's how we get the worst of Flynn's writing with the character.
>>
>>151014149
No, that's just edgy. And incredibly stupid.

I think they get too much favor. Jewel is the only one that has a real role to play and it's a background one. Starline was okay but he's dead. Surge and Kit were good as antagonists but now they just feel like pointless orbiters, just like Lanolin, Tangle and Whisper. They all just feel like obstacles to make the storytelling more padded.

Most people don't distinguish it, and many just do it to show off that they ate something expensive. The only one who could tell the difference would be the chef who cooked the burger or someone with a similar culinary education.
