i like how japanese wikipedia has american cartoons under the "anime" category
Anime is literally just shorthand for animation, all animation seem as anime in Japan. The divide between Anime and Cartoons is entirely artificial and self imposed by the West, which makes no sense when you remember that anime as a style stemmed from old western animation styles, and the only reason modern Western work looks so different now is because of a whole experimental/radical shift in animation in the 90's.

I think the joke would still land, but it'd be from the perspective of it being a genre shift from cute adult comedy anime to shonen action show anime. Your average Japanese person still differentiates between Japanese and Western animation though. Just like how in America you'd call Le Samouraï a foreign film, they call Western cartoons foreign anime (海外アニメ)
